I am trying to Phone a friend who is in Poland (I am in UK). I am on T-Mobile PAYG, and have no problem phoning any other phones abroad. However when I try and phone Poland it rings and then the connection is lost. Could it be the person doesn't want to pick up and disconects or a problem with my network? I can text and recieve replys but the problems occur when phoning. Any help or information would be great thanks.

P.s This is my first post!

It wont be a problem with Tmobile network .... if any doubt speak to one of their call centre advisors

1. as you are aware you are charged as well as the person receiving the call if making an international call regardless of location in the world ....

2. PAYG credit gets eaten pretty quickly in this way of both parties

3. maybe the person just simply doesnt want to talk to you

4. if it rings it wont be a problem on any network the other person will have ended the call

5. see number 3 again

6. there is no 6 all the above

My mum has recently changed to Virgin for her home phone and she is having the same disconnection problem with me, but not with my Dad (who travels all over the place). Not sure if this is a problem between suppliers there and here or just that Virgin is rubbish.

Also strange is that when she phones me from my house in Glasgow, my phone shows up a Polish number?<-any ideas on that front?

Try using your computer to call your friend. It might be cheaper.

However when I try and phone Poland it rings and then the connection is lost.

Had the same problem a while ago and called their call centre. Their explanation was that the problem was with the network in Poland.
Then there are other dirty tricks done by some networks when u're calling to another EU country.
They are supposed to charge a certain amount which was imposed by the EU Commission( Mrs Viviane Reding) for roaming within the 27 member nations: 0,29 Euro pm calling,

0,08 Euro receiving and 0,09 Euro for texts as of July 2012 and further reductions to be done yearly.
This actually turns out to be much cheaper than making a local call or sending a local text for example: T-Mobile pay as you go charges 0,62zł to send a text to the UK but if you're roaming in the UK and send a text to Poland you only pay 0,52zł.

The Networks will explore all the loop holes to recover what they feel is a loss in the EU roaming charges.

Also strange is that when she phones me from my house in Glasgow, my phone shows up a Polish number

This is how they afford to offer you cheap international calls. What they do is direct the call to their Polish land line number and the call comes to you from that number

hence the person calling is charged equivalent to a local call in Poland. One of the tricks brought about by cheap international call providers but still quite controversial

and some Mobile Network providers will block such if it comes up in their networks.

Use Lyca mobile - get a free SIM from them or for £1 in Poundland or 99p in 99p Stores.

Calling Poland is then 1p or 2p for landlines (per minute) - full details here lycamobile.co.uk/en/internationalrates

(Moderators may want to merge this with the main thread on the subject)

I just google cheap european calls and use one of those numbers from a landline, its usually 1p / minute to a landline and then 4p / to a mobile, after a while they sneak the prices up and thats when you switch again.

Here s typical one: dialtosave.co.uk

Look up Discount Dial. There is a connection charge, then 1/2p per minute.

If you both have internet access, Skype is totally free, and you can talk for hours and hours. Sound quality is excellent, and you can do video, too. I keep in touch with my family in the States and my friends all over the world with it.
