hey guys, My wife and I live in New York, she needs to go back to Poland sometime later July early August, and return a month later. I remember fares to Poland being pretty cheap, but when we go on expedia nowadays they're all $1000+?? (roundtrip). Are there any tricks to getting cheap flights? Or have the prices just gone up?

In general you need to book your tickets 2+ months ahead of your trip to have any major savings. Summer and Christmas time are usually most expensive.

I think kayak.com has the best fares, not always but most of the time. Also orbitz.com and travelocity.com have good deals. If you're an avid traveler you might try to fly to Stansted and use a low cost carrier like wizzair or ryan to fly to Poland. If you do, I suggest you ship most of your bags before your trip (post office, ups, fedex, etc). Pain in the butt to keep dragging several bags while switching airlines and terminals. Plus the many bag fees will increase your ticket prices more than you think.

Bon voyage

My round-trip in August from LAX to Warsaw (with transfer) is costing me over $1,300.00. Good lord thats a lot of money! Should be worth every penny though. I'll have the opportunity to get to know relatives, I've never met before.

Go to Western Europe and get a seperate flight from there. It's extremely cheap. Prices vary but it can sometimes be as cheap as 50-60 USD.

It can cost the equivalent of $300 USD to travel 200 miles by train in the UK, so you could say it's exceptional value ;)

Unless...

... you get there and you don't get on ;)

Good idea. From WE you can get much better deals if you look around for a while.

Try lot.com, they often have promotions for NY-Wawa round trips. I saw one recently for about 800USD. Depends on time of year too (and other factors).

I always use lot to find tickets. The key is to look often and from different internet connections (different times of day, days of the week etc.). Prices can sometimes vary as much as 100-200USD just by searching for the same flight using a different internet connection (work, neighbour, etc.). i think airline websites keep track of activity.

edit: just did a quick search, i found a round trip: NY - PL for $628 USD (incl. taxes/fares).

Yeah, ten years ago, I flew round trip from Newark to Warsaw for about $700. This time, I flew from Myrtle Beach, to Charlotte, NC, to JFK in New York and then LOT and I paid $1,500 round trip even booking in advance.

But it was worth every penny. I had the best trip ever. Found where my grandmother's farm was before she emigrated to the USA and met distant relatives. Visited all the villages I've learned about through my genealogy, and went to the archives to get more birth, marriages and death certificates.

Even did a tomb etching to bring home a grave marker of a great great Uncle. Met wonderful people, full of hospitality and came home so very happy.
