Attractions in Wrocław: a Must-See List

Well, basically the entire inventory of the pre-war museums. Altars, epitaphs, paintings, armory, goldworks and so on. It was all moved to Warsaw after the war and is still stored there.

I know the History Museum. It is very well done, but it can't hide the fact that the exhibits are mostly second rate. The good stuff is in Warsaw. The National Museum in Warsaw for instance shows the biggest collection of Silesian paintings today, which were all in Breslau before '45.

Ah, I remember now. We saw some stuff like that in Warsaw, indeed.

It is understandable. Warsaw was razed to the ground and lost nearly everything, while Wrocław had to be punished for being a German city. :):):)

Here or there, whatever. As you can see, people who want to visit a museum do it both in Wrocław and Warsaw. Poland isn`t such a big country that travelling poses a problem.

I will be traveling to Wroclaw, in about 10 days for two days, one night, any advise on a decent boutique Hotel ( good price, good location, with parking)

Back in the day (mid-80's) I used to cross the border at Zgorzelec. It was an experience unlike any other border town- all positive!

They were actually moved to Warsaw to polonize Wroclaw, and most exhibits aren't shown in Warsaw today but are stored in magazines. There is a movement in Wroclaw to bring back the artworks, but the responsible authorities in Warsaw block every progress.

This was the main reason why Wroclaw was such a strange experience for me.

Great pics Pawian! I can't beleive how clean and bright the buildings on the Rynek are. In my day they were dirty and grey.

they were cleaned up for the Popes visit in 1997. all the paint and colours have to be approved. they are very strict in that part of town.

Yes, the Market Square houses are fantastic.

It's definitely not the biggest, although possibly now the best in Poland.
The veending machines sell what's safe for the animals. Feeding them anything else is harmful for them and, quite rightfully, forbidden.
Seals feeding is great.

Which one is the biggest, in your opinion, then? If you mean the size, OK, the new one in Poznań is the biggest. You have to walk miles to see an animal or two.

But if we mean the number of species, Wrocław is ahead of all others. I had never seen so many species of reptiles (my hobby) in a zoo in Poland.

Of course I meant size-wise. The biggest is actually the one in Gdansk, then Poznan Nowe Zoo.
Wrocław had 4533 animal specimen in 833 species at the end of 2010
Wrocław has more species then the other zoos in Poland - at least so says the data I found (from 2009).
Wrocław - 813
Warszawa - 547
Poznań (both zoos) - 421

Altogether there are 20 zoos in Poland nowadays. I didn`t know there are so many.

whoever dreamt up wroclove is a complete idiot in my opinion.

it comes out as rocklove and means absolutely nothing.

as wroclaw is pronounced rocklaw in english.

I have not seen anything about Wroclove. The point was that Wrocław is unpronounceable by foreigners as seen written and often written Wroctaw. Vrotzlove comes close to true pronunciation. Being from £orsoł I could care less though.

But definatly looks worth a weekend visit, the Kossak panorama will be on my To Do list for sure,about 15 years ago I found a Polish book on his life and work on an english flea market and have been a fan since,my biggest thrill about getting behind the scenes in a certain museum in warsaw was finding a huge kossak battle painting hanging in a stair way :)

the answer is: nothing

it was a piece of semi-neglected parkland. but very popular for kids as they didn't have to cross a main road to play.

it was also closed off for a year or two when they built some apartment blocks nearby.

the building might look nice, but locals fought against its construction. and though it's been completed for a few years it's still half empty. it also blocks my view of the catherdral towers.

i like it, but it's in the wrong part of town.

Is there weekly ticket to ride the bus/tram in Wroclaw? If so, what is it called in Polish, where do I buy one and how much does it cost?

u can get them from ticket machines near some tram stops. the machines have a language option. the machines take cash or cards.

Not everything is as it seems, but they are in Wroclaw.

it's a super tall block of apartments. although the height was reduced because of investment problems.
