Ethics of teachers dating students in Poland

Ethical Dilemma
3 Mar 2017 /  #1
Just wondering if it is considered ethical for teachers to date students in Poland. I heard that during communist times university profs would offer girls high marks for sex. Is it still going on? What do people in Poland think about a teacher being in a relationship with a student?

It does happens in Poland; for some reason it's actually acceptable in Polish culture :|

Used to be a dime a dozen of 'em back when I went to college! At least in most of the States, this practice has all but been discontinued, and high time, I should say:-)

Agreed. When I was at university a student (from I think Italy or Malta) didn't get the class of degree she wanted and tried to say she'd refused a lecturers advances. It didn't work, since the lecturer in question was very far from being heterosexual. Maybe some do it, and shouldn't - it's a form of abuse.

If of course all parties are of age and the lecturer/trainer/teacher in question has nothing to do with giving grades that contribute towards a final assessment it's a different mattter. When I first came to Poland and worked in in-company training there was a rule in the place I worked: 'no flirting unless appropriate'. Some very happy marriages resulted.

However one plucky co-ed where I was, got back at the prof but GOOD! When he chided her in our world lit. class for not participating in the reading discussion, Missy shot back softly "My, we weren't so rough last night!" Everyone broke up.

:-)))

Does that mean you got "A" jon ?

"My, we weren't so rough last night!"

I would have looked right in her eyes and said, "Tonight is the night for that, get some rest."
Then given her a little wink.
You can bet that it happens in every University around the world, including Poland.

...and in the '70's, even more so, believe me:-)

You don't have to try to convince me.
I was dating a cheerleader at the University that I attended in the 70's.
She thought it was hilarious that all she had to do is bang her instructor one time to get an "A".
By the time a girl attends a College or University she is very well aware that she is sitting on a gold mine.
Why would Poland's Universities be any different ?

Don't be silly, some of us have a higher moral compass than someone who would even think of things like that. As you thought of that. Though yes, I got the best grade (and not in the subject that the good person I mentioned taught) and no, wouldn't even have thought of putting out to a lecturer, and in any case most of mine were celibate.

Why would Poland's Universities be any different ?

They're a) much more conservative b) more likely to not put up with that *****, c) most Polish professors are ugly and best avoided ... but... d) of course it still happens.

@jon
One of my Polish pen pals that is attending a university in Poland told me the same exact thing.
Polish professors demand being the unchallenged authority in a very intimidating manner. (No nonsense)
You either bow to them and agree or flunk.

@JohnnyReb, that's spot on. I'd add though that most aren't like that. Unfortunately the few that are like that make the problem and prolong the hurt. Yes some of them do behave like they're minor deities (the phrase 'renowned Polish professor' is often bullsh1t) and there are a lot of problems in universities here. The faculty also often get extra wages for doing admin roles which are actually performed by real admin staff on much less money

Well according to this guy 14 years ago, who claimed he had no choice but to teach a class with his mistress as one of his students, inappropriate relationships between instructors and students were accepted. Of course, he was a known disrupter who was subsequently banned, and nothing that he said could be believed. He just liked to still things up to see what reaction he might get.

Poland surely has no monopoly on smug profs who think they're G_d and that their word's Gospel aka "My way or the highway!"

In Germany, at least when I was a student, little to any leniency would typically be shown deviant opinions, especially for foreign students:-)
Once the lecture began (preceded as was the custom then, by thunderous rapping on the desks from the whole class - quite a racketLOL), Herr Professor became demi-G_d pedagoge, and woe betide the wayward student who ran afoul of his Excellency.

Female students certainly acted on crushes, much as here, much as in Poland......much as everywhere.
