What area to live in Wroclaw? I prefer to spend about 1600-1900 per month on renting.

Hi All,

I know this has been discussed and I did find a post about this subject but it's from a few years ago and I'm sure Wroclaw has changed in that time.

If there is an up to date thread that i've missed please point me to it.

I'm moving to Wroclaw with my soon to be wife in mid October. I'm looking for some advice on where to live, what are the nice areas etc. I'm looking to spend about 1600-1900 per month on renting a place.

Preferably an area to the west of the city centre but not too far out.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm looking for some advice on where to live, what are the nice areas etc.

most people look for a place that's convenient. a 'nice' area can be near a park, shops, modern buildings etc. there are many nice areas within old parts of the city.

the area i live in is not regarded as the best part of town, but locals have access to most things, which makes it a nice place to live.

when u find a part of wroclaw or address that appeals to u let us know and i and others can give u an opinion of the area.

This map of transaction prices should help you. I know you want to rent, but people are voting with their money:

prices

In my opinion:
Biskupin|Sępolno > Krzyki > Grabiszynska...

But it all depends where are your daily destinations.

Ok thanks jwojcie

Can you tell me is there a good web site that I can look at? We have a web site call daft.ie over here in Ireland and I know there is one for Poland but it doesn't seem to be that good.

Ill be working in Strzegomska, obviously where ill be working will have an impact on my decision but I don't need to move to where I work as long as the transport will be good.

I'm looking for a nice area with shops and a park maybe that's not to far from the centre and easy to get to Strzegomska.

Good website for renting? I don't know any good site in English. Some Polish sites I look into sometimes are:
dom.gratka.pl/mieszkania-do-wynajecia/lista/dolnoslaskie,wroclaw.html
oferty.net

a few years ago the best one was (the best one because with the biggest amount of offers without a middle man): autogielda.pl

Well, after learning 10 to 50 Polish words you should be able to surf smothly on those sites ;-)

Anyway, if you are going to work on Strzegomska then from the list you gave you should go for Krzyki. I would also add Muchobór to the list - if closenest to the city center is not important to you. Regardless of the fact that brand new and shiny motorring was opened two days ago, getting from Biskupin to Strzegomska can take an hour by car sometimes.

It depends where on Strzegomska also, because it is quite a long street. If close to the center then you have direct tram from Biskupin, if on the other side, then you have relatively easy way by city bus or by car via inner ring road.

One word of warning: you should take notice on the map that middle part of Strzegomska area is kind of industrial and rail zone, so for example Grabiszyńska area can look close to it but you will have go around through the center or inner ring anyway. In fact the closest livable area is Popowice - the only minus is that this is mostly commie blocks area.

Krzyki
Sepolno
Biskupin
Grabyszinska

Krzyki and Biskupin are the nicest areas of Wrocław - very green - good communication with the rest of the city (especially Krzyki) - Grabiszyńska area is also nice the further south the nicer and also has very good communication with the centre -

oh - after reading that you will work in Strzegomska area Krzyki and Grabiszyn are your first targets to have a nice to live around

Thanks for that.
Ive just been looking at the map of Wroclaw and there seems to be 2 areas on the map that are called Krzyki, one in the south and one in the south east. Are these both the same area or two separate places altogether?

Krzyki translated into English means "screams", is there a reason its was called this?

the thing is two different level divisions of the city bear a name Krzyki - the smaller one is in the south it originally was a village which was incorporated into Wrocław - actually the name is extended now to neighboring areas like Borek

Krzyki is also a name of one of borroughs of Wrocław and Krzyki borrough encompases the whole southeasterly Wrocław - ona a Wrocław city plan both names should appear presented differently (the name of the borrough most probably in big bold letters more or less in the center of it)

I have no idea where they have taken the name from - before the end of the IIWW Wrocław was German and Krzyki was called Krietern - I don't know here whether this is any meaningful name in German or it is some old Slavic germanized name (Wrocław was called Breslau by Germans - the name was simply a germanization of the former Slavic (actually one can say Polish) name.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krzyki

edit: I have found out that Krietern means quarellers in German - so Krzyki is a variation on the German name as well as attempt to create a phonetically similar name - now a place name Krietern / quarellers still sounds pretty odd and I still think the origins of the name may originally be Slavic

btw krzyki can also mean cries (so not always screams - a better equiwalent of screams in Polish are wrzaski)

So when people say I should look at apartments in krzyki are they talking about the area in the south or south east?
Not long now until I have to move over, really looking forward to it!!

the south Krzyki a Borek area - but this is just a suggestion of a nice place to live (which is also quite subjective - I personally love the smaller Krzyki and Borek area )

the thing is you may not actually be able to find anything affordable and decent enough to rent there and you could end up looking around in other vicinities too - perhaps including the commmunist blocks for a time (if you settle for an appartment in those commie blocks (which aren't unlivable nightmare anyway) you can go for Szczepin or Gądów area which are very convenient commuting wise if you're gonna work on Strzegomska - also Nowy Dwór is an option though I don't like it personally cause it's just a big estate with hardly any green area around and it's not well connected to the city centre (no trams as far as I know only buses - it can be dreary in the winter)

Everyone always forgets about the area of Kałowice, which is one of the nicest areas in Wroclaw. It takes about 10 minutes to get to the city by tram and has a river nearby, a park and it's quiet :D

yes Karłowice is a nice place but not really convenient commuter-wise if you're gonna work in the middle of Strzegomska street (if you happen to work at this section of Strzegomska that is close to the city centre then Karłowice is an option though)

also Nowy Dwór is an option though I don't like it personally

i don't like it either. but, it might be cheaper. there is a bus (142 ?) that goes to strzegomska. and i suppose it's possible to take the train into the city.

also, it's not too bad for shopping (food items)

the thing that annoys me about the place is that it's often windy... caused by the tower blocks.

if the road is clear then the bus takes about twenty minutes to get into town.

it's a plain Wygwizdowo, isn't it - and think about winter there - been only a couple of times in winter there and it was mostly bad - but I think it's a matter of getting used to that - back in the 90's Wrocław simply ended with the last blocks of Nowy Dwór (whoever though then that Strachowice was still Wrocław?) - from what I know there is some shopping centre there now on the way to Strachowice (or even a couple of these) - I wasn't there in some 5-6 years now

if the road is clear then the bus takes about twenty minutes to get into town.

yes - but the trouble begins when there are traffic jams - I used to live in Złotniki and travel through Nowy Dwór to the Central Railway Station and sometimes it took oven an hour to get there - I don't have to mention that the Złotniki-Nowy Dwór part was not the one that had traffic jams? - it takes some 10 minutes to get from Złotniki to Nowy Dwór by bus

i never go there these days either.

That is the common misconception, I feel. I can get from home to the centre in about 15 minutes in rush hour traffic by car. A little longer by tram or bus as I have to walk to the tram/bus stops from my house. Don't disregard he area is all I am saying :D

yes - you're right - Wrocław Kuźniki station is just next to Nowy Dwór - the thing is the trains are nothing as frequent in Kuźniki as it is with the SKM in Trójmiasto/Tricity - I guess there is maximum one train per hour stopping there - I will look it up if you insist - still nothing beats trams in Wrocław in the field of communication and connectivity and reliability for the most part too - in most parts of Wrocław trams don't sit in traffic jams (Legnicka line, the line that goes to Krzyki and the Grabiszyńska line) - a couple of Trams from Gądów and general Legnicka area will take you directly into the city centre in just a quarter max (10, 22?) while the main railway station is actually a 15 minutes walk from the city centre (well the very centre, the historical one you know)

there used to be huge traffic jams in Pomorska street and vicitnity in the times I lived and studied in Wrocław - Bruecknera too - these are the two main ways from Karłowice to Strzegomska - is it any better now? - if going from Karłowice to Gądów (osiedle lotników) it is worthwhile to go round the city ringway I guess - but is it the same with Strzegomska - not the beginning section from Plac Orląt Lwowskich I guess

also I have read even here that there is so much road works going on in Wrocław now - what roads are they doing now???
