Who will be the next President of Poland?

No he's not. Tusk has hardly made a secret of the fact that he wants the Presidency to be along the Italian or German model - a figurehead. The selection of Komorowski confirms this - that it's a job for someone reliable, stable and unemotional.

"Consider" is diplomatic way of saying he is going to run. He has to appear as though he's "mourning."

Proof? One ambassador to Russia doesn't mean a damn thing. Komorowski was chosen by PO members - Tusk isn't going to risk upsetting the party over something like this, unless Komorowski shows signs of actually losing the election, which is unlikely.

Of course it's possible, but why would he run for a lame duck office when the power is in the hands of the PM?

When Kaczynski was around, the power was not in Tusk's hands. But it is now:

And Tusk has very open plans to reform the Constitution and bring in a German or Italian model where the Prime Minister is the undisputed top dog. I don't think it's much of a secret that PO were waiting until Kaczynski lost the 2010 election in order to bring these reforms forward.

Of course the power is in his hands at the moment - his party controls the Government and the Presidency. But that's what you get when you win most seats in an election.

Well, I think Tusk is doing a good thing on that one but a caveat must be issued. What will happen when they are caught between a rock and a hard place (US and Russia)? NATO is their first obligation on paper but what stand will a future Polish President take on, let's say, Sevastopol which throws Ukraine into the mix? All the good work can be undone in an instant.

A lot of voting is irrational (see GW Bush) , or done at the spur of the moment (see Obama). The same may happen in Poland. For now the media are pretty quiet about the possibility of foul play in the accident but my bet is that it will start on Monday. All that is really needed is a few thousand very vocal Olga's, a few unexplained mysteries and a gaffe by a leftist politician or two and Poles are likely to further honor LK by voting for his party. There does not need to be an overwhelming support for PiS, just enough to squeeze through. With Tusks party having lost a very handsome percentage (11%) of support things may be pretty interesting.
