Is Sleeping in Car in Poland (while passing) legal?

Hi. I would like to find out is it legal to sleep in my car while passing Poland. Although I would like to take some cheap motels, I would like also to have some backup option if these are no avail.

Sure, no-one will bother you. I had the misfortune of sleeping in mine a few weeks ago after getting stuck in a horrific storm on the motorway. :(

I don,t think anyone is going to bother you if you sleep in your car...

I used to sleep in my truck often enough when driving for a firm in Poland , and i have slept in my car a few times too...

I don,t know if its legal or not , but if you sleep in your car in some quiet place i suspect you will be left alone...

Probably not a good idea to have a few beers after stopping for the night in case you can be accused of being drunk in charge of the car..

Best tip, take down one half of your back seat,sleep with your legs in the boot of the car,the folded down backseat fills in the gap and adds a bit of a head rest. Apart from being more comfortable you are also low profile and any casual glance at the car and no one will know you are in it.

Thats my back up plan for Edinburgh in August as its festival time and hotels are a nightmare.

Yes. But choose somewhere quiet, do not do it in a paid private car park and remember that Polish winters are seriously cold.

They are... if you are sleeping in your car in winter , you need an army sleeping bag thats good for minus 30...

I have survived sleeping in a car at minus 40... you need a good bag for that...

Actually, wouldn't this be the best place to do it? Where I keep my car - they'd be happy for someone to sleep there!

If they're ok about it, yes.

Choose petrol stations, place in range of CCTV cameras. I bet you won't be alone there.

The only problem with sleeping in a car park , is that every passing bandit can see that here is a car with possibly a rich tourist in it...and all alone a long way from home....

When i was tootling about in the depths of Russia , Belarus , Ukraine and other places i used to camp in the forest miles from the nearest town...easy to do when you have a 4 x 4...

If there is nobody there , then nobody can bother you....

It's also recommended for truckers to pull over and a take snooze, when feeling a sense of fatique.


Are there many inexpensive outdoor camping areas in Poland? Folks may considering paying a small fee, in order to camp in/out of their vehicle for the night.


Probably a good idea to bring along a thin solar blanket too, for extra warmth.

And dont forget to dress in lots of layers and bring a pair of insulated gloves and a hat that covers the ears. I like ones with earflaps that tie under the chin. With a good hat, long sleeves, a t shirt and insulated gloves, I dont feel the cold. The hat and gloves are essential in frigid temps!

Oh and on your feet, might want to invest in a good pair of snowboots and some kind of insulated or self warming socks. Just be sure your head, hands and feet are protected. You can buy some hand warmers, too. They fit in your pocket and keep your hands warm.
