Gdańsk - Safe and decent residential areas?

I'm going to be in Gdańsk next week and want to do some flat hunting (for rental). The prospect is a bit daunting at the moment - I don't really know where to start.

What are generally considered the best areas to live in, with regards to the usual things like amenities, transport links, safety etc? Because the Tricity area is long and thin,

I suspect this may be an easier decision to get wrong than in more conventionally shaped towns! Thanks in advance for any advice.

I loved living in Gdansk Old Town.

One thing to take into account is where you will be working: transport in Tri-city can be problematic due to the shape of the place.

I would love to live in the old town, but is it not really expensive? My budget is about 1500 zł pcm.

The Old Town in Gdansk is great. I've been living here for 4 1/2 years. You can find a flat here for 1500 or maybe a little less. My first flat was a one room 30m place across the street from Madison. I paid 1000zl plus utilities and and internet. I currently live in a two room 50m place for 1300 plus utilities and internet.

I have friends who live in Oliwa, Przymorze, Zaspa, Wrzeszcz and Chelm. They're all nice areas with bus, tram or SKM connections to the city center (Old Town) so a lot depends on where you'll be working and how important it is to you to be close to the heart of the city.

Another friend told me today that he had found a one room flat near Madison for 1300zl plus the usual.

It really depends on where you're going and at what time of day.
When I worked in Wrzeszcz I heard complaints from a colleague about coming from Zaspa by public transport ...
Avoid anything west of the forest.

a travel nightmare if you try using public transport - perhaps it's different with a car - but there are certain streets that get clogged regularly on any given working day (Kartuska street for example, I think Słowackiego is quite similar in that respect)

My plan is to move here first and then look for work. I'm freelancing over the Internet at the moment so it's not critical that I find work with an employer immediately but I'd like to do so soon after I arrive to get better integrated socially.

I was on Słowackiego this morning on the bus from the airport, and it didn't seem too bad, but I could imagine it would be a lot worse during the rush hour.

I'll be moving to Gdansk for work, sometime around March 2015.

I'm looking to rent a furnished apartment close to my office at Norwida.

Please suggest safe and decent residential areas close by and let me know what the approximate cost would be (All inclusive of water bill/ electricity bill/ regular cleaning service)

The place should have easy access to public transport, gym, market area, restaurants/ pubs.

Yep - other side of Zolnierzy - closer to Gdansk. Enter ul. Topolowa.... close to the forest. You are talking 1800 zl for a 55 metre flat inclusive. DO NOT rent close to the SKM or the main road. Wrzeszcz is wuf.

I would rent Gdansk Dolne Miasto or Stogi for value.....
