Are Polish people importing a new wave of ancient racism into the UK?

Bollox.....what *the jews* get called in Poland has been unknown in England since the days of King John....plenty of idiots in America hold those weird views,but,there is a large german/Polish population in America afterall......

In England,in the old days ,ie, a bit before I was born but less than a 100 years ago..the only stereotype of jews was a bit tight/mean/canny with money,exactly the same stereotype(minus alchoholism) dumped on us Scots......slightly different to my first time in Poland where i discovered that you lot still have little hand signle secret signs for jews....that,twirly thing with your hand by your ears signifying the funny dangly hair of Orthodox Jewish men was an eye opener....

Not saying there have never been stereotypes here,that would be an absurd lie, but, it has not been backed up with violance since the middle ages,same cannot be said for Poland can it?

So,way back in the 80s when as school kids if someone owed money or wouldnt by you a 10p mix of sweeties you'd say " You dued me", yes, thats the right spelling, we had no idea that the expression had origionaly been "you Jew'd me"......

I also don't say that there is no antisemitism in Poland but if you dare to say that there is some more violence in Poland against Jewish people today than in other countries please provide a source for that.

Tell me also what was the population of Jews in Britain before II World War, I'm very curious.

In my previous comments I was merely refering to those wooden folk sculptures. As for the English speaking countries I saw once in the Internet a mug which ear was form into a nasty caricarure of a Jewish face. It was some XIX or early XX century mug, I don't remember if it was English or American, that's why I've written "English speaking countries".


Oh, I missed that sentece. "A bit"? Don't ridicule yourself! That was the common stereotype in pre-war Europe, including Poland, and that is the hallmark of antisemitism of that era. You've just proved that Great Britain was as antisemitic as other countries.


You' must kidding! Scots are considered to be overly tight and enterprising in a positive way. It's also a world-wide stereotype but the kind of which people made and make friendly jokes. If you dare to compare it with unfair stereotypes that Jewish people fell victims of, then it means you have no sense of any objectiveness and you belittle their torments.

I don't want to drag this subject on, but in Poland there is also such stereotype of Scots. Of course it's all with a pinch of salt, a cause for friendly jokes. For that reason I guess I know what this stereotype is about. I would compare it with the stereotype of Poznanians which are also considered to be overly tight and enterprising.

In a book of English language there was an article about a prostest of Scots who were annoyed with portraing them as stingy people. As an illustration for this article was used a Swedish ad for railways showing 2 Scots sitting in a train and the third hiding in luggage shelf ;)

I don't agree with this statement. Maybe word stinginess alone (I guess it translates into skąpstwo, sknerstwo) has some negative shade, but in general is not a very offensive word. No one will stop to like you because of stinginess, it's considered more of a little faible. Also stinginess might be associated with positive features such as frugality and thriftiness - and that's what I associate with Scots.

In case of Jews I think what isthatu2 meant was an euphemism for "greed", especially considering the fact he put the word "tight" in companionship of "canny" and "mean".

Pretty fekking huge considering the tens of thousands who had flooded out of Poland over the previous 30 odd years.......somewhere between 350.ooo and 400.ooo ,no one really knows for sure though as religion was a private affair and unlike in oh so civilised mainland Europe people who did not consider themselves to be jewish were not in the figures.

I have never heard a single one of those and I am from North London.
The only thing I EVER heard was 'don't be jewish' referring to being tight fisted, similar to Scots.

It is something that I have experienced as a British born black/Caribbean woman. It is something that my 71 year old pensioner mother has experienced. In fact I am not aware of a single black person in my immediate circle who has not encountered virulent racism from Polish people who have moved to the UK. It feels as if the UK has regressed to the 70's & I'm amazed how many Polish people consider racism to be acceptable/legal/normal.

The other problematic factor is that there is so much pathological denial from Polish people that this happens and when people like myself mention it, Polish people act as if people of colour are imagining it or as if it simply does not occur or deflect the argument and say that they experience racism from ethnic minorities. I am going to be very honest and say that I know many black and brown people who dislike Polish people BUT it is NOT because they are white (as these same black people get on very well with British and other white people); it is not because of the refrain that you have "taken jobs" (these black people are meaningfully employed). It is solely because of the racism. It ends up causing hostility and resentment which I now feel towards Polish people myself because of the number of times I have been walking down the road minding my own business only to be called a N****. I also get fed up hearing that it is "only a few Polish people" that do this when various media reports, news articles, indicate otherwise.. In fact there was a BBC radio show this morning about Polish racism within the UK targeting non white people..
