Polish national lotto lottery (today 20 000 000 PLN to win)

It has been such a huge part of reality that it deserves a mention. And today the jackpot is 20 000 000 PLN, so whoever guesses the 6 numbers will get 18 mln (10% tax) provided that he doesn't have to share the winnings with other lucky people. The highest winning ever was 24 636 124 PLN from April 2010.

There are also other kinds of lotteries from Totalizator Sportowy but the classical pick 6 numbers out of 49 is perhaps the most popular due to the high winnings possible. Although they are probably quite low in comparison to western european lotteries?

I will always remember my grandma who would buy her coupon every week on Saturday for 1 PLN :) Now the price is 3 PLN :(

The chances of guessing 6 out of 49 numbers is about 1 to over 13 million. That means that if approximately one third of the whole population of Poland buys the coupon, only one person among those 13 million should be lucky enough to win.

There is no way whatsoever to improve your chances of winning by employing statistics, so studying and applying past statistics is a waste of time.

There are few people among those who win very big stakes at lotteries who are able to "survive" such an event. A recent study in the US has shown that a majority of them have eventually gone bankrupt and today swear they regret very much they they had ever bought their lucky coupon. One such guy who happened to have won hundrends of millions of dollars now spends his nights at his friend's home who is kind enough to let him have a bed under his roof without charging him any fees for that (the guy is hugely indebted so he couldn't have aforded to pay his friend anything). His wife and his children have left this guy in the course of his "happy" life or shortly afterwards. His whole life is now in ruin.

So if you call these winners "lucky people", be aware of the other side of the coin, the one which lotteries do not tend to advertise.

That's right. Due to the low probability very few people would bother with it, but the jackpot is progressive - if nobody wins for a couple of drawings then we have situation like today, which looks very tempting for your average Jan Kowalski.


You are right that it is impractical but the law of large numbers is still valid, even if you can't quantify it.

Unfortunately I haven't ever heard about the fate of any Polish lotto millionaire. Probably the first thing they do is disappear :)

It's 25 000 000 PLN already. From my estimation it looks like over 9 million Poles bought the lottery ticket last time and it will be more tomorrow.

Most likely a better chance of getting hit by lightning.

My neighbour used to say that LOTTO is a tax of dreams... :) When I was younger I bought LOTTO coupons few times, but always without any positive result. Currently I don't pay tax of my dreams :D

I also bought it a few times and never won anything :D It would be silly to expect a win, but it never stopped me from mentally picturing how I would spend the money ;)

Isn't that a matter of public knowledge?

Usually, operators of lotteries only take a tiny percentage of the earnings.

Anyway, we have huge jackpot - 50 000 000. Almost 21 000 000 coupons were purchased. I expect the lottery to be one the leading topics of conversations until Wednesday.

As far as I know it's still not finished, noone won in the previous game, so the cumulation is even bigger than recently. Will you buy coupons ? I'm about to do it this time... My greed is stronger than my sense... :)

I'm gonna buy 1 coupon. 50 mil would allow me to destroy the lives of some forum members in the most sophisticated ways, yeah, that's my primary motivation :)

The plain truth is that if no one could win 20 million zloties, then no one could win 25 milion, then no one could win 35 milion, then someone is able to win 50 milion!!!

But then, apart from this someone or these few people who have won the 50 milion zloties between them, the rest of the milions who bought the ticket are not able to win the 50 milion jackpot. I'm sure you will not be among those who do not win this 50 milion jackpot on Tuesday.

And as they say in downtown Sydney - You have to be in it to win it- personally I believe in horse and greyhound races the odds are SHORT 8-1 with field of 8 animals of course . Betting is fun and if you dig statistics the win comes to you sooner then Lotto Ha....
