it's a super tall block of apartments

where is it?

it's in exactly the same place as Poltegor. at least where Poltegor once stood.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poltegor_Centre

the wiki text mentions both buildings and who is paying for it etc.

one can also see it from Plac Bema, which is the other side of the river.

if u are looking for something that shows the future of wroclaw then sky tower would be a good example.

there is also Odra Tower, which is closer to rynek, but not as tall.

So what is the best place in the rynek to enjoy a beer on a Sunday afternoon, and what qualities make it the best?

I would expect that the food be decent as well...

i don't drink much, but when i want a quiet pint i go to the british pub.

to give u an idea of what it's like..... most people don't go there.

BTW. check the weather forecast. it's very overcast here at the moment with a threat of rain. it is quite warm though.

convex might be best qualified to answer your question.

What's the forecast for next Sunday? :-)

partly cloudy. with rain on monday

if the weather stays the same you'll get bright mornings, dull afternoons and maybe rain in the evening.

despite the forecast i'd say the weather is getting better.

one of the attractions might be the river in flood. one or two little villages out of town are suffering a bit.
the river, in the centre of town, is up about a metre and running fast.

u won't have any problems. when the water rises in some areas it becomes white water and makes for something a little different.

don't panic. the river is up a bit and i'm using a bit of dramatic licence.

Is there one best vantage point to see the white waters?

So what is the best place in the rynek to enjoy a beer on a Sunday afternoon, and what qualities make it the best?

I know you asked about Rynek, but you know, Rynek is for tourists...
If you are looking for good selection of Polish beers and some Czech beers try pubs near "nasyp kolejowy" = embankment of rail. It is not grand place but there is a collection of cosy pubs there, for example this one with Czech beer:

wroclaw.tubywam.pl/czeski-raj

Those are mostly pubs so decent food is harder to get but regular stomach can handle food from this place:

wroclaw.tubywam.pl/kuznia-dobrych-klimatow

As I said, it is not grand area (it is planned to became a pedestrian zone in a few years though), there is a construction site of a theater next to it, but it is quite close to the Rynek and somewhat "off the bitean track" place.

One more thing, trains are running under your head there, but this is kind of special feature of the place ;)

Well the weather wasn't very cooperative when we were there. It was rainy, so we sought indoor activities. I really wanted to see the Panorama Raclawska. The first few shots are around and inside the actual building that houses the painting.

They had a diorama to depict the lay of the land to review, along with costumes and models depicting the dress of the day in a room off to the side of the entrance.

The entrance way led up a winding path (accessible to wheel chairs) and you came up in the middle of the painting. At the top of the ramp, a guide would provide a device that would translate the descriptive dialogue explaining the meaning and significance of the important bits of the painting. It was available in a plethora of languages.

The painting was really something to behold. Full Circle, 15m (?) high, very detailed. At the bottom of the painting, they transitioned into real dirt / trees / debris etc laying on the floor. There were only a few points where you could see the transition from reality to painting. Exceptionally well done! With the ticket, you also got admission to the national museum, basically across the road. We unfortunately did not have time to take in the museum.

The Panorama was where we spotted our first gnome. We saw a few others about the rynek. We went for a walk to the galleria mall, to do a little shopping for stuff we forgot to bring along on the trip. It was a modern mall, which had a kebab shop! We elected for the ice cream and coffee, as my youngest daughter and I share a sweet tooth, and I a need for caffeine.

Walking about the center, you couldn't help but notice the difference in architectural styles - The Old and the Beautiful, and The Old and Not-So-Beautiful.

The entrance to the rynek (at least the one we went through was under construction, but when you got there, it was apparent that it was a beautiful one.

The family was a bit peckish by this time, so we noticed a McDonalds (which has notoriously clean washrooms, I might add) and we noticed these two youngsters handing out flyers, about the upcoming Warsaw (not Wroclaw) Rising. We wandered around a bit after our gastronomic / anatomical delights, and found they were doing a wee re-enactment of some fighting in the town square. In the midst of it all were some more gnomes!

In this one you will notice a large screen... the night before, they were showing a movie (in English, Polish sub-titles) in one section of the rynek.

I found out how southern knows so much about Poland. He owns a restaurant in the Rynek!

We ran into this street performer, and he accosted (in a friendly way) our youngest, and we all had a great laugh at his antics.... Talented guy!

Earlier, Pawian (I think) was mentioning about the advertisements. This huge ad was (I think) covering up some on-going renovations.

And finally, I thought this was an interesting perspective, the old reflected in the new...

We spent only a day and a half in Wroclaw. Another day would have been nice, but the weather was so crappy, we wanted to move on south. As was pointed out earlier in the thread, there is a lot of graffiti in Wroclaw.

We had a funny story about some taxi drivers who tried to rip us off getting back from the rynek the first night, but maybe I will save it for another time....
