Poland in photo riddles

I'm just very interested in Art. I hadn't actually seen that picture, but the style was very definitely his.
My favourite Polish artist is Gustaw Gwozdecki. I tried really hard to get hold of a print of his painting Kobieta z flagą a few years ago, but I couldn't find anywhere I could buy it. I saw the painting in Poznań's National Museum and I couldn't take my eyes of it close up.

Unfortunately, I'm clueless about the the artist known for collages.
Maybe someone else will know.

Yes, he is known but does not belong to mainstream art. And I think you don`t mean flag but flask.

Hint - he used to live and work in southern Poland, in a famous mountainous resort. I visited his museum/study/home in 1980s.

Another easy one.These portraits are of foreign emperors who ruled Poland. Where can they be found?

The two emperors and 1 empress are rulers who carried out the partitions of Poland. In the background I can see this characteristic old style German writing. So it should be a museum located in one of the partition countries - Germany or Austria, preferably in the capital city. After checking the artist who painted the Catherine Great portrait, I learnt it is on display in Kunsthistorische Museum in Vienna.

Who is sitting and watching what?

Aah, so the portraits are copies! You didn`t warn us about it. :) it is Museum of Polish Jews in Warsaw.

That would be the Emperor Nero. He is watching a group of Christian martyrs about to be burned alive, as allegedly, they were the perpetrators of the Great Fire of Rome.

The painting is called Pochodnie Nerona ( Nero's Torches ) by Henryk Siemiradzki. On display In Kraków.

Key hint: its title is based not on what one of them is doing but on what two others are going to do. :):)

The painting is called Podaj Cegłę ( Pass the Brick ) by Aleksander Kobzdej and its style is an example of Socialist Realism.

As for the influence on Polish music, are you talking about the musical counterculture of 'forbidden' jazz music being played in underground cellars as a rebellion to state-backed music? At that time, the communist world view was promoted by presenting labour-related themes, and therefore state-backed songs were the order of the day, no non-Polish or non-Soviet music allowed. Musically, people listened to film soundtracks, radio orchestras, art song etc

The question about music was a bonus without a point. Just a little curiosity. I didn`t mean underground jazz of the stalinist times, but much later times. Hint - music in the pretty female version.

That painting also looks familiar, stuff of nightmares though.........I will have to think because I get the feeling I might be confusing it with one by a non-Polish artist.


I feel gutted now, I have a couple of pic of Arturs Court from when I went, but for some reason, didn't go inside :(

Yes, her best record from 1981 contained the song "Pass the brick" A cult album which I still listen to today, I recommend it to you.


Hint - it was a male artist and rumours claimed he wasn`t himself when creating most of his art.

Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz. The painting is called Composition and was painted in 1922.

Yes. Allegedly he was drugged when painting such stuff but it could be a self-made legend.
