Car Living in Krakow (instead of renting a flat?)

Hey, I am coming to Krakow to study for a year. Do you know anything about living in a van or camper, rather than renting a flat? I have one-year visa and American driver's license. I would love some information if you have done it or know someone who's done it.

You will need an International Driving Permit if are going to drive in PL on your US licence.

Just do it like you would in the states. When they ask you to move, move. I'm sure you can dodge the authorities for a year. Don't ask for permission, you'll never get it.

This sounds like Dante's 7th level of Hell. You know it averages in the 20's (Fahrenheit) during the winter, there, right? Sometimes it's in the negatives. And if you're thinking of washing up in a public toilet, you should know they charge you to use those. For what you'll pay in parking fees daily, you could probably swing a hostel.

If you have a Winnebago like De Niro's in Meet the Fockers you'll be pretty uncomfortable when it gets to minus 30 Celsius, as it did last winter. If you're thinking about living in an old VW camper, forget it; you'll die.

Where did it get to minus 30? Zakopane?

Kraków doesn't often get below minus 10 C. Granted that's cold if you're from the Bahamas....

Warsaw goes to minus 20 C pretty much every winter.

It got down to minus 32 in Podlasie last winter. Only for a couple of days, but a few years ago we had the worst winter for forty years. Then it was well below thirty for two weeks.

Last winter in Warsaw was the worst for a while (there were even braziers on the streets and at tram stops for a week or so).

Were they provided by the city?

^ Yep. Completely free of charge. A few enterprising souls used the things to cook sausages on and then flog to passers-by.

i'll definitely give it a go when i have the opportunity and find the right van.
