Poland already signed up for it. The time for opt-outs was a while back. That's kind of the idea behind the EU, cede an amount of sovereignty in exchange for other benefits.

Poland is in NATO no? Ok,where the fcuk are the vaunted Polish Airforce that we Brits are always being told about then? Whats the matter,Uncle Sam not paying the bill for this one so the Polish merceneries are staying at home?

As far as war situtations are concerned or how they call them nowadays 'humanitarian actions' started and covered by UN only what the US says is important. ;)

it's been confirmed that the planes in question (10 more needed on daily basis) are specifically U.S-built A-10 and AC-130 type designed for ground attack ops. I don't know if Polish air force has any of those...

well, you could have supported Poland much more in the EU than you have (I mean the UK) - we have plenty common interests - among these trying to stop Franco-German hegemony in the EU - but when there was a chance you failed to - now it's different foreign affairs philosophy among the ruling in Poland (you should have noticed the change in government already) and the current philosophy is to be as pro-German as it gets (until they screw us big time :) - so if Angela Merkel says we (Westerners) should stay away from internal Arab strife, Mr Tusk is more than happy to sound equally distanced from the trouble

Read the treaty, as BB said, which NATO member is under attack? As for civilians getting slaughtered, it's a tribal civil war.

Saved a lot of lives in Bosnia when the Serbs were slaughtering civilians. Kill the soldiers that are killing civilians is the logic behind it.

Granted maybe,but lets reduce this to human levels, NATO,essentially a bunch of mates,some closer friends than others,but when the push comes to shove mates stick together,they dont pretend to agree then once the sh!t kicks off suddenly hide behind semantics.

What on earth threat was Iraq to Britain (or the US for tha matter)? We still went in with our US allies though didnt we? So did Poland,but,as Ive heard,Poland got paid by the US to be in Iraq.....US not picking up the bill,is that the real reason behind Poland now playing the letter of the treaty game?

NATO is not an offensive treaty, never was. The command structure is just being used to manage the attack. Countries can still disagree on attacking sovereign nations. If Poland decided to bomb Bahrain or Yemen, do you think the UK would come along? Probably not as the ground attack Typhoons are already overstretched as is. Poland doesn't have the money for an offensive war...neither does the UK or the US for that matter. Why should they get involved if no NATO member was attacked?

In a way, yes. The Libya crisis is huge instability on Europe's borders. Action now is necessary in order to forestall much bigger problems later. NATO have to take the strategic long view rather than just firefighting.

Everything could potentially cause bigger problems later. NATO is a defense treaty, not a police force.
