Polish city that's moved to Britain

I tend not to go wandering around in the night, but £ódź is a nice place to go for a walk. Stara Praga too.

The city's council is planing to sue editors of the Sun.

I doubt they'll get very far. A city trying to sue a newspaper because they disagree with an article would just be laughed out of any English court. Should they try to sue in a Polish court they could only sue the tiny number of outlets that distribute the newspaper in Poland and would probably still get nowhere. In any case, Mr Murdoch has better lawyers than the city of £ódź.

It was probably just an off the cuff statement from their press office. Trying to sue would be a pointless waste of money they could better spend elsewhere.

If it were feasible, every other guidebook would be sued.

One the one hand, sometimes people don't like their city to be criticised by outsiders, on the other hand, there was a bit of truth in the article.

I agree with Hipis about the photo of Piotrkowska though. It certainly wasn't the middle of the day. Probably dawn on a public holiday.

That's how Piotrkowska looks about 12 am. It gets more crowded in the evenings.

Well in the greater order of things they are right. Poland's population shrinking to about fifteen millions. No industry, so called green belt for the EU.

Anyway general imprison of average Joe in Poland would be that everything going to the dogs.

Wow. I've never seen it that quiet.

The article is slanted in order to hold he attention of a readership who've mostly never been there. This is normal. There have also been some pretty daft articles about the UK in the Polish media.

Equally, there could have been an article about Manufaktura, the film school, Piotrkowska at night etc. I remember reading such articles in the UK press, but I suppose that it's more interesting to discuss on internet fora when people are offended.

The article sounds as if the cause of suffering for the city was immigration, which is a nonsense.

Also an average hudsonhicks might think after reading that, that half of the Lodz moved to Britain for benefity and now one can be sure that it's not the feeble 2 milions but 2 345 001 Poles in the UK already! ;)

Their dark reason was to keep people reading, and to appeal to their market.

A shame though that a lot of people might take it at face value.

I feel shame that the main tourist attraction in a big city is... a shopping mall !

I struggles to find anything ineteresting to see if you ask me, but maybe outsiders eyes would judge better. Have you been in any of Lodz textile tycoons palaces, did you like it? Does it make worth visiting it?

people on the street have a figure the gov has their figure, its well, well over a million. i was in a shop the other day looking for some sports wear, three white families happened to be in ear shot of me and every one was Polish. In this particular shop the Asians and the Poles outnumbered the English about 3-1.

I'm not knocking immigration - just saying, there are lots here. Much more than the official figures.

WB how do you know that, have you counted them? Do immigrants have national flag stickers stuck to their foreheads? How a Briton can distinguish: a Pole, a Lithuanian, a Czech, a Slovakian, a Hungarian, a Russian, an Ukrainian... maybe all the newcommers are 2 mln althogether.

Well i know the language, and from the ones i hear only, the numbers are high. Even the Poles here say there are too many, the competition between them is quite fierce actually.

Many of the Brits that have an issue with Poles work with them, they know them, they talk to them. There are certain jobs advertised only for Poles, and in certain places if you don't speak Polish you will not get much conversation.

Its in the Govs interest to keep the numbers low, as they really made a mistake with this one.

Whats your angle for denying it? Do you know many people that work in the UK?

i can tell Polish from a mile away, i guarantee if we were walking down the street i could tell with about 8/10 accuracy who is Polish. Quite a few Brits can tell by now.

It's the Neo-liberal agenda- The West don't want to admit that it was all a disaster and the Polish government are just lame ducks bowing to the market.

I hate the Sun but Lodz is focked even more so than other cities in POLAND.

the language is a bit of a giveaway with Polish people......and a particular fashion look ....
like if there's a couple in lidl where the woman is wearing a ski jacket, jeans and stiletto heels and has her hair dyed red and the guy has a number one haircut and

You live in Lodz and you know nobody that left to work in England, that seems very strange to me. My wife knows hundreds from her city, and its nowhere near as big as Lodz. I didnt have much contact with Poles when i lived in Poland and even i knew a few.

I know people who had been in the UK but they returned. However I know people who live in other EU country (and it's not Ireland).
