Are Poles really that conservative? I thought PiS was bad but then I read about the positions of PO and they have outrageous views on social and ethical issues as well. Do a lot of people vote for PO simply because they are afraid to "waste" their vote for a true liberal party?
Why are PO and PiS the most popular political parties in Poland?

Are these parties part of the far right? If they are, people like them because they think it means less taxation if these party members are in control of the government.
When it comes to social/ethical issues, yeah. They are definitely far right in terms of that. Although, PO isn't far right when it comes to economic issues.

PO are not "far right" at all when it comes to social/ethical issues. They can be described as Christian Democrat - which is centre-right. There's really not much difference between them and the German CDU, for instance.

there is no 'middle' party in Poland (or if it is it's not PO but PSL) - PO simply hijacked the 'middle' because the system (thanks to the media) pushed PiS out of the middle (actually it's PiS that are christian democrats with a bit more socialist approach (and that not that much if you compare how much of a welfare state Germany is and how much Poland now) )
PO is a party of shady deal makers including the top ranks and of those who seek easy money and time (Roman Kosecki and Iwona Guzowska are serious politicians?))
the system (thanks to the media) pushed PiS out of the middle
In many ways they did that themselves when they formed a coalition with extremists and started to give press conferences to the Rydzyk organisation.
PO is a party of shady deal makers
Still the most trustworthy by far.
Because it's easy for people to have only two choices, and imagine that that there is a difference, so as to content their illusion that they're participating in democracy. PO PIS ...modern right versus traditional right,,,same as Ireland..UK...USA
It's all a show to pacify the yahoos.

The "left" faction within PO are probably the closest to a centrist party in Poland. Always wondered why Jaroslaw Kaczynski didn't continue with his centrist platform, actually.
The PSL too, these days, I think - they pretty much left peasants to PiS.
PO simply hijacked the 'middle' because the system (thanks to the media) pushed PiS out of the middle
They were never in the middle, they merely pretended to be. Their actions in Government were anything but centre - they were/are neurotically hard left and hard right at the same time.
(actually it's PiS that are christian democrats with a bit more socialist approach
PiS are no way Christian Democrats - they're left of the SLD on economic/welfare issues, and far more right wing than your average European Christian Democrat when it comes to other issues. They never were - their success was in convincing the electorate that they stood for something new that was totally opposite to what the SLD offered.
(and that not that much if you compare how much of a welfare state Germany is and how much Poland now) )
But they want German style policies in a country with far less money. That's socialism.
PO is a party of shady deal makers including the top ranks and of those who seek easy money and time (Roman Kosecki and Iwona Guzowska are serious politicians?))
Who doesn't seek easy money and time? Are you seriously suggesting that PiS, home of the TKM slogan, aren't out for the same?
(and Guzowska did something right to get over 22000 personal votes!)
PO are not "far right" at all when it comes to social/ethical issues.
Maybe not far but still conservative nevertheless.
The Civic Platform combines liberal conservative stances on the economy with conservative stances on social and ethical issues, including opposition to abortion, same-sex marriage, soft drug decriminalisation, euthanasia, fetal stem cell research, and partially to wide availability of in vitro fertilisation.

That quote from Wikipedia is pretty vague and not accurate at all. As a party, they've chosen to focus on economic issues rather than ethical issues - there is no consensus within the party.
they were/are neurotically hard left and hard right at the same time.
hence they were/are centre ;D
PO currently has a 29% voters support (-4% change), PiS has 26% (+4% change), Ruch Palikota 14% (-1% change), SLD 11% and PSL 4%.
s a party, they've chosen to focus on economic issues
yes - plenty of corruption and not really much done and nothing done on time - this is called focus on economy a la PO
