Trip to Poznan and Torun

I am thinking of booking a trip to Poznań in February.
Apart from sightseeing in Poznań, is there anywhere worth visiting in the nearby surrounding area?
I also want to go to Toruń, but unfortunately it will just be a day trip. Can anyone tell me how early and late the trains run? I know the journey is about 2.5 hrs, so i will obviously want to leave as early as possible. Not having much joy with train info on the internet, all i've managed to find out is that there are 6 a day, and it's 7 Euros each way.

Plus, is there any must not miss things to see in Toruń, given the short amount of time i will be be there for?
Thanks for any help, and Happy 2013 to you all!!

the earliest direct connection is 5.48 : the train stops at every station on the way and takes 2 hours and 38 minutes to go to Toruń

remember February can be really cold

Happy New Year pam :)

From Warszawa Centralna to Torun Główny the 7 am train is direct in February. You'll be at the Old Town at 11.

When you arrive in Torun follow everyone to the bus stop. Buy a ticket in a kiosk just before the bus stop. It will be evident. Any bus will do 25,27... It's a short ride to the Old Town. Get off on the stop just past the bridge (Plac Rapackiego). On your right is the Old Town.

A must? In the winter it is less attractive and the lively college scene in the multitude of cellar joints is at night. Climb the old City Hall tower and see The Copernicus House on...ul.Kopernika. On this street you can catch a taxi back to the train station if you prefer, 15 zl. max. See what's at the Planetarium. Buy shoes and books. :) Enjoy how much nicer people are.

Thanks for information 1jola, although i'll be going from Poznań to Toruń. Presume starting point is Warsaw. Just looked at the timetable, and journey time seems to vary a bit. Anything from 2 to 4 hrs. Is there much difference in price between Regio and TLK trains? Also, are delays/cancellations very common if it's really cold and snowing? Here in the UK everything comes to a standstill at the sign of a first snowflake lol!

I know it can get really cold, which is why i'm in two minds at the moment about booking it. It's not too cold at the moment, and i've been before when it's been really cold ( hoping for no more than -10, not -30! )

Happy New Year Gumishu :)

Not much. You can check all the prices on pkp site. Just mark the ineteresting connection with a tick, push "details for selected" button, then at the bottom you'll have "tariff" button click it.

Also, are delays/cancellations very common if it's really cold and snowing?

There might be delays for various reasons but it's impossible to forecast them. Rather not because of weather

Thanks Zetigrek, just done it. Looking at times and prices, i can go for either 51 or 67 PLN, depending on whether i decide to stay later in Toruń or not.

Yep, When i went from Gdańsk to Malbork, i was on a train that didn't move for 1 1/4 hrs :(

There are few good things about Poland, but trains aren't one of them ;)

PS. You don't wanna relay on toilet in trains (probably those on train stations too ;)

Come on, Al Kaida terrorists planted a suicidal bomber on the tracks so it had to take some time to take him/her out. Simple.

Booked my flights and i'm going next month.
Just have to hope the weather doesn't get too cold!
Anyone been to Wielkopolski national park?
I would like to spend a couple of days outside Poznań,so apart from Toruń, is there anywhere a short train trip away worth visiting?

Thanks for any help.

maybe try Kórnik castle - it has a beautiful park but sure it looks much better in summer - anyway Kórnik castle has some art and history - a trip with an English speaking guide costs 20 euro - it is a half an hour bus drive from Poznań - Kórnik castle is open 10 am -3 p.m on all days except monday

kornik.pl/en/home

there is a bus from central bus station in Poznań to kurnik at 9.30 but you need to ask the driver when to get off cause it proceeds well past Kórnik.

muzeum.uni.wroc.pl/kontakt

if you are into beautiful art Pam then the original building of the Wrocław University is worth a visit and pretty cheap (open on all days except wednesday)

This looks interesting Gumishu, and not too far to travel either, may well check it out!
The university at Wrocław does indeed look beautiful, but not sure if i have time for both a trip to Toruń and Wrocław.

Hadn't actually considered Wrocław, but time wise, it's about the same as Toruń.
Have you been to both places? If so, which would you choose to visit, bearing in mind, it would only be a day trip?

check the opening hours. for a few attractions the tourist season does not include february.

the best of wroclaw can be seen in one day. however, wandering around without knowing what you are looking at will prove to be a waste of a day.

tourist websites are not always the best place to find information. check a few photo websites like flickr. one can also find tourist/city info on facebook.

I studied in Wrocław and have only been once to Toruń - Toruń is a more cosy city especially the Old Town, but I don't know about the museums etc - the Old Town is simply nice to see as it is full of historic buildings from what I can tell - Toruń is also more of a Polish city than Wrocław (though the medieval churches were built by the Teutonic order) - has more Polish hisory to it

- Wrocław is far busier - lot's of people in the streets - and it's way bigger - if you wanted to see just a couple of old churches it would take 1 hour walk they are so far appart and they are typically not that beautiful inside - in Wrocław you need to go straight to the place you really want to see to save time (and there are only a couple of such important things of interest or beauty including Panorama Racławicka: panoramaraclawicka.pl/en/what_to_see.html) - and then just spend some time walking the main pedestrian streets

just found a website of Museum of Gingerbread in Toruń - muzeumpiernika.pl/?page=home-english - it looks like it is a live act

Wrocław is far busier

This is the first thing i thought of, the size of Wrocław. If everything i want to see is spread out over a wide area, i'm going to waste a lot of time just getting between places of interest. Can't believe it has a gingerbread museum! Thanks Gumishu

the best of wroclaw can be seen in one day.

If i go to Wrocław i'd research it pretty well first, i always do wherever i go. I'd also have to take into account travel between train stations, e.g how far outside the centre Wrocław train station is, as i haven't looked yet. This could add more time onto an already long train trip.Poznań train station isn't in the centre of poznań, and Toruń station is a bus/taxi ride away from the centre also.

Thanks for help Wrocław.

how far outside the centre Wrocław train station is

I would stick to the original plan and go to Torun. I'd hate to be the one who persuaded you to come here when your thoughts are elsewhere.

But for others following the thread. Wroclaw's main railway station is a twenty minute walk from the centre/Rynek.

Most objects of interest are within sight of each other or only minutes apart. Wroclaw is a two/three day city at most.

Well, it won't hurt to have a look at things to see in Wrocław. Knowing me i would probably want to do both trips!

Frankly, either trip will depend on the weather. I'm hoping it's not going to get too cold between now and February, although personally i think this winter's not going to be too cold. Hope these aren't going to be my famous last words.....

Merged: Visiting Poznań, Toruń....suggestions?

Hi All,

I'm going to be visiting Poznań and Toruń this summer by car - my ancestors (great grandparents) are from the general areas around those cities.

Does anyone have any interesting suggestions for cultural experiences in and around those cities?

My Polish is elementary, but I am going to try to not speak English too much.

Any help would be appreciated :)

There is nothing bad in speaking English in Poland, it's just so that not so many people speak English here and that's way it's a good idea to be able to speak some Polish when coming to Poland.
