A Costa spokesman said managers were shocked at the response to the advertisements for three full-time and five part-time posts at the café, to open in Mapperley, Nottingham, on Friday. The jobs pay between £6.10 and £10 an hour. The unsuccessful applicants included senior retail managers with more than 15 years' experience

Things are much worse back in some parts of Britain than I imagined. Sounds like the mid-1980s again.

This is the reality over in much of the world today Those headlines about Spanish and Greek unemployment are just the leading edge. Un- and under- employment are spreading and becoming the norm. Things are going to get worse before they get better.

The difference in the UK is that a few years ago, middle class stay at home mothers would never dream of working in such a place with such people.

Now they don't have a choice.

Probably the Polish guy was the one offering the job........

What's this got to do with Poland?

I think the upto £10 / hour has made all the difference with this vacancy.

Its no wonder so many people are applying with the amount of businesses going bust lately, the internet age is taking out complete chains of highstreet shops, technological unemployment at its finest.

I have driven past a couple of old pubs (public houses) recently that have closed as a result of austerity measures.

As Amer already commented it will get a lot worse before it gets better, if it gets better. I cant see anyway back personally - under the current system.

Good question -- it's because Poles read the forum to get acquainted with English and England and this thread may help give them a fuller picture of the situation in the UK.

Not that I was previously aware you were the forum police, but each to their own.

But even if that wasn't the case its an extremely relevant thread for virtually any forum associated to life.

Well, I agree. But my main reason for posting it was so Poles might learn that it may be getting very difficult to find work in some parts of Britain.

I told several Polish people today about this, whilst still mentioning there may be work in London or the SE, and they were full of disbelief that this story could possibly be true. I fear it may be true, because I remember 100s of us applying for shop jobs in the 80s and similar stories then.
