How to make my Polish friend's dad like me

helpmeeeee
19 Nov 2013 /  #1
My best friend in the entire world is Polish and I've only really met her dad once, he didn't speak to me much, he just shook my hand with a smile and said hi. I don't think he speaks English very well, but still I would like him to accept me. What should I do? Should I speak to him more when I am over at her house, or maybe learn a Polish phrase to say to him? Please help.

work hard, study hard, wear conservative clothes, preferably with a cross pendant around your neck, don't put too much value on "having fun", etc etc.. ;)

beer then vodka then beer then vodka.

Turn up one evening with an ice cold half litre of vodka. Drink it 60/40 him/you. Pull a second bottle out of your bag and make sure he drinks at least 75% of it

The next morning turn up at about elevenish with a beer or five.

With some nice items from the Polski Sklep for his second (well, probably his first) breakfast. Can't lose.

I'd add flowers for his Mrs to the list of things to bring the next morning.

Hmm? I am surprised at the question.
What kind of friend do you think parents would like for their child's best friend? Good student, hard working, somebody that would be good influence.

The cross pendant was a wild guess that catholic would probably score high.

BTW, All the booze advice might seriously backfire.

This is exactly what I did the first night I met my missus' family, however, it all went a little pear shaped and I projectile vomited over the bathroom wall (thank God for tiles) before passing out. It was left to my brother in law to check on my breathing during the night.

I think the family all seemed so pleased to see me in the morning was because I was alive.... Perhaps my Father in law and brother in law were in fact expressing extreme relief as opposed to happiness.

Since then i have been to over 6 Polish weddings including my own (the only wedding where I was still upright after midnight) and out of all those crazy wedding there has only been 1 fatality. Not bad eh!

but still I would like him to accept me.

it isn't about accepting you, it is about accepting the fact you are banging his precious little daughter. He will only get over that if he thinks you are a man.

Solution: Buy him a decent bottle of vodka or whiskey, either really..... and get absolutely ********* with him, man to man and all that.
If you are still alive in the morning and haven't gone blind, you are in there.

I'm just asking that because you made it seem like Polish students are supposed to be hard-working. Based on the Polish immigrants I've met, that is not the case.

If you have your own suggestion for the OP, by all means, put it up. Picking on others' answers, or baiting for a fight is not cool.

Exactly. You're English(I guess), it's for you to accept him if you are in your homeland. What on earth are you thinking by diminishing yourself in a such a way. You certainly don't need to learn Polish; quite the opposite.

Quite. The poor woman will have to suffer her husband being loaded yet again, after all.

I'm just asking that because you made it seem like Polish students are supposed to be hard-working. Based on the Polish immigrants I've met, that is not the case.

Trolling again, EM_Wave?

You haven't met any Polish students, so why are you saying such rubbish?

You certainly don't need to learn Polish; quite the opposite.

It's not a bad idea. Polish is a decent gateway language to other Slavic languages, and it's simpler than the others because of the vast amount of borrowings from German in the language. Not to mention that being able to speak Polish at even an intermediate level can help massively in the UK when it comes to supervision/management.

I'm just asking that because you made it seem like Polish students are supposed to be hard-working.

Most of the ones that I've met are very hard-working and committed to their studies.

Based on the Polish immigrants I've met, that is not the case.

Maybe it's just the lazy ones who go to the Sates? Or maybe they're just copying their peers and one too many BigMacs and American TV has made more lazy? ;)
