Starbucks is about to enter the Polish market, I know this because I work in the Real Estate Market and know them to be looking for space in several locations.

I'm talking about Warsaw just to clarify.

Maybe I could shed some light on why in Starbucks seems to be everywhere in the Uk and have as yet not overrun Poland.

A couple of comments as to relates to Poland. The clustering talked about by Buddy is a fact in the US and apparently in the UK.... Just walk around Manhattan and every 4th door was a Starbucks... but now with the eco down turn I think a lot of stores opened during clustering are closing. In the current climate this old model might be out?

I also don't see this practice happening in Poland as there does not appear to be a need to cluster and drive other shops out. Also as an American sometimes after a long time on the road is nice to just go into a little piece of home where I know what I will be getting... good or bad.

I also just like to collect the Starbucks City Mugs so when opens in Poland will be looking to get my mug!!

i don't understand why ppl like their products?? :S It is truly the most tasteless. Over roasted...

i don't understand why ppl in PL are so jacked up to support an american company that has a business philosophy to destroy it's competition, like mom and pop coffee shops that support a family (or 2 or 3) and put them out of business.

I love it when I read that Starbucks had closed 900 shops worldwide, it brings a smile to my face. They slaughtered their competition and became a victim of their own formula.

Unfortuantely there are no winners.

Support your neighbourhood small business!!!!!

As a coffee fiend I always have to ask for extra shots at Starbucks

Aaah....a fellow red-eye fan. I thought it was only New Yorkers who ask for that.

Has anyone been to "Coffee Heaven" in Krakow? They have several cafes, one at bottom of Karmelicka street. The coffee is always very good and nice atmosphere and friendly staff.

When I go to Krakow, I also like to go to small cafe at top of Empik bookstore at main square. Good views of the square. Although, I think it has new management now so not so good.

We have a few Starbucks now in Ireland. But coffee I think is not so good. It is like water, not enough coffee in it. I dont think they are anything special.

Can anyone recommend some real Polish cafes in Krakow? I love the little cake shops in Poland where you can buy some cakes and coffee for eat in or take out. its a real treat.

i've been to many Coffee Heavens in PL and CZ - more for convenience rather than because they do good coffee - which they don't.

But the staff are indeed rather good (especially in CZ, unsurprisingly) and their leather sofas are lovely :)

Best coffee I've had recently in PL was, rather surprisingly, at the new terminal at Okęcie - where Wedel have a small cafe.

Fortunately Costa are making some inroads into the area, so a decent espresso should be available everywhere soon (i.e. not just at my aunty's, lol) and hopefully Starbucks will continue to close branches (haha).

I wish I could remember what it's called, but there's a really small, dark, dungeon-like place in an alley just off the main market square which was great, AND inexpensive (a year ago, anyway). I think it's between ul.Grodzka and Pasaz Bielaka, or at least off one of the streets at that side of the square, but I'd have to go there again to find it, sorry.

I've been to some in Katowice, the coffee is worse than in Starbucks, the same with pastry - and it's still quite expensive... I can recommend "Cynamon" cafe but I only know about the one in Katowice and Gdynia : o

Anyway, Polish people aren't the best coffee makers either ,if I remember correctly.....

And I am sure you don't who introduced coffee to the "western" world and opened the first coffee house in Vienna(Europe?).The guy name was Jerzy Franciszek Kulczycki and it took place in 1683 after victory over Turks at the gates of Vienna where king Sobieski's army plundered Turkish camp and took a lot of booty including coffee beans.Another of his innovations was to serve coffee with milk, a manner that was unknown to the Turks.

I am also a coffee junkie but I think Starbucks is way overpriced.

but also of important note is the first Burger King is coming too...

They are coming back.Burger King was already in PL in the early 90ies .I remember they paid a bilion (pre 95) złotych to B.Linda for commercials.

very cool for those who need something quick and a slice of home. Actually one of the reasons I enjoy old Europe is the lack of BK and Starbucks and strip malls. Also the other benifit is just a warm place to still on a cold Warsaw afternoon with a friend....

Bieganski:Who will stop this onslaught?

Why?

It seems I know why:
They use sub-par coffee beans and price it as if they were brewing the good stuff. Instead of saying "we use cheap burnt South American robusta coffee beans" they say, "we use a wonderful, straightforward blend of Latin American coffees." What's a "straightforward blend" anyway?

It seems you like drinking crap and paying through the nose for it! To each his own. :):):)

An interesting quote from my link:
Honestly, I think that the majority of people go to Starbucks because it makes them feel "trendy," and they like that. I actually feel kind of dorky going into one sometimes because I feel like people think I'm trying to be trendy, too. I just want coffee. And if I buy coffee before I go somewhere, I usually try to drink it before I go in. I also think that a lot of people that go there regularly really have no idea what "good" coffee tastes like, so they have no argument.

Its the same with Burger King, everything coming from the West was worshiped after the fall of the curtain.

I like their coffee. And I just checked their website: Warsaw has 11 locations, Wrocław has 6 and 3-city has 4. They are mushrooming indeed. :-)
