Polish immigration in UK

You need to realize that there's a difference between an immigrant and an asylum seeker. If you're really worried about all these refugees coming in and taking over the UK you need not to worry anymore because only a small percentage of seekers get chosen for refugee status. The UK and other parts of Western Europe are hardly a soft touch as they ship people off to their country of origin (where they will likely be killed) in less than 'humane' ways. I'm studying Political Science at university and I wish I could link you to the full source (the journal article I'm talking about), but you'd need a subscription. Here's a link to the abstract and you can choose to buy the whole thing if you want to.

Just because some sensational newpaper is claiming that refugees and asylum seekers are taking over the world, doesn't mean its actually true. In fact, the way that most of them (asylum seekers) are treated by UK and Western Europe is nothing short of horrific.

in your opinion no doubt. Having working in asylum centres in the UK I would have to disagree. There are two sides to everything, but personally I think that the UK is one of the more lenient countries when it comes to asylum seekers, too much so for our own good.

Wrong... in a large proportion of the failed applications, these people just have their benefits withdrawn and are forgotten about, they then go "underground" work illegally and are not returned to their own countries...the system is flawed completely.

I see that you live in Toronto, what business is it of yours what happens in "Europe"

In fact, the way that most of them (asylum seekers) are treated by UK and Western Europe is nothing short of horrific.

They receive councelling which costs, they receive free medical, housing and benefits....and in Scotland they are entiled to free university places.....blimey thats horrific!

(where they will likely be killed)

If the above were true then why do they try so hard to get to an Island, they have travelled across so many other EU countries, surely in that state of mind you would just want to be in a "safe" country...it is in the most part for economic reasons they travel here...because we are a soft touch!.

because we are a soft touch!

Because certain people make rules only to benefit themselves, and betray their own children and youths in exchange for all those desperate people who will say yes to low salary and long hours. Overall, it's all about cheap labour. They think it'll benefit them, while reality is that their own children will also get pushed off the markets in the not-so-distant future..

In the meanwhile, more and more young men and women get jobless, isolated, frustrated and labelled as ''the problem.'' Ofcourse, it's all their fault, because all those poor older people who made all those rules are having such a hard time making even more money than they already have..

But ofcourse, if we all decide to keep silent about such issues, and scream a little ''be more competitive!'' here and there the problem will solve itself right?

I don't think so.. I guess we'll see.

And do you still believe in the tooth fairy?

Asylum claims to the UK have dropped significantly

[quote=Mali]

They just dont bother with A.S. they just come into the country and work and live illegally...or better still get into organised crime...

You keep quoting book references and one off instances if that makes you feel better...the UK has always (in the past) been welcoming to people who have fled their countries because of civil war or whatever reason, we have lots of Vietnamese and Bosnians who actually did flee their countries because their lives were in danger...not some African or Lithuanian that fancies a better standard of living..people abuse the system and they are over time ruining it for those who are legitimate...You have to remember how small this Island is and its pockets are not never ending...

Not just my opinion, but also the opinions of scholars who study this type of thing. There are numerous reports that easily justify my claims.

Like I stated above, I'm not singling out the UK as this horrid place that treats foreigners like dirt because that's not what I mean at all. I'm not even saying that the UK is the worst EU country in its dealings with asylum seekers. All I'm saying is that calling the UK a 'soft touch' isn't an honest depiction of the treatment of asylum seekers.

Im not even going to bother getting in to this with you because you are very young and probably have a lovely outlook on life, but the simple truth of the matter is that 1 in 1000 are probably fleeing their country, the rest are simply after a better standard of living but are not prepared or are unable to go about it the proper way and whilst that's a shame, its a problem that their own countries should be addressing....Europe is not their to clean up the mess and take in the poor from other countries, believe it or not we have our own.

I'm 23 (almost) and becoming very pessimistic about the world. All this paper writing is making me a little depressed about the way that the poor in the world are treated (not just by the EU but by their own governments). Its always great reading about how the US sponsored an army in Haiti to get rid of a more Social government but then when all the violence in the US broke out, they suddenly want nothing to do with Haiti. Its an ugly world out there, so yeah the UK and EU should be taking care of their own at the very least.

University is making me anti-everything

not just by the EU but by their own governments

thats the main problem, they have a civil war and the EU get the fall-out, governments would rather spend money on arms and corruption than feeding their own people...

so yeah the UK and EU should be taking care of their own at the very least

It should, but old people still die of malnutrician or cold because they cant afford both....inflation is crazy in the UK yet old people have to live on a pittence.....yet some A.S can come here and live quite comfortable on benefits....thats where my problem lies..

you're saying that the asylum seeker gets the 'package' , a 3 bedroom apartment in a new council housing estate, a flash european car and higher allowance per fortnight than a British old age pensioner ? who probably owns heir own house, has other assets, has a few cars etc etc

There is so much povo people and poverty stricken countries around the world, the amount of people let in to EU countries is reallly..... hardly anything when you compare it to the billions(literrally) of starving , dirt-poor people in the 3rd world.

I do not think the governments of EU countries would suddenly want to sponsor those poor people that they usually make money off of their countries by dirty money from things such as mining in africa , and the oil all around the globe etc etc

yeah probably, thats rubbish, today they usually can't afford to keep the heating on on the winter and afford their council tax so they end up in prison!!!!!! The pension in the UK is terrible if it even exists anymore. I think you can say that asylum seekers get more than the pensioners of the UK but thats not saying much. Alhtough i did hear about the new 50inch tv's in the asylum hostels, what a joke!!!!

poor is poor, there are poor people in the UK, what i think you miss is that there is different levels of being 'poor'. Of course the 3rd world is going to be different from developed or developing nations, thats why they are called 3rd world :):)

I do not think the governments of EU countries would suddenly want to sponsor those poor people that they usually make money off of their countries by dirty money from things such as mining in africa , and the oil all around the globe etc etc

thank god for that, most of the money given to Africa filters its way into of shore bank accounts and into the pockets of the leaders of the nations. Its amazing all the billions that has been pumped into africa over the years and yet, where is the progress???? hasn't the world realised that the money is not hitting the mark, aiding those who need it but instead being distributed amongst the rich dictators of africa.

p.s. nothing like a good old debate. Thank goodness this sort of thing has come back to the top of the pile, i was beginning to wonder what had happend to PF's debating crew

Hah, people like you make me smile. It's because of humanoids like you that I am glad England is getting overflooded by foreigners who end up raping your women, mobbing your men and generally destroying the country you love so much.

Take it like a man, comrade!

last time i checked it was the Nigerians and Afghanis living in luxurious houses and getting all the benefits, the Poles at least work. i'm all against benefits and council housing for people who don't deserve it but don't blame the people who take advantage of it, blame your dumbass government. too many lazy asses native Brits too, because it pays better to stay at home and collect the dole. the tories are not gonna change anything, last time i checked the were giving the thumbs up for turkey joining the EU. guess what's the first place they're gonna come once the gates of Europe are all opened.

Nope...when the Brits want Turkey in so much they should come up with all the costs and open up for their immigrants!
We Germans want nothing to do with that..so!

No we don't want the Turks, or any other F...er coming here and overloading the systems which are already in trouble. We need them as much as Germany needed Mussolini and the Turks as allies, I'm sure they were more of a hindrance then a help. And now this nutcase Cameron is pushing for a Muslim country from Asia Minor to join the EU. Britain's politicians have done more damage to Britain since the war, then Hitler did. The Turks will be a short time fix, and a long time headache. And I'm sure it's something he and Obama have stitched up together, when he was in the US.

By the time Turkey joins-which will be in about 10 years time at least central and eastern Europe will be more prosperous, so will Turkey, so i suspect that though Germany will still be a prime location countries like Poland, Czech Rep and Slovakia will also be quite attractive locations.

I think the immigration impact will not be as bad as you might initially think, besides turkey will have to meet a number of conditions before joining.

well stated.

but don't blame the people who take advantage of it, blame your dumbass government.

*sarcasm*
yeah that's dumb, blaming people for knowingly making dishonest choices and getting others to foot their bill. blame only the government. it must only be one or the other.

*end sarcasm*

Endless talk about money. You do wonder how a character can develop when money is the principal motivator. The last part about the gay is interesting too. It shows how much more tolerant the UK is.

In the 70's many Brits went to Germany to work,as I did. Those Brits that worked in Germany may be the same people ******** about the Polish now.Look around the world and do some research of how many Brits work in other countries for whatever reason.I wonder if there are forums ******** about them taking jobs. Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose!.

Some comments regarding foreigners remind me of another time.It seems we haven't learnt much or we have forgotten, or we don't care ...

Hey, considering the amount of iraqis, Afghans etc that seem to make it across Europe to French coast in the hope of claiming asylum in UK (when pol asylum is supposed to be the first safe country you come to) we all know the definition of an EU passport is "Hello, Mr European border guard, I want to go to England!"
