Driving to Poland from England - any tips?

If you use the breakdown services too many times in a year , you get a letter warning you that you can be refused cover...

I had a couple of unlucky breakdowns with an old Landrover i had , called the AA out four times in one year...they sent me a letter telling me i could lose cover if i called em out again....

Fortunately they do not share that data with the other companies (hence the comment about my friend needing to to change companies).

Are you sure? I thought it was only restricted in the first bit after the Berliner Ring to 120km/h? Could be wrong though - but you always see maniacs in Polish plates driving like complete idiots there.

But in his case - he's going to the South, so I'm not so sure that it's sensible going via the A2 at all. I'd be looking at going via the German and Polish A4 instead - really, there's a multitude of ways through Germany, but definitely, you want to be crossing the border at Gorlitz.

I drove it 18 hours ago. There are 120km/h signs everywhere now since the road works finished. There were 4 police cars within the first 20km of Germany at 02.00 this morning too.

The Belorussians are the worst drivers that i've seen.

Well, in that area but the Omani's and Albanians are really really dangerous in cars.

The Ukrainians and Russians come pretty close too...saterday night in Moscow is like death race 2000...only on a bigger scale...!

True, if he is going to Ustron near Cieszyn, then going there via Frankfurt (Oder) and Poznan is bad choice (at least for another 2-3 years). Much better would be entering Poland in Goerlitz/Zgorzelec and use A4.

Jeez, what's the point? The section nearest the Berliner Ring is dangerous and should have a 120km/h limit on it, but the first bit after Swiecko? Pointless!

If anything, it would make sense to slap a 140km/h limit on it. But I guess they realise that Polish drivers will do 140km/h on the A12 anyway, so maybe it's not so stupid.

Any idea what kind of tolerance is applied in Germany in regards to the 120km/h limit?

They must have loads of pictures of my passenger seat on their database by now.

You'll know if you hit one, especially if it's the middle of the night.

Tickets don't seem to make it out of Germany though, just like everywhere else.

That said, my car starts making noises about 100m before I pass a camera.. very odd.

They're quite dangerous, that intense red light flashing in your eyes at high speed can't be safe.


:) I had one of those but it pissed me off so much I sold it to some boy racer idiot who ironically lost his licence for speeding within 3 weeks of buying it from me and then wanted his money back.

I was flashed on that road 1 year ago but I have not been given a fine.

I drove past a police car at 140km/h and he was not bothered.

I think its just stupid speeding that they are after.

Hi my fiancee and our 14 month old son are going to Stary Sacz in the south this month to see our family. I am a Brit who has a wealth of experince of driving on the left but is yet to drive through europe. We are following someone to get there but the return journey is a bit sceptical as we only rely on sat nav. I drive a 2004 M3 and the sat nav has proved not so good on previous forums. Well we shall see.. Any advice tips? Especially as my family are travelling. The help is much regarded, we leave on the 26th April.

BMW sat nav is fuc king shocking, I removed the one from the 7 series as there was really no point to having it and to update it I had to go and visit BMW who wanted a fortune for the update CD. (I take it your on about the e46 model with the widscreen navi and cd drive in the boot)

If you treasure your car don't drive it to Poland, The roads are shocking and I have damaged several of my cars not to mention the peasants will steal parts from it while its parked Headlights, door handles and most definately your "M" badges (these will later be refitted to a **** rusty 4 banger e36 driven by the shaven headed type).

I even had fuel stolen once :( The standard of driving here is really low - non existant coupled with poor roads makes driving a decent car here and keeping it in one piece nearly impossible.

Rent something to drive to Poland like a Mondeo/Vectra etc as the rental cost will be far less than putting your car right when you return to the UK.

I've had mirrors stolen, metal grill, plastic trim inserts, and wind shield wipers. I just replaced the mirrors and wipers with the cheapest I could find (stick on mirrors for a peugeot from halfords), and haven't bothered with the rest.


Here's hoping that you left the stock suspension in (it's pretty soft if I remember correctly). The roads are pretty atrocious. And watch out for those holes, good way to crack your front spoiler.

Take a plane ... GBP 243 for you and your family return ticket with Wizzair from for example Luton to Katowice, then rent a car with for example express.pl for 18 or 25 E a day with free mileage. No hassle with your own car and probably all in all cheaper as well. You can even rent a local satnav.

Don't forget, you'll be using about 350 litres of fuel if driving from London (GBP1,20 in UK, E1,48 in B, E1,58 in NL and E1,40 in D), so it's actually a lot cheaper. And with the harsh winter we've had throughout Europe, you can expect hundreds of potholes (okay, not on the motorway) which can seriously damage your car.

hi if anyone can help me im driving to starogard gdanski poland in jun from ireland:) i have a 99 mazda 1.5 just whant to know how much money will it take me to get there? and how long will i be driving for? i think yee all are from england so anyone know were is the tunil that when i get of the ferry in england i can get this tunil that will bring me right to france?

Get the ferry to Liverpool...drive along the m62 to Hull....catch the ferry to Rotterdam , then drive the A1 ( E30 ) ..... Just past Berlin , go north on the A11 ( E28 ) to just south of Szczecin , and then take the 10 route to Walz...From Walz its the 22 route all the way to Starogard Gdanski.....

Have a safe trip.... I reckon it will take you about 14 hours from Rotterdam to Starogard , taking it steady , and with lots of rest stops....The ferry takes about 11 hours to get from Liverpool to Rotterdam...

If you can tell us if your car is petrol or diesal we might be able to give you a clue how much its gonna cost you....

If your car is in reasonable condition , and you don,t put your foot down too much , you should get between 25 and 30 miles to the gallon on a long run....

I don,t know what the fuel prices are at your end , and i am no good at maths either , but if you work out how many miles it is , and work it out at 25 miles to the gallon you should be able to have some idea how much its going to cost you....

There is some great maps on the net...the one i use is Bing maps , you put in your location , and your destination , and it gives you the best route , and tells you how many miles it is....also how long it takes... according to them its 715 miles from Rotterdam to Starogard Gdanski.. 1153 kms.. and takes around 13 hours....

Also on the net is a list of fuel prices in all the countries you will pass through...just type in fuel prices...you will find it....

She is quite safe...i have plenty of beans , so i am not hungry...!

And...even when i am hungry i have never been known to eat a whole person....!

I did Poznan to the UK last week in a bmw 320i (petrol) stuck to about 100 mph and used 120 litres to cornwall.

Mine isnt the most frugal of things either, Budget for about 200 GBP and you won't go far wrong.

watch out for pot holes on single laned roads and beware of cars overtaking in the opposite direction, best thing to do when starting out is stay behind a truck or a bus, that way if some nutter is overtaking they'll hit them first.

that would most likely be Wroclaw Boy behind the wheel...

But WB is a skilled driver, unlike the rest of the lot in PL....
