Polish migrants fight to sleep in toilets overnight in London

A rather hilarious story from the Evening Standard in London. It concerns Polish migrants in London, who were brawling amongst themselves to get the right to sleep in a toilet overnight for 20p.

Does anyone know how this problem was solved, or if it was solved at all? Are they still sleeping there? What about in other cities? And what are good honest British citizens supposed to do when they need the toilet and it's occupied by some hairy Polish builder?

Obviously the Polish proclivity for spending time in toilets as cleaners in the UK meant that the idea of sleeping in toilets was a natural progression for them.

Twenty pence to take a leak in central London?! In Warsaw you're looking at at least two zloty (unless you buy a coffee somewhere).

I find it to be rather offensive that they were abusing the good will of their host country by sleeping there. Public conveniences are hard enough to find in the UK, and for them to use them as cheap overnight accommodation is just beyond the pale.

Did you read the article? These weren't homeless guys, these were people actively using the public conveniences as a home because it was cheaper than rent. They had tools and were clearly workmen, so if anything, you could say that they were taking away warm sleeping accommodation from those that truly needed it.

are you seriously calling a public toilet a home? did they get deliveries on the address perhaps delphi? i understand you are imaginative but for Christ sake be realistic sometimes too

They certainly were. I wouldn't be surprised if they had some candles hidden there, and perhaps some air fresheners and even some fairy lights.


Probably they got the deliveries to work like most of us do.


Well, think about it. You can work all day on the building site, drink vodka with your mates in the evening and then settle down for the night. Costs you 1.40 a week for rent, as opposed to a minimum of 150-200 quid a week for a shoebox in London. Quite understandable why they choose to settle down in Le Chateau du Toilette as opposed to Crapston Villas!

A rather an old cutlet but I'm curious who put so much effort to spread this sheet (newspaper not story) all over the city? Day by day wasting piles of paper on crossroads, printed in the night. And why people read newspaper here so eagerly. Are they tamed that well?

What is like when a good honest British citizen is born? First goes a hivis vest, then cup of stinky Costa, then a newspaper and finally a good honest British citizen ;)
