Soviet style communism mixed with Milton Friedman, sure would explain the mess Poland is in economically, especially in relation to the average Pole who pays up to 60% of his wages to pay for a tiny one bedroom apartment in a commie block. No room for kids and no money for kids.
Poland's Economy Is Booming! The EU's Success Story?
Off the top of your head name me 10 Polish things that are exported and sold abroad by foreign consumers?
Yachts and boats, for one.

by the time the Polish wage levels get anywhere near to the UK then you'll see two things... jobs returning to the west of europe from Poland
Isn't it a contradiction? Jobs will return to the West of Europe only if the cost of labour is lower there than in Poland.
You mean stealing resources from conquered lands. Yes, i think any country could grow very rich by acting in such a way.
If stealing from conquered lands made you rich then Italy would be one of the richest countries and the planet! So naive!!!
Check out the Commonwealth and take a look at the old British Empire countries. The old saying was that 'the sun never set on the Empire'. Take a good hard look and apart from Zimbabwe and failing South Africa every 'conquered' country feeds it's own people, has a good infrastructure and stable governments. You can't tar British Imperialism with the same brush as the Russians, Italians or the French who's old colonies have suffered famine since. Maybe if Queen Victoria would have conquered Poland and they wouldn't have been in the mess that they've been in for 80 years.
If you look at the Commonwealth (about 1/3 of the worlds population!) and you will see a thriving community not like the farce that is the EU.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Member_states_of_the_Commonwealth_of_Nations
Take a look at this link and at the bottom you'll see NEW nations wanting to be a part of the Commonwealth.

Whatever do you mean? Italy had hardly any colonies, just Libya for a short while I think.

umm..are you sure? ..Somalia? (British Somaliland) Nigeria? Sierra Leone? Sudan? Eritrea? Pakistan? Iraq?
Anyway back to the OP, if Poland's economy was 'booming' why would so many people be seeking work elsewhere?
Check out the Commonwealth and take a look at the old British Empire countries.
Do you know how the average India views the British Empire? As a bunch of thieving, raping, murdering bastards. They won't forgive or forget, note how little they buy from the UK. They hate the British.
But you keep telling yourself how ******* great the Empire was for its subjects.

quite a silly sweeping statement.....if Indians hated the British so much they wouldn't want to live here would they? Or play cricket?
Also the English language is a unifying force for them now.
Not that I am saying British colonists were angels or anything like that....but I have met plenty of Indians and Sri Lankans who really didn't seem to hate me for my nationality. Move on.
As for OP, are there ANY success stories in the EU right now? Germany?
Very hard to use the phrase 'average Indian' and worth mentioning that back in the days of Empire most Indians had no contact with the British. Nevertheless there is a lot of goodwill there towards the British, and a significant amount of Anglophilia.
There's a parallel between Gdyniaguy's comments and Adam Zamoyski's hypothesis about Poland. Although Poland was never, ever an economic powerhouse it could have emerged from the difficult times of the early Nineteenth Century very differently.

Not only are you irrational, but you also seem to have problem with telling the truth, so let me remind you of what you said:
Dude are you just saying that as an attempt to wind me up or are you really that stupid, i suppose English may not be your first language so im going to give you the benfit of the doubt.
I am still waiting for any sort of substantiation of your claim that investment by big business is bad.
Are you? well thats news to me. Anyway it would be a complete waste of my time, I already gave you an out and you came back with more BS.
Ive deduced that youre basically a bit of a simpleton, i think im just going to flat out abuse you from now on.
It looks thats your only strategy recently, you should calm down a bit.
Lads, stick on topic.

It could be my fourth language, it would still be better then yours. So you find Poland so unpleasant but you are determined to stay in the country, are you some kind of loser?
I already gave you an out and you came back with more BS.
And what would that be, subscribing to imbecile economics 101. Naturally i don't want the views of an imbecile, that is why I am asking you for the views of a mainstream economist who can substantiate your claim that investment by big business is bad, so have you found one yet?

I do. It doesn't matter what you say. You choose to live elsewhere.
Does WB live in Poland? I was under the impression he returned to his homeland.
Well thats on topic, given the fact that his opinion on the state of the economy is in direct contrast to others who are living here.
WB said here he returned to the UK a year ago. What is it WB?
Poles in the UK not a problem as far as i can tell
I guess it must suck to spend 5 years struggling in Poland, only to return to a UK that is facing 10 years of depression and falling economy. And they be told the country you have just left is the new tiger economy of the EU.
It would probably make you irrationally aggressive and bitter to the messengers. Maybe rather reluctant to accept any evidence highlighting the issue.

Now that youve finally asked i will give an example. Take LG Phillips in Wroclaw, a major manufacterer of HD TV's among other things. They decided to set up a manufacterering plant to supply Europe in Tyniec Maly just outside of Wroclaw, the main draw was cheap property and cheap labour, the lions share of profits all go to Korea, becuase LG Phillip is a South Korean company. This kind of big business set up is prevailant all over Poland.
It doenst take an economist to work out the above, its basic common sense.

Specualte all you like weg, its just that speculation. Since when have you been right about more than about 50%.

I just cant stand BS, and it seems to me that since some of the big hitters of this forum have taken a break your crap is all over the place. Its astonishing how wrong one man can be about such a broad range of subjects.
I will continue to call you out as i see fit.

Providing people with jobs and giving them an income is a bad thing according to you? Boy O Boy, you are thicker than i thought. Still waiting for the economist, don't be shy.
If i wanted to change my profile name, i would have done so a long time ago.

British economy declines, slipping back into deeper recession: Analyst
Figures show the British economy shrank more than originally expected in the first quarter of 2012.
GDP fell 0.3 percent between January and March, compared to the 0.2 percent estimated last month. Construction output also plunged by almost 5 percent, the highest in three years.

His entire argument is that his person experience out weights not only all the scientific evidence but the personal experience of anyone else.

what kind of idiot chooses a screen name with two conservative leaders and then miss spells one of them?
umm..are you sure? ..Somalia? (British Somaliland) Nigeria? Sierra Leone? Sudan? Eritrea? Pakistan? Iraq?
Somalia was under british control for how long? Has applied for membership of the Commonwealth, Nigeria.. the British were instrumental in stamping out the slave trade.. the other problems with nigeria came well after they became independant. Still a member of the Commonwealth, Sierra Leone..we must have really p'd them off..after all the independant Sierra Leone are still members of the Commonwealth, Sudan hated us so much that the send the SDF to aid British Soldiers against the Italians during World War 2. Has applied for membership of the Commonwealth. Need i go on? Iraq really??
It's funny for Imperialist Britain that controlled and decimated these contries for so long but the majority of them are still either Members of the British Commonwealth or have applied to be members. As i've said before all countries have made mistakes in the past including Polands love affair of siding with the wrong side. We British have made ammends and the people of the contries of the old Empire still regard us with some fondness.

Really??? I cant name 1 polish yacht building company and i live in Gdynia!!! as for boat building the Polish goverment has been threatened with action on numerous occasions regarding state handouts to the Polish shipyards (i know this i live in gdynia) they disregard this (SAME A COAL POLLUTION). It's about time that the EU start enforcing fines. Malev airlines in Hungary went out of business for the same thing.

Whatever and who ever they were British! Are you one of these people who think that all people should pay for the sins of their parents/grand parents! My great grandfather was Irish and came to the UK due to famine! I noticed that you ommited Ireland from the list of countries! Is there a reason??
The top and bottom of it is that the UK and the British people created the world that we live in through the Empire and through the industrial revolution. Just about everything you see and use which helps your daily life was thought of in the mind of a British subject. I've got everything to be proud of being British...Yalta and the genocide in South Africa has zip all to do with me!

I'm not going to argue interpretation over what value he holds in personal experience but I am a bit surprised no one has responded to this (I wrote something similar in another thread):

I think it's a fair observation and it should encourage us to ask if that is really "booming" and how long it'll last. Interpret that how you will.

Hi Foreigner...
An outsider cannot judge what is going on inside another country just by brandishing a few 'goverment' figures. Ask people form here in Poland where they are and ask about personal experiences and make your mind up from that. The Polish Government are adept at lying they have had 70 years of learning how to do it.
I live in Gdynia in one of the richest parts of Poland and have seen for myself the rise in Money lending shops, shops and restaurants closing down, i know people who have been serously long tem unemployed, i know a disabled guy who cant walk and cant claim a stitch in benefits, i see old people pushing trolly's filled with rubbish to see what they can earn of it, i see countless people begging outside of shops and churches, cars on the road to old and dangerous that shouldnt be there, i know of families that live in houses with 3-4 other families in crowded conditions, i too have been to villages devoid of anybody under the age of 30... i see countless new housing developments that will never be filled as those who are working arnt earning enough for the smallest of mortgages. A new 3 bed house in Puck is about 300,000zl or about 2,500 a month on a mortgage.... how many unskilled cheap factory workers being hired by the likes of LG can afford that!!!
But then again Poland is booming!
So now he's switched to Ad hominem attacks, the last stand of the desperate.
You are some hypocrite, because I questioned your statement about the communist blocks being around for 200 years, you came out with this:-
"So you build tour apartments to fall down after a couple of years eh?
I'll avoid anything you have built."
When it comes to personal attacks, you are not so innocent.

So now we know... you dislike of the British then probably comes from your hatred of the Protestants!!! The whole Irish catholic/protestant argument is getting a bit wary now..
I'm protestant (english) my fiance is polish catholic
my dad was english catholic and my mother was english protestant
my grandad was english catholic and my gradmother was protestant
my great grandad was catholic (both in Kiltimagh, Ireland) and his wife a Scottish protestant.
We don't have a problem. My family grew up in an shipbuilding area in England which unlike Glasgow and Belfast managed to overthrow the shackles of Sectarianism.. people have moved on..the world has moved on....
