Every Pole I've met under the age of 40, who was actually born in Poland, seems obsessed with ketchup. Like many myths, there's a lot of truth in this one ;)

Personally I prefer HP Sauce, but certainly not with everything. Mostly on my bacon barm!

Well I do have friends who are a bit crazy on the side of adding ketchup to everything but I'd say it's more like 1 in 5... I haven't heard any "THEY TOOK OUR JOBS... AND KETCHUP!!!" yet ; )

I hate cheddar cheese, i can send u some if u want :P

I take a cheddar block over anything anytime ; ) How can one hate cheddar cheese.. I mean it is kind of fat and unhealthy but hell are we not living for these creatures comforts from time to time..

I wonder if it is possible to get a packaged fish and chip british style in any polish supermarkets, I remember there was this event of "british days" in Lidl supermarkets network but it was only for a week, half of the food was german made and branded with a "British" sounding company (stationed in Berlin ;) )

Frd, I have some cheddar cheese and guess where I got it? Right here in Gliwice. You can get it from Tesco. It is Tesco's own and is really good. Half the price of other quality cheeses. I come to Zabrze for quality (Makro). Gliwice is right by you :)

Fish and chips? I guess some Poles like it :)

Ketchup? My wife goes through it like there's no tomorrow.

Do you mean there's cheddar cheese in Zabrze's Makro? I live within the walking distance ; o I actually jog around Makro 3 times a week... if not well I'm gonna have to pay a visit to Gliwice's Tesco... who would have though I actually had a little investigation going on some time ago, trying to find some cheddar in Zabrze ; )

Thanks!

No, I meant that I go to Zabrze for quality products so I am sure you can come through to Gliwice for some :)

They have some really good cheeses in Tesco here. As a Brit, I can vouch for the cheddar. Not as good as some I have tasted but remarkable value for the price.

Oh, fish and chips. Try different types before forming an opinion. There is a fair difference between chippies.

Yes, i guess as i stated earlier - i just wasnt lucky enough to have good fish and chips perhaps.

As Brits, do u also like marmite? It seems national love - cheddar and marmite... and chicken tikka masala :P

Marmite? Some do and some don't. It's a love/hate thing oftentimes. I love it!

I'm from a coastal city so we get very fresh fish, right off the boat. There's a fish bar called The Torry Bar and the fish there is orgasmic :) (not literally) ;)

We have The Ashvale and The Dolphin, 2 award-winning chippies. However, some local establishments are worth scoping out as their food is sensational.

Fish and chips (under different names, of course) have been served in Poland before many poster on PF were born. The recipes may have differed in detail but in essence fried fish and chips (frytki) are not the latest that EU blessed Poland with.

The food of that kind was mostly found in coastal areas and the establishments specializing in the food were called "smazalnia ryb".

English fish and chips is different than polish one. I mean the fish is prepared differently. They cook it in oil so it is oily as hell, while Poles fry it. It makes a big difference though.

I did say there are difference but I still think they are details. Polish frytki and fish were fried in oil too. You say Brits cook it in oil, but that's splitting hairs. I say they deep fry it in oil.

If you think deep frying is really cooking, so be it. By extension, frying is shallow cooking :)

The Brits are obsessed with gravy. Chips with gravy, no thanks!

Must be the changed taste of food after Poland became exposed to the many benefits of opening to EU. After all, ketchup hides real taste of food very well.

Well, yes, i purposedly said cooking and not deep frying to point out there is lots and lots of oil :P while frying uses a little oil only so the fish wont stick to the frying pan. And it is not just little detail, it makes huge difference. I would say english fish (in fish and chips) is more like japanese tempura. The way of preparing makes big difference.

That will depend on what "little" means and how "little oil" you pour on the frying pan.
Again, there are surely differences, further advanced by the use of different condiments etc. Deep frying, including that of fish and chips, was not unknown in Poland in pre-EU heavenly period either. Anybody who went to Poland's North was guaranteed to have fish and chips if they wanted the taste.

Ha! Next time I'm in Warsaw, I'm definitely going there! :)

It's quite expensive though isn't it? British food at British prices!

I wonder if they have big jars of pickled cucumbers on the counter, like over here? Would be a bit strange if they didn't, considering we love our ogórki but English people don't really eat them, except with fish and chips lol.

A bit off-topic, but I read that fish n chips is probably Italian in origin. It kicked off in Britain in the mid nineteenth century, roughly the same time as waves of Italian immigrants arrived. In Tuscany there is a traditional dish called 'frita pescara en bari' - or something like that, I forget the spelling. It is, of course, fried fish in batter.

Maybe i just haven't had a good fish & chips yet

Try from the Coast best fish and chips you'll ever have ;)

I personally cant stomach salt and vinegar so i cant have that on mine .. but i am partial to a nice cod and mushy peas (i don't ask for chips as i don't eat them)

big jars of pickled cucumbers

i always thought they were called Gerkins ;)

I suppose they are, haha!

They're called "wallies" in London, lol :)

What is there not to like?

Fish & Chips just totally rules. And the fish part was originally Jewish, so of course Poles will like it; look in any Jewish cookbook - it's like a Polish cookbook without the pork ;)

What he said ;)
