Crossing The Poland-Lithuania Border: Suwałki to Kaunas

Suwałki is 30 km away from the Lithuanian border. I can see that the train is out to Lithuania due to some reconstruction to upgrade the line. I can also see exactly on bus a day online. Due to the lack of federalism, crossing national borders in the EU depending on public transportation tends to be a problem due to restricted schedules, etc. Frequently I just get to the last train station in one country then cross the border on foot or by bus before continuing by train. Can someone please advise on the best way to get to Kaunas?

Not many options, unfortunately, as there is nothing at the road border crossing left except for a dingy shop, and the rail line you mention hasn't been even started on the other side.

It's a shame there isn't any better and more frequent direct service as that's the nearest airport only 140km away - so much closer than Warsaw.

There will be some local minibuses making the trip to at least Marijampole, but they probably aren't advertised anywhere online.

Wow, has even the terrible bar gone from there?

I spent an interesting hour at the old Polish border crossing 10 years ago in the middle of the night when it was snowing.

There is a bus that goes from Gdansk to Kaunas/Vilnius. I know it stops near there.

I can understand why the 1.50 am to 5.00 am bus might not be too appealing, but there are daytime ones too.
Just pick a day when there are more options. I can't think how else you can get there unless you want to get a taxi, which will be much more expensive.
