Hello,

We plan to rent a car in Germany and travel through Poland.
Are there any special customs documents we need to cross the border?

thank you for your help

Just the green insurance card, registration, and the rental agreement.

Make sure that Poland is included on the green card, and not crossed out.

Consider taking a train from Germany to Poland and renting a car in Poland. This is the most parsimonious option.

There's no green cards anymore within the EU - you just need the insurance documents. But you have to check - many rental companies are funny with what countries you can take a car to - it's not a given that they will automatically allow the car to be taken to Poland.

One thing to bear in mind when renting a car in the EU is that insurance policies can be different to what you expect from the US.

That'd be the green card on the continent. I just got a new one from ceska pojistovna. The rental agreement will also usually list the countries that are excluded.

Hello

Try with Avis. They allow cars to enter Poland without any additional requirements.

I drove from Germany to Poland on 4 January. We crossed the border near Szczecin (northwestern Poland) and encountered no checks at all. It was a non event.

If you get stopped, you might want to make sure that you have your documents in order...especially in a rental.

And to add to this, just because there's no controls doesn't mean anything - you absolutely must carry a valid travel document (the Karta Pobytu/driving licence isn't enough) when crossing an internal border.

No problem to hire a car in Germany and drive to Poland.
However, you must tell them what countries you will be visiting.
They will only hire out certain car groups for cross country journeys.
For example, they wont allow high spec cars to cross the border, as
they are often stolen. There is a big market for stolen German cars
in Poland.
But be carefull, as some poles hate Germans. I only know this after
someone keyed the car when I was parked in Warsaw.
Have a fun drive!

Well, I've had wipers stolen from German plated rentals twice, and once had all four tires knifed. Lots of rental companies have restrictions on the type of car you can take across the border. Europcar was one of the few companies a couple years back which would allow you to take their cars across the border, they wouldn't let you take VW, Audi, or Mercedes to Poland.

Make sure that you have a full coverage insurance policy, and watch the deductible.

I wouldn't call that "hate"....they love those cars to much! ;)
