A male friend of mine is visiting Krakow with his GF next week for 5 days but he is vegetarian i know from memory there is a couple of vegetarian places to eat, but obviously doesnt want to eat in the same places for the 5 days that he is there, will he find it a struggle eating out in many places or would he be okay asking for a vegetarian menu :)
I struggled with this. Krakow was the very city in which I returned to carnivorousness. I had been a veg-head before this. I think it was the ox-tongue!
But really, I think you'll have more trouble if you're a wine drinker.
I like chimera.com.pl. Good restaurant downstairs, and more casual food on the ground floor in a nice courtyard. It's not just veggie but they have wonderful salads, vegetable pies, vegetable and fruit juices.
For a quick bite of lunch there is always the milk bar type places - I suppose quality might vary but you can get a heap of largely veggie based, nutritious and fairly tasty stuff very cheaply.
Wouldn't eaxactly be a prime destination for a dinner date though.
Yes, it's a restaurant chain all over Poland. Despite lack of meat;) everything there is nic, also you can get some discounts there easily. But Glonojad is not a network, has interesting menu and a cool logo :D
Most of those "food by weight" places have quite a bit of vegetarian fare on the menu. I'm pretty partial to meat, but at the cafeteria places, I usually stay away from the "meat" dishes. The veggie dishes don't disappoint though :)
And for Barney, let me quote Bourdain:
"Vegetarians, and their Hezbollah-like splinter faction, the vegans ... are the enemy of everything good and decent in the human spirit."
I think Denis Leary said it best: "Not eating meat is a decision, eating meat is an instinct!"
Vegetarianism is just fine for those that choose to eat that way. I don't regard it as inherently more healthy or moral or environmentally sound than an omnivorous diet though.
People who get upset at others' food choices are generally a royal pain in the аss no matter which side they take.
For vegetarian fare when eating out in Poland, also consider milk bars (bary mleczne). The atmosphere leaves something to be desired but the food is often very good, better than a lot of much more expensive places.

Yup, yup, and yup.
Also ,there are quite a few Indian places, Italian places (pasta and veggies), Thai...
And uh, ruskie pierogi should be on the menu at that fancy Polish joint you were going to :)

Seconded.
only leaves on trees will be left...
Eats shoots and leaves?

- Why deprive yourself a balanced diet? Why, why, why? In the name of what?! :) Carcass - I am not a scavenger, there's a difference. Do you also want to feed dogs with cereal?! They wouldn't dia, but won't be in good shape either... Anyway, I agree it's up to everyone's own decision.
Vegetarianism is the healthiest diet for one's body and for the Earth. We vegetarians are the future.
I am too a Vegetarian and have been in Krakow from past two years. To be honest, Krakow has a great lot of variety to offer in Vegetarian Cuisine.
Here are some of my favorite polish dishes:
Zapiekanka: Its basically a loaf of bread, which it topped up by mountain cheese and then you can choose from a variety of garnishing (like fried onions, vegetables, three cheese, mushrooms etc). The best place to eat them is Kazimierz square. However, its available practically everywhere in Krakow.
Pieriogi:
It resembles momos or dumplings and again comes in a lot of varieties. Ruskie: With cheese, Zeminianki: with potato, Kapusta: With cabbage, Truskuwawa: With strawberries. Its a must eat if you are in Krakow. Available everywhere and price varies from 6 zl to 55 zl depending upon where you are eating it.
Placi Zeminianski:
Its a kind of deep fried potato and onion pancakes. Its a little heavy on stomach, however, its enjoyble in extreme winters. Available everywhere and ranges from 2 zl to 12 zl depending upon place where you eat it.
Indian/Asian cuisines:
Off-late, within last two years, quite a lot of indian and asian restuarants have opened up and some of them provide quality food within the value of money spend. 'Roti-Roti', a restuarant opened near Kazimierz district provides a main course with 2 rotis (indian breads) for just 15 PLN.
Italian Cuisines:
There is no derth of Pizzas and Pastas when you are in Krakow. You would find it everywhere, from City centre to the train and bus stations. A slice would typically come in around 6-8 zl and would be filling for 1 person.
Hi There's new very interesting place in Krakow now. It's called "Spoldzielnia" (Cooperative) and it serves vegan/vegetarian food made exclusively from organic local vegetables and organic ingredients. Check it here on FB facebook.com/SpoldzielniaOrganicBar or on it's website - spoldzielnia.org. Besides it's delicious meals it is coop :)
Merged: vegetarian/vegan restaurant in Lublin,krakow?
hi all, quick question on behalf a friend who is visiting Poland in a couple of weeks. my friend is vegetarian, she is allergic to eggs and fish....she is wondering if someone here can help her to look for some vegetarian/vegan restaurants...she will be in Lublin, krakow and not too sure in warsaw as well. please help her if you can. highly appreciated. thanks
There is a Greenway in both Kraków and Warsaw, but apparently not in Lublin. However, I expect there to be several good vegetarian restaurants with vegan food in Kraków and Warsaw. We have several here in Wrocław. I'd expect there to be at least one in Lublin. It is a university town. ... and, indeed, there is at least one vegan friendly restaurant in Lublin:
Pod Norenami in Krupnicza is excellent. I highly recommend it. It serves excellent Asian food. If you're looking for something more Polish then Młynek on Bonifraterska in Kazimierz (Plac Wolnica) does fairly good Polish fare. Nearby on Trynitarska (also plac wolnica) there's a new vegan burger joint that's opened up. There are others but in my experience these are the best.
