I haven't been to 'Ognisko' The Polish Club - Restaurant for many years, but I have heard it's a great place to have a traditional Polish meal ..... but at a price £££'s :o)

The address is 55 Exhibition Road, London SW7 2PN, right next to Imperial College, and just round the corner from The Albert Hall and the museums.

If you want to impress a Polish girl, then this is the place to take her for a romantic meal; reserving a table is recommended.

Gessler at Daquise

So my favourite Polish plumper is muscling-in on the London market now??? lol, I'm so out of touch! :D Judging by my walk around town yesterday, she seems to own half the "tablecloth" restaurants in Kraków now :0

hehe, I used to go there with my wife, so we're talking quite some time ago (early to late 1990s). it wasn't exactly a Michelin restaurant back then, but we knew what to expect - traditional Polish food, in an old-style Polish atmosphere (i.e., one which anyone who grew up in the UK's Polish clubs would understand).

Not quite the sort of place you would take a new girlfriend to, but definitely OK to go to with 'er indoors :) We always preferred our own respective mum's cooking though.

The best place back then was the Patio on the corner of Goldhawk Road, W12 - wonderful food, a proper Polish "dining room" atmosphere, but (in true Polish style) the restaurant was too hot lol. Judging by reviews, it's gone downhill since then.

'Ognisko' The Polish Club - Restaurant

Always felt a bit out-of-place there, like we were too young to go. Come to think of it, I probably still feel too young to go there. Mind you, I hardly look like a typical middle-aged Pole, lol

That isn't Magda Gessler.

Some of the reviews seemed to think it was, lol. I must admit I was a bit surprised.

Nope. And judging from the comments made in that thread by them, the management there are the type of arrogant cocktards who need to be fired by whoever really does own the place.

Hardly surprising for the area though; I worked round there for years, so I'm not surprised that a once fairly cheap traditional restaurant has taken the "poncey" route.

Polish food is basic and tasty, it cant be made posh, it should be made in some grandmother's kitchen. An attempt at making Polish food to Michelin standards is gonna fall down im afraid

Go to Atelier Amaro, have the eight course menu and that make that statement.

Howcan one make bigos look attractive? TOp restaturants are all about presentation as well as taste

Howcan one make bigos look attractive?

Serve it on top of a large placek kartoflany which has been specially shaped with one of those pastry-cutter things.
Put some thinly-sliced cucumber arranged in a "bonfire" shape on top (you won't eat it, it's just there to make it look posh lol)

Pour some of the sauce around the plate in that stupid "posh restaurant" style.
Throw some finely-chopped fresh herbs around the plate, and you've got posh Bigos.

Then again, I'm just the man who invented balti pierogi, so what would I know :D

I managed to dig out the menu from the first time we went to Atelier Amaro (we had the five-course menu; it's a choice of three, five or eight courses, all from a set menu)

Deer tartare with marinated pumpkin, pumpkin seeds, nitro onion, mushroom salad and wild sorrel leaves.
Herring mousse covered in pumpernikiel powder, chive and aloe ice cream.
Halibut with buckwheat, apple and sorrel sauce , steamed cabbage and beetroot barbapapa.
Hare in acorn, sunflower risotto with burnt hay and oak sauce.
Lavender brioche with pine and juniper ice cream.

Don't expect to have a lot of change left out of a grand (as in maybe a couple of hundred at most, and that's if you stay off the wine list).

Why? Nordic food is incredibly popular at the minute, so why can't Polish food be made to such standards?

Hi,
I'm English with a Polish wife.
The best one I've been to is Tatra in Goldhawk Road, Shepherds Bush, tel 020 8749 8193.
Great food, nice atmosphere, friendly service. Interesting range of vodkas plus Polish beers, albeit at UK prices !!!
And no, neither of us work for them......

Some of the best dinners I have been to in Warsaw, for the experience and atmosphere are Club Vivanova: linkedin.com/groups/Next-Club-Vivanova-event-in-1876006.S.179165303 the chap behind it is English named Bradley Mitton with over 18 years experience in his field.

Hello all,

I would like to try Polish food and would appreciate if you could recommend a restaurant that does justice to Polish cuisine. I am not Polish, but there are so many that it is difficult to make a decision.

THANKS.

Tatra (Goldhawk Road, Sherpherds Bush)- Great value, pretty consistently good, we had our engagement drinks there downstairs and they did a really impressive buffet for everyone.

Daquise (Thurloe Street, Kensington)- Generally good, but inconsistent, sometimes the food just seems to taste better than other times. They do takeaway which is great in theory, but it doesn't seem to travel well (but then that's not really their fault, as the food is meant to be eaten when served obviously). We go there every few months and have had no real complaints to be honest, a bit more expensive than Tatra and busier too, so you do need to book at peak times, most other times you should be fine.

Ognisko (Exhibition Road, Kensington)- Wow, excellent....but you pay for it and we went just after the refurb when the menu was still half price!!!

Polish Centre (King Street, Ravenscourt Park)- There are 3 restaurants in here, well one café on the ground floor which is pretty basic (nice enough, but not much choice), one canteen style place on the top floor, which is very good value and I think a better selection than the café downstairs (a much better drinks selection too). The restaurant however on the first or second floor is pretty nice, I've only been once, but I remember being quite impressed. Its priced similarly to Daquise and is pretty decent.

Patio Restaurant Presently, it is one of the most successful Polish restaurants in London.

Hello. Does anyone know of a polish restaurant in the north west- Liverpool, Manchester, Chester etc?

You can try and report how the Polish food tastes there: happydayliverpool.co.uk or autograf.biz/kontakt.html

Sorry!!! I actually meant Patio not Tatra!

Patio is where we had our engagement drinks, Tatra is nearby and whilst nice, with some excellent self infused vodka I didn't think the food was as good as Patio.
