American Muslim girl thinking to go to Medical school in Poland...

Hey, everyone.

Hi. At my med school (not Lodz) we have a few african americans and more than a few muslims. We get along and there's no discrimination from the teachers or society that I have seen. There are few blacks living here so maybe you'll stick out a bit if alone but in my opinion you should not let that hinder you: you will, anyway, spend 95% of your time at school / library / with your classmates.

American kids go to medical school overseas because they can't get into med school in the states because it is so competitive. 10 - 20 applicants for every seat.

Babushka, used to be what Polish American women in Chicago would call a head scarf that they used to wear.

hi,
i saw a lot of students from abroad (mean from asia and so called blacks) studying on silesian medical university, and they seems to be quite pleased - no bruising, without bandages on their heads, no broken noses, with no security guards...

to be honest - there might be a problem with your muslim clothes, but not with color of your skin.

reg,
stalin.

You don't study on a university, you study at a university.

There are many sorts that study Medicine so it's already quite a mix.

Hey, everyone.

I am considering going to med school in Poland, and I just wanted to know what I should expect. I heard that there are many skinhead bigots there. Is that really true? Should I be worried? Thanks

Olsztyn medical school is starting a course with a large number of saudi Arabian students in 2011.

Much less than if you were a Christian, or Muslim for that matter, wearing any religious symbols in Saudi Arabia.

I visited Lodz recently with my wife who wears abaya and hijab. She is black British Muslim.
We visited a friend who has been studying at Medical university of Lodz for the last 6 years.
We did see a number of ladies wearing abayas and hijabs at the university.I also noticed that the international students dean looks after foreign students very well.

Along the streets alot of people did stop and stare at my wife some would just stop and look.
Maybe someone of the people have never seen anyone dressed like that before.
we just went about with our business and just ignored the stares.
In the shops and restaurant everyone was friendly.
There is also a very strong Muslim community at the university. They have a prayer room though no mosque in Lodz yet.
if you are a foodie like me there is limited Halal food choices although i must point out the polish people are very good with pastry you will get the best pancakes, cakes and biscuits.

Of course you can stick to veggie and seafood.
In terms of quality i think the medical uni is one of the best around - i know a few people from East Africa who have graduated.

just my thoughts

Translation: Because all religion is a myth unless its my religion plus im a racist based on my experiences of living in America, where poor people tend to be of colour. But im too stupid to understand the true reason, so i'll just hate blacks and knock racial integration at every opportunity .......... behind the security of my computer screen of course.

But im too stupid to understand the true reason,

Please by all means "enlighten" me to the true reason blacks commit so much crime.

Why? There are Polish Muslims too, you know.

Then again, you probably don't know - Babcia hates blacks, after all.

poverty, rich people steal for fun.

It's genetics not poverty. I can walk through the poorest US trailer park at 2 am and be fine. Where I live in Poland people live on 400 zloty a month and I leave my car unlocked with no issues. Can you do that in Detroit or St. Louis?

Why? There are Polish Muslims too, you know

Poland is not a muslim country.

Ah, a true village boy.

Poland is not a muslim country.

Neither is it a Christian country.

Read the Constitution recently?

Neither is it a Christian country.

88% of Poles are Roman Catholic. That is not even including other Christian sects like Eastern Catholics or Polish Orthodox.

Doesn't make it a Roman Catholic country. The Constitution makes that clear. I mean, such a nationalist patriot such as yourself has read it, right?

So just because there is separation of church and state that means it is ok for nonwhite muslims to displace Poles in their country?

Krakow Wroclaw and Warsaw is a large multicultural city-There will be ok for you
In krakow is exams for the medical study
In Warszawa end Wrocław and Białystok - no exam Recruitment is just talk
Białystok- is a smaller city-There you have problems that you speak
Medical schools in Poland are very good.
Studies in Poland for arabian girl in Kraków , Wrocław ,Warszawa is a good choice.
Good luck :-)

@ Nacjonalista, you're right, but good luck teaching delphaindomine realism, i discussed with him before and he is not exactly willing to give up his socialist dreams about all cultures and all groups of people being "equal". ;)

ontopic:countries that once warmly welcomed the first few "pioneers" of some cultural/religious/ethnic group were soon overrun by thousands of members of those groups.

so to Polish people welcoming muslim students to their country i would say: uwaga!

I agree with Aniapinki, in Bialystok there may be problems - it's a bit isolated in some ways, but the other cities are fine. I'd add Gdańsk and Poznań to the list too - quite cosmopolitan.

Medical education and approach to treating patients is stuck in the '50's understanding of medical science in Polish medical fields - so hardly any point going there for any uptodate education - if you just need to qualify as a middling and a very ordinary average GP go ahead. As for racism - its rife in most places. They might leave you alone in down town Warszawa, though, don't bet on it - but out in sticks - watch out. There is, by the way a black Member of Parliament from Lodz (!) - but I'm afraid he is an Uncle Tom - you can always look him up - Godsons the name. And another Black posel from Poznan - they both are treated as Poland 'tokens' to posing as a 'free and a forward looking country'. Other right wing party leaders in the Parliament seem to have no problem being openly racist to Godson - calling him a 'murzynek'.... A medical student and a murzynek too ?? You will find it unwelcome. Having said this, for every right wing xenophobic Pole, you will find loads and loads of good, pleasant and educated people, with tolerance for muslims / black / jews - but they have all left Poland and can be found in UK, France etc, etc

Your view of the Polish medicine is clearly skewed, it is not truth that it's stuck in the '50's

Actually based on visits to two dentists and two GP's in the last eight months... and as for education - its from the most recent Educational Surveys run by the Ministry of Higher Education - also, see several devastating articles from young researchers, published in the mainstream Polish press. By the way, a close relative works in Medical Academy in Warsaw.
