Poland in photo riddles

I see what looks to be an old model, possibly WW2, machine gun in a bunker, and a hurricane lamp on the wall.
I'm presuming this is in a military museum somewhere? There is a Museum of Military Technology in Dąbrówka, and of course, the Polish Army Museum in Warsaw, but it wouldn't surprise me if this is another torturous riddle and it's somewhere obscure ;)

Sorry, none of these places. But it isn`t so torturous as it seems because you are close. One big hint - the bunker is real, really huge, excellently preserved, exactly as it was during 1939 campaign.


I am happy you joined the thread. However, there are two little problems. :):)

1. Why do you pollute the thread with the UK photos? Didn`t you notice the title?

2. When I wrote Random pics, it didn`t mean one can post anything curious about Poland. This thread is for riddles, NOT ANY pics. So your photo of a square toilet is intriguing indeed, thanks, but you should have made a riddle out of it.

I hope now everything is clear if it wasn`t so before. :)

PS. Chemikiem`s and my riddles are challenging which means the process of guessing takes a lot of time because it requires at least medium intelligence combined with enough determination and good detective skills. Therefore, you might have had an impression of boring or slow thread, indeed. It is a pity but currently the forum lacks members with before mentioned qualities - too many people prefer to spend time in Random or US News, and they aren`t really interested in getting to know Poland other than in travel agent`s brochures.

Your posting UK photos wasn`t new life, though, it was simply against the rules and misinformation, because some readers might have thought they showed Poland while they didn`t.

Thank you for your noble attempts which, despite being off the point, are really appreciated, I hope your next riddles will really breathe some new life in here.

I am always close, but never close enough!! I have come to the conclusion that there are hundreds of bunkers in Poland............and I've been looking at loads of them.

Ok, some new guesses that will be wrong! Somewhere in or near Ustka e.g Blucher bunker? Hel fortified area? Nowogród? Although that doesn't look huge. I ruled out some in eastern Poland forest areas as they aren't well preserved, although trying to find out if bunkers are well preserved or not isn't particularly easy. I've tried to think relative to the September campaign, but is it in areas of German or Soviet invasion, for example?

It is easy. When you can get inside and imagine that you would be able to spend there a few hours or even days, it means the bunker is well preserved. :):)

Oops, these are probable signs you are getting tired with the riddles. Just like a workmate of yours who walked away murmuring that clocks would haunt her for the rest of the day. I don`t want you to have nightmares about bunkers - how you get lost in them and can`t get out. Reminds me of one episode of old Avengers series - an evil guy tricked the female detective into his house and it turned out it was a clever trap with many tricky psychodelic gadgets. Did you watch it? :):)

Don`t forget to think about the newest riddle of the building which looks like what? Church?

As for the building, I'm still thinking. This one will be tough I'm sure. If it's a church, it has a pretty feeble looking spire........

A hint - a big part of this building displays glass wall. We can guess it isn`t an office, where else then is such glass surface common?

You'll laugh at this one, but my first thoughts on seeing that building was that it is some type of resort, thermal baths, spa type of thing, and a pool is housed inside. It's not going to be that though.........but I bet it's in southern Poland.

I never laugh when people are doing their best. Bingo, it is a newly built swimming pool in a spa village of Wysowa Zdrój in southern Poland. We used to go there every year to drink healthy mineral waters after which I always felt like King Kong. :):):)

Yes, of course, but that`s an international name. Can you also provide the traditional Polish name of the holiday? :):) The photo suggests it.

As for the houses, they look beautiful but I have never seen them, the only thing I was able to google was that similar buildings, mock "castles" for wealthy businessmen, were built in Sopot and area by German achitects before the war (Schultz or Hofacker). I checked the drawing of the sun on the facade and that blue and yellow flag (consulate?) but nothing. Not so easy. :(:(:

The Day of the ( Herbal ) Mother of God. It is connected with blessing and offering gifts of herbs, flowers, vegetables etc.


Wrong part of the country I'm afraid, and the architect was Polish. The house with the sundial, called Pod Sową ( If you look carefully you can see the owl above and to the left of the entrance ), was the architect's own family home, number 10. The sundial also bears the insciption, 'you see the hour, you do not know the hour, in Latin. The house next door, number 8, forms part of a radio station headquarters these days. Number 8 was built in 1899, and number 10 in 1900.

If these little clues are not enough, I will have to post a pic of a large and well known landmark only a stone's throw away from these beautiful houses :)

Some prewar 'willas' are just beautiful. It's a pity so many are neglected nowadays.

I thought those are some houses in Wroclaw. Since you have asked for an architect ..hmm.. it must be Krakow or Zakopane, Witkiewicz? A guess.

Thanks, without this and other hints it was impossible to guess. These houses are in Chestnut Tree Avenue in Reszów, designed by Tekielski.

Hey, it seems Rzeszów is your favourite place in Poland! Your previous riddle was also from Rzeszów. But it is one of few cities I haven`t visited so you can always beat me here. :)

The architect's house in the picture had fallen into disrepair, but was rescued by Marta and Mariusz Półtorak. Marta had fallen in love with the villa as a student, and then ended up owning it and restoring it to its former glory :)

I did like Rzeszów, but it's not my favourite place in Poland. So far, I am torn between a couple of places for that, but I may well change my mind after future visits........

At a wild guess I would say it's a Chinchilla in the pet carrier, but I'm going only on colour and tail, can't really see much more of it!

My uncle who lived near Rzeszów used to breed some. The thing in the picture looks kind of more fluffy but I can't remember much about nutria so why not; )

No, of course I wanted the English name of the holiday, but translated from the traditional Polish name. :)

Sorry, neither chinchilla nor coypou. Look at the hand which is touching the furry thing - it is the hand of a few years old kid, that thing is giant in comparison, chinchillas are much smaller. As for coypu, it has brown fur, not grey., and not so fluffy as the thing in the picture.

The fur looks like that of a rabbit, but it has a long tail. I doubt a fox would be that placid in a pet carrier. Obviously not a grey cat, too simple. I need to think some more......
