Working in Walbrzych - studying&meeting Polish?

Hello PF members! ^^

I'm a foreigner going to Walbryzch to work for an international company on may.
I can speak fluent English/Japanese/Korean but can barely speak any Polish.
But I wanna learn the language, I really like poland and polish ppl/culture.

Where could I study Polish at a reasonable rate within Walbryzch?
And where could I meet local polish ppl and make some friends?
Also I think polish girls are the hottest.. I wonder if there are places to meet them preferably within Walbryzch? (like clubs and etc...)

Since I've heard that Walbryzch isn't exactly the largest town in Poland. I would assume Warsaw/Krakow/Wroclaw would provide better opportunities.
But I would love to know if there are good pubs/bars/clubs or places to have fun and meet many ppl?

Please help, it will be one of the best moments of my life staying in Poland, and I would like to make the best of it.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Toronto, I'd first off try learning a least rudimentary Polish prior to going over. Suppose the easiest would be to find a local Polish course in Toronto and then continue when you're in Wałbrzych! Will your company offer language classes for foreign employees?

Wishing you lots of success. If you've already mastered those other languages, Polish grammar won't come as a complete shock (..perhaps only a slight jolt) LOL

Most Poles don't really know English like Northern Europeans, so learning Polish is a solid good idea.

Not many mate, but im sure you'll find something.

Will there be many other Asians working at the same company?

It's certainly a good idea to learn some rudimentary grammar before going.
I've thought of it too and purchased a basic grammar book last week. (just started...Dzien Dobry! lol)

My company will not provide any language classes...at least I've heard nothing like that being provided...
I will be on my own to learn the language unless fellow polish employees are willing to help me. (which I'm obviously gonna try)

Wroclaw boy...

Thanks for your reply...although I didnt really get what you mean.
what is it a crap that I go to Walbryzch to work?

There will be some asians in my office.
Although I'm not 100% sure...there will be like 4-5 japanese, 1 korean 20~30 polish

I dont know what you are used to but Walbrzych is one of the most ugly, depressing cities i have ever visited, thats what i meant.

Hopefully that will take care of your social concerns then, maybe even a nice girl or two among the 20-30 Polish.

As someone who only knows Szczecin and has never even been to Wałbrzych, just curious as to why an international concern would choose to locate in such a backwater rather than Warszawa? It must be a question of cost, that's all.

Man, tell me in more details how its ugly and depressing... (T_T) I wanna know what's the standard for being ugly/depressing...
I don't need a whole town to be full of history with buildings that are all historic and stuff...I've lived in cities like Toronto/Tokyo/Seoul and they are all modern and not so "Historic not Beautiful"

Yeah, but I don't like to ask a fellow employee out. Especially when it comes to dating a female.
I've had an experience goiong out with a female employee in my past company. And it was a nightmare once you break up.
c'mon you have to see her everyday u know how pain in the ass it is!!

Thanks for your reply.

I've always wanted to go live in Europe. And I've chosen Poland because I have a very good image of Poland.
I didn't know anything about Walbryzch...I just loved the fact that I can go live in Poland.
Also, due to the nature of my job, I will be travelling quite a bit to nearby countries like Czech/Slovak....and maybe hungary once or twice a year.

I was offered a pretty good deal I think...

Offered: 8000 Zloty (Gross)/ month
a job that requires all three languages I have (Eng/Jap/Kor)

Lyzko...

I didn't have other offers at that time...and I thought this offer was a very good match for myself.
Didn't really think about the city that I will be living in...and by now, i'm startin to be concerned about how my life after work.

depends on the individual

perhaps Seoul has some impressive slums, not so sure about Tokyo so maybe you have experience of that in which case Walbrzych may seem like a sprawling metropolis to you. You will basically see lots of crumbling buildings, lots of roads in dire need of resurfacing, depressed rude people will be a daily occurrence.

In winter its especially depressing I can remember being down there walking around on dirty ice about 3 inches thick, traffics also a big issue - theres basically one main road in and out and its always congested with lots of bottlenecks.

Check out Google Earth theres plenty of pics to give you an idea, no street view as yet though.
