Portugese erasmus student moving To Poznan. Job, rent, language?

Hey there,

Some of my friends are going to study in Poznan next year as Erasmus students and I'm planning on moving too. I'm 20, Portuguese and fluent in English and Spanish, both written and spoken form. I can also understand French but can't write nor speak it.

How much of a hard time will I have finding a job that pays the rent plus all the basic stuff (food, bills, internet and all that)? My only working experience was as a waiter in my parents' coffee shop and some months as a drawing tutor preparing high school students for the national exams. I only have high-school level education and don't mind handing out leaflets, working at kebab shops and that kind of stuff.

Also don't mind spending this summer trying to learn as many polish as I can, but I know it's a tough language (scared the hell out of me trying to read stuff in the Polish embassy). I play online poker semi-professionally and currently make around 15€-20€ an hour not counting with tournament winnings, so that's a bonus...maybe enough?

Thanks in advance

I thought that poker is gambling, so one cannot say that he makes something per hour. But if you can, then stay with Poker you will get much more than when working in Poland. In Poland minimum salary is 1.45eur/h net. Median 2.9eur/h net. Without the language you will be lucky finding the job paying minimum, except if you want to do hard job, like help on farm in construction, cleaning. But I don't know how realistic is to find such job here without the language. You should check outsourcing companies in PoznaƄ, sometimes they need Portuguese or Spanish for their call centers. There you could earn more than average. Unfortunately this languages are not the most wanted.

But if you want to study in the same time, then most of options are out. Tutoring Spanish and Portuguese could be an option for you. Prices start from not taxed 5eur/h. To be successful in that you need to advertise a lot.

Thanks, I'll have it in consideration. Yeah poker is gambling but one can have an advantage by knowing probability and poker theory. I also make that amount per day (not hour). I initially wrote my per hour earnings but then changed it to facilitate calculations, sorry about that. If I made 20€/hour I'd be the happiest man alive lol.

I guess I'll go as a tourist then for the first 2 weeks or so to evaluate my options and then make a decision based on that.

It won't pay the bills in Poznan. I can speak from first hand experience - no-one is interested in young Portuguese/Spanish/Italian speakers "teaching" because they usually don't have much of an education, nor do they have any ability to actually teach. The going rate for such a person is as low as 20zl an hour - and everyone knows it. There's far too much of a supply on the market and little in the way of demand - Spanish is fashionable, but no-one is going to pay big bucks for it.

But I don't know how realistic is to find such job here without the language.

It is possible - there's one kebab shop in Poznan that seems to only employ foreigners.

There are other alternatives, such as finding work with a company that wants to move into the Spanish/Portuguese markets. But no-one is going to be interested in working with such a young person - especially in an ageist society like Poland.

Very. The best hope you have is call centres, but it's hard hard work for low pay.

Agree with the others that the only work you are likely to find is in a call center, and with your level of education and lack of experience, it's likely to be sales-related cold-calling, the worst kind of call-center work available for the lowest pay. Lousy job for barely enough to survive on, if you live like a monk and count every penny. Handing out leaflets isn't an option, as you will never make enough to survive. Teaching in a language school is flat out, and tutoring will only bring in a small amount of money, if you find anyone to tutor at all.

The question is why aren't you getting an education yourself? That should be your highest priority right now. Your future is bleak without salable qualifications.

I am getting college level but can only finish next May I think, so I'll have a year with almost nothing to do and traveling seemed like an option (to meet other cultures and all that) since the farthest I've been was borderline with Spain. I'll probably travel as a tourist first for 2 week-1 month and then see. Thanks.

I'd stay at home and study my butt off for those college levels so that I can get into the best school possible. Perhaps help out at your parents cafe and save up a little money, which you won't be able to do in Poland. Nothing wrong with visiting your friends there for a week or two, but spending a year there is a bit unrealistic.

You have no chance of getting a job if you don't have an EU passport or a very specialised skill to offer.
