How to get a British phone chipped in Poland.

Hey folk.

I'm planning on sending someone a present to Poland, it's a new Alcatel phone which has a Tesco pay as you go simcard. I was wandering how I would go about getting it chipped in Poland so that it would accept a Polish pay as you go sim, or even contract sim?

Any help would be great :)

Any of those small private phone shops (there must be a dozen in Dworzec Centralny) will take off the simlock for about 15zl.

I thought that too, but wasn't sure whether or not to trust them as I know a few friends went their to fix their phones and got ripped off. But I guess the present is for a Polish lass so she can get it done ;)

Moreover I wondered if it would be difficult for them to do it with a British phone.

I had one done there - no problems, but it was a Polish phone. Should be OK, the phones are the same inside.

If you're lucky you might find it works without bothering.

Just for kicks, last summer I put a "Tak Tak" card in my British O2 phone and it worked fine. Give it a try. :)

In the same way that when roaming you can select whichever network you like (or auto strongest signal) a UK phone might accept all Polish networks for PAY&GO.
