Tips/advice for an Erasmus student in Lodz

Hi everybody.
I`m Bogdan and I am a Erasmus Exchange student ...I`m coming to Poland (town of Lodz), for the first time in my life... and I need as much info about town, prices,dorms, places to visit (museums, pubs and all other exciting places near Lodz).

Also I would like to get some information about University of Lodz and all other things that you may consider interesting for me to visit.

Merged: Erasmus in £odź - how much money for 4-5 months?

Hi.
Im from Portugal and Im thinking on taking 2nd semester in £odź.
I would like to know how much money do I need to live for 4 or 5 months.
I can share the bills with a friend also.
I was thinking 300€ = 1200zly more or less per month with shared expenses to be the minimum for living.

What do you think? Is it enough?

Should be enough if you're going to rent a room, not apartment.

Only cappuccino, oranges and wine is cheaper in Lisbon.

When would be arriving in Lodz and which university?

Not enough. Lodz is cheap, but still.
You can rent a room (shared even) but will still cost you around 300ZL.
So now you are down to 900ZL for living the rest of the month + a phone bill probably + transportation etc.

Consider going there with a budget of 2000ZL pr. month, and if you spent less, great.
You might also want to travel around Poland a little, and with a budget of 1200ZL pr. month, that will be very tough..

Prepaid in Play mobile 20zł per month, transportation = 2nd hand bike for one time 200zł, self cooking for 500zł per month and it's doable.

For accommodation including bills I think you should allow 5/600pln per month if sharing an apartment. Service charges (including a hot/cold water allowance can be 1/3 extra on basic rent). Then Gas, elec, internet/tv will be on top again.

1200pln per month seems extremely tight to me.

I would arrive in February and Im going to the International Faculty of Engineering at Lodz University of Technology.

The faculty has shared room for 400zl per month. With shared kitchen. I only need to pay for wifi access.

Sounds like an ok price to me. But I'm still on my way to Lodz, so I actually don't know if it is really good or not...

Ok, let's face it - Erasmus is one big party so 400zl per month for rent is a good start. It depends on how much you are going to go pubbing/clubbing etc. but seeing as you're Portuguese, you won't need to spend a lot to get drunk ;)

(Although I'm not an Erasmus student!) I spend around 2000zl per month: 600zl for rent and the rest is basically food and drink - mainly booze. I go out three times a week on average (pubs and/or clubs) but probably spend too much drinking more expensive beers (i.e. foreign) as Polish beer has begun to wear me down! If you decide to go out to drink alcohol, Pijalnia is a favourite amongst students as every drink is 4zl.

Regarding phones, I use T-Mobile and for 5zl, I get 5 days' worth of free texts which is all you need. That being said, Play is probably better but I'm too lazy to change my number. Just make sure your phone is unlocked.

Basic advice: Shop at Biedronka, eat in Milk Bars (Bar Mleczny) and buy whatever beer is on promotion in Zabka - usually 4 Harnas for 8,99zl.

All things considered and having lived with volunteers (who were on a pittance) for 9 months,1200zl should be enough. You won't exactly have a great standard of life but you'll have enough to live like a typical student in that you'll have enough cash to get drunk and life off of instant noodles.
