Getting from Krakow to Warsaw

Ok folks, thanks again.

By the way I have to go from Warszawa Centralna because I'm meeting a friend at that station and we are both travelling to Krakow from there.

You could get a taxi to Warsaw Station to be safe. The main risk is a flight delay, however these are mostly rare. If you're out of the airport hall in time for that 175 bus at 33 past the hour you'll be fine. If by a miracle you're out in time for the 15 past bus, you'll be laughing.

Good luck.

So maybe your friend could buy a train ticket for you at the ticket window at the station earlier? Then, unlike in case of buying it online, there is no problem with changing the train for which the ticket is sold, even when you are already on the train (I am not sure how it is with EIP, then it's better to do it at the ticket office).

If you have to go through Warszawa Centralna then you would have to choose such a connection:

(Warszawa Śródmieście /Warsaw Downtown/ is almost the same station as Warszawa Centralna, they are connected via an underground tunnel)

But in such a situation there is virtually no difference between the train from the airport and the bus 175, the bus is even better in that the bus stop is much closer to the exit from the terminal than the train station.

Maybe you could rearrange the meeting with your friend so that he would wait for you at Warszawa Zachodnia? It's smaller, so it would be easier to find each other, and it is very simple to get from Warszawa Centralna to Warszawa Zachodnia.

There are machines now at the station and no queues for them at that time of day - should be quick.

Confusing for a stranger to Warsaw, and annoying for someone with luggage. There are 2 flights of stairs, then a long platform, then up a moving ramp that is not switched on. Then you're only actually in the Galeria Wschodniowa. It's actually quite a walk.

Yes - in fact (much as I hate them) the airport bus is almost always better, except in the rush hour when ul. Zi W gets jammed or if you're going to Zachodnia,

A good idea, however it isn't that small so they'd have to agree to meet on a particular platform.

It depends on from where are you coming, but if from Schengen area, then there is no passport control, so it's faster.

LTN - WAW so it's the barrier and maybe the queue. A lot depends on what other flights have come in just before. This can cause problems. Not just the queues but also a longer wait for luggage. For a 1750 arrival it isn't too bad at all - no other non-Schengen just before, and a couple of Schengen flights in the previous few minutes. Businessy ones so probably not too much luggage.

If there's no flight delay and not too much mucking about with remote stands, he should have plenty of time to get the 175 bus and make it to the TLK Krakow train with 15 minutes to spare.

Let us know if you get to Krakow on time and OK.

Hi folks

I just got back from Krakow. It was great. Beautiful city. So much to see.

As far as my journey goes, the plane landed 10 minutes early, at about 17 40, so I had problem getting the 18 15 bus from the airport to Warszawa Centralna. Once there I was trying to get a ticket from the machine but there were no reserved places left and the machine said you can still get an unreserved place from the window. I stood in line for almost half an hour and it was clear I was not going to make it to the window to buy tickets for my friend and myself so with just over 5 minutes to go before the 19 15 train was to leave, we ran to the platform and just got on. No seats left of course and the corridors full of people standing. Thankfully we found a little space somewhere and sat on our bags, but it was not a great journey. We paid for the tickets on the train. They were 10 zloty more each, due to some conductor's charge [at least that is what the receipt said].

We got to Krakow at 22 02.

IC and TLK trains are cheaper, but most of the connections between Warsaw and Cracow are the more expensive EIC and EIP.

The tickets are the cheaper, the earlier you buy them. They are to buy online on intercity.pl
Train connections search - rozklad.sitkol.pl

If you change between two trains in the middle of the route, it counts as a single connection and you get a single ticket (cheaper than 2 separate ones), but not if you buy the ticket online. So try to find a direct connection.

The tickets are sold not earlier than a month in advance.

This is true, however I'd add that due to dynamic ticketing systems online, even the EIP can be cheaper than the TLK. Also worth checking out both first and second class prices - sometimes the difference in price is tiny and I've even seen first class cheaper than second sometimes.
