Travel Within Poland - from Warsaw airport to Mragowo

Why is that road so dangerous?

Because of nouveau riche morons in their shiny brand new SUVs speeding and reckless driving home after shopping in Olsztyn.

Do the buses leave from the Olsztyn train station?

Yes the same building. 100 meters stroll.

Which restaurants in Mragowo do you recommend?

Ratuszowa is good, as is Stara Chata (very traditional). Neither are very near your hotel, however if you go out in the evening, they're both central.

What bus stop should we get off at? Are there several in Mragowo?

The buses all go to the bus station. As I mentioned, it's on the other side of the lake to the Mercure (which is a little off the beaten track), and you'll need to get a cab. They don't cost much at all.

Great, that sounds straightforward enough. Do you happen to know whether taxis out there would have child carseats?

I have never seen a taxi with a car seat for a child, but they may have them in the boot.

Op a few must visits in the area

Krutynia
Galkowo
Lipkowo

OP, as an add-on I believe these people giving you advice not to drive is based on their own lack of road knowledge, car transport is one of the main forms of transport in Poland, hire a car and go via the E77 slightly longer route perfectly safe and little to no road works on your route, whatever you do do not drop off in Nidzica the town is a shitfext at the moment.

Enjoy

car transport is one of the main forms of transport in Poland

What a surprise.

whatever you do do not drop off in Nidzica

A nice if ordinary little place to stop off - There's a pleasant cafe in the centre.

Jon,

I was in Nidzica last week I was invited to a cultural event in the castle. There are so many road works going on in the place its a complete **** fext... There are a few great places in Nidzica especially the guy who makes the Polish mead.

As for car transport too many foriegners in Poland make a big deal about the standard of driving, on the whole poles are great drivers in all elements.

road works

No reason to say:

whatever you do do not drop off in Nidzica

In fact Nidzica is ok - I was at the castle too recently. Worth a visit, though not necessarily a detour.

the standard of driving

Driving standards are among the worst in Europe. As shown by the exceptionally high number of road fatalities and other accidents in Poland.

On holiday, it makes sense to avoid stress and sit back and let others drive. Especially if you come from somewhere like Germany with a high quality road system and high standards of driving. The contrast btween that and driving in Mazury during the weekend is just a hassle.

Jon, so according to you the OP should arrive in Poland make their way to Mazury and not see some of the best scenery in Europe - makes no sense my friend...

You need a car in Mazury especially on a short trip.

So according to your thinking 'London' is one of the most unsafest cities in Europe due to terrorism threats and should be avoided at all costs.

so according to you

Others actually suggested that. I gave him a link to a car hire site. Nice try 'countingcrows'...

and not see some of the best scenery in Europe

You think the the bus has blacked out windows? It's pleasant scenery, though not particularly among the best in Europe..

most unsafest

The risk of having a road accident in Poland is far higher than being caught up in an incident in London.

Looks like you're trying to pick an argument, 'countingcrows'...

Jon. I am not tying to ruffle your feather boa...
Masurian Lake District - New 7 World Natural Wonder ranked, I would say its up there and should be seen in its full glory. In fact I am so convinced I bought a house there :-)

I have driven over 150,000 Klm on Polish roads - no accidents. In London I was close to two bombs going off.
Not trying to pick a spat my friend just talking truth.

The advice from several posters that he uses the train etc, is good advice.

feather boa...

?

New 7 World Natural Wonder ranked,

There was actually a huge online campaign in PL to get it in that (voluntary) ranking. You knew that...

have driven over 150,000 Klm on Polish roads

I've driven probably far more over the decades - and I dislike driving, especially in Poland. With good reason. Remember some of us "foreign people" have lived in PL far longer than some people who were born and bred there. And certainly driven far more and for far longer.

There is a reason people - not just "foreign people" - avoid driving in certain places at the weekend (the roads from Warsaw to Mazury being high on the list).

And yes, Poland does have very poor driving standards - this is a matter of official record, with one of the highest recorded accident levels in Europe.

As I stated right from the get-go you and other forum members are not fond of driving as a means of transport, moreover as you are getting on a bit, your choice mode of transport is one which you are not taking the risk of control, age will do that to you. I would agree if you are in your late 50's and more driving in Poland may not be for you.

When you dig deep Jon, all is a online campaign that marketing...

As a final it would be a shame for the OP not to see many of the sights/attractions in Mazury, its a wonderful gem of a place. With a car you can discover and see the most, without a car of course the OP's trip will be more restrictive.

I'm sure he and his family will see plenty in and around Mragowo and have a great holiday (he's chosen a nice hotel, certainly), 'countingeagles', whatever his choice of transport. He's asked for information, and received it, by and large from people, regular posters rather than 'guest posters', Europeans who have lived in PL for a long time and who know that area very well.

you are not taking the risk of control, age will do that to you

If that made sense...

Jon, that's an interesting one ' regular' v ' guset' like the regular posters are some sort of authority...
Why didn't one of the ' regulars' suggest Polskibus which is direct from Warszawa Zachodnia to Mrągowo 4 times a day and if you book well it can be 1 zloty each way. I am sitting here with a woman who originates from the outskirts of Mrągowo and you are making us smile so much, thank yu for your sense of humor. less the lionized its 2017

Why didn't one of the ' regulars' suggest Polskibus

Why not ask them. There have been several suggestions, including some good ones, and some very sound advice from people who know (rather than claim to be sitting next to someone). A long coach journey from Warsaw to Mazury isn't among them.

All I see here is a troll trying to pick an argument with his betters.

Based on the all helpful information I've received here, we plan to first withdraw money at an ATM at the Warsaw Chopin airport, then take a subway/bus to the Warsaw Central Station, then a train to Olsztyn, then a bus to Mragowo, and finally a taxi to the hotel.

Any tips on what bank ATM at the airport to use and where it is located?

Can anyone give some advice about how best to get from the Warsaw Chopin airport to the Warsaw Central train station? We will have a good amount of luggage and a child with us, so I would guess a subway might be more convenient than a bus. Any tips on which subway line to take and how to find the departure platforms in the Chopin airport?

Can anyone give some advice about how best to get from the Warsaw Chopin airport to the Warsaw Central train station?

Just get a taxi from the airport (from MPT taxi corporation). It'll cost about ten euro. You could get an Uber for about half that, but they sometimes have small cars or a boot filled with an UberEats box. You can't get the subway, it doesn't go to the airport. You could get a regional train, but most of those stop at Warszawa Srodmiescie instead of Centralna.

take a subway/bus to the Warsaw Central Station, then a train to Olsztyn, then a bus to Mragowo, and finally a taxi to the hotel.

Or you could just collect a hire car at the airport and drive straight to Mragowo. That would be much quicker (you'd be in Mragowo in four hours, which is about the same time it'll take to be on a train that's just arrived in Olsztyn), cost about the same, be easier (assuming you don't speak Polish) and give you a car to use while you're in Poland. It's certainly what I'd do.

I agree with Harry on the car hire route, use Michelin route planner for the journey, they are up to date with road works. Which could put hours on your journey... Most car hire companies will have child boosters for hire. There are many great little villages and lakes to see in Mazury for you and your family.enjoy.
