Unfortunately, I don't see any information on this coming from any reputable paper. And if there were 10,000 people coming to reclaim land, perhaps it's counting everyone who's filing paperwork before the deadline - not just one group.
If you look at first page on the post there a link to the original article in the Jeruslem Post. Obviously they are not going to all appear on our doorstep all at once.
The point is should people who are now Israeli citizens they have the right to claim back the land that their parents or grandparents had before they fled.
The main issues are:
1) Do they have a right ? 2) If Yes ? What if the land their ancestors once lived on is now inhabited by families ? It is very unlikely that the land is unoccupied. Should these Polish familes pay some strange family compensation for no reason ? Should they leave their home and welcome their newfound Israeli friends to occupy their house ?
3) If their land is now state owned should it be released to them? This will then be at the cost of tax-payers money.
4) Or Should we say: NO. What happened was a result of war and during wartime. During war many many bad things happen: rape, murder, torture. These people were lucky enough to actually flee from the war. How fortunate is that? Why can't they just count their lucky eggs and let it be instead of hiring lawyers to make claims for something which is no longer theirs.
Well, so there's a difference between the Jews, and the Roman Catholics, in wanting their property back, people are saying? Am I defined by my religion?
I simply wish for the property that was forcibly seized by the Nazis, and then kept by the Communist Govt. and Govt., until NOW.
Celinski pointed out rather eloquently much how I feel; my family was skootched about, in the Eastern part of Poland.
Do I have a different set of rights, than the Jews? I don't think so. Now perhaps my plans are different, because I wish to help the local economy in Poland, and live there half the year.
*I did try to pull up the link, but it's nonexistent - can someone revive it, or was it fake?
I feel that all people should be treated with respect, and if they are in the same boat as me, then they deserve to be treated the same; if the property was stolen, like it was from my family, then the Government has stated that they'd give a percentage of the value, or give it back. I'd then be liable for double taxation, between Poland and the USA, over a certain amount.
So, as far as I can see, the people occupying the homes would either stay, or have the opportunity to move to another location - with the local government working with both parties, to ensure things are fine for both sides.
My auntie was prejudiced, so was my great cousin, Alka. I just let them jibber-jabber, and go, "Uh-huh, uh-huh, whatever" because I felt the prejudism would die with them. I'm in shock and horrified, because these people were NEIGHBORS!! My uncles DIED to save many...one was caught with 23 Jews, and was shot on the spot. Another was shot in Katyn.
Another was shot during the Bolshevik Revolution, simply because the Russian soldiers felt like it, and torturing the horses. and who knows how many women they raped, as the soldiers plundered. The Russians 'apologized' for shooting him, but yeah - you can't revive him.
NEVER AGAIN, will we let prejudism define us, at least me. That is why we have left 'Auschwitz' as a memorial, correct?
But then, on the Internet, it's much easier to let insults fly, because you aren't face to face with someone...makes me ponder.
Just because your skin color or religion isn't the same as me, doesn't mean I won't treat you the same. I treat everyone with respect, and politeness. They earn my disrespect, by what they do to others, and me, and I don't mean rumors.
But then, one of my best friends in the Midwest was an Orthodox Jew, with one of her parents showing the number tattoos. Out here in S. California, I walk past Muslims, Jews, Orthodox Jews, Roman Catholics, Protestants. When 9/11 happened, we pulled together ever so tightly, swearing to NOT let what happened during WW2 happen again! We even protected the Sikhs, who wore 'Angels' baseball caps instead of turbans. Many of the working Muslim women have become rather skilled at camouflaging their head covering, with baseball caps and little hat coverings - hoodies are perfect. I say hello to one, who's very shy, and is bold enough to wear her head covering to work. We are a community, we must help each other!
Oh, forgot - another one of my friend's parents were in a Japanese/American Internment Camp. His dad was in the infamous Japanese/American fighting group, with high fatalities, to prove their Loyalty to America, and freedom.
So, yes - I feel the Jewish families have the same rights as I do, in reclaiming my family properties.
My family, and OTHER families died, sacrificing themselves, to help the Jews. I don't think they meant for us to give them a different set of rules, in the future when we are reclaiming property.
My uncles DIED to save many...one was caught with 23 Jews, and was shot on the spot. Another was shot in Katyn.
May your uncle rest in peace. Tell me why then if so many people like your uncle died saving Jews; Why did Kwasnieski apologize to the world jews for the holocaust ? If we did so much for the Jews why are we being made the guilty ones ?
How do you think your uncle will feel knowing that Poland had to apologize for the Holocaust ? Do you feel guilty ?
With all due respect your family is not the only one who's family members died during war. And it was indiscriminate. We all have stories we can discuss. There is no Poish family without such a story.
The unfortunate thing is, this is also happening right now. You dont have to go back 60 years....you can go to Palestine, Darfur, Chechnya, Bosnia....and go and tell the perpetratrators of these conflict zones to please STOP being racist and kickiing people out of their houses!!!!
Do you think these people will get compensation ?
War is not about religion or race. It is about politics and power. Religion and race are used as the 'battlecry', and to arouse nationalism.
Back to the question....who's money should be used to pay any sort of compensation. When you say government you are talking about Polish taxpayers money. So who's pocket should this compensation come from.
And do you really expect people to be relocated to allow some foreign family to come and live in one's home ? Are you crazy ?
And do you really expect people to be relocated to allow some foreign family to come and live in one's home ? Are you crazy ?
Crazy, how mean. Is this a matter of relocating or compensation? Poland apologized or "communist Poland" there is a differance you know? As a Roman Catholic I can feel sorry and apologize for what happened to the Jewish in Poland, just as I would hope the Jewish could do for us.
some foreign family to come and live in one's home ?
Foreigh= POLISH Do you think you are better because you stayed? Your military born in Poland would be dead if they stayed for fighting Soviets. This does not make you more Polish.
What hypocrites, how would Jews feel if Armenians fought to deny the Holocust.....
This is because 'Donmeh Jews', who are mostly Greek/Turkish Jews who 'converted' to Islam were among the leaders of the 'Young Turks' who helped orchestrate the genocide...if knowledge of this were to be exposed, it would hurt the 'Holocaust Inustry'.
Poland apologized or "communist Poland" there is a differance you know?
THE APOLOGY HAPPENED IN JULY 2001. YES ONLY 10 YEARS AFTER COLLAPSE OF COMMUNISM
Celinski PLEASE GO BACK TO SLEEP. Its better for Poland ;-)
news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/1431339.stm
QUOTE Polish President Alexander Kwasniewski has made a formal apology on behalf of the Polish people for a massacre of Jews 60 years ago.
"For this crime we should beg the souls of the dead and their families for forgiveness," he said at a ceremony in the village of Jedwabne.
"This is why today, as a citizen and as the president of the Republic of Poland, I beg pardon. I beg pardon in my own name, and in the name of those Poles whose conscience is shattered by that crime," he said.
Now read the full story as I see it an apology by the President yet the responsabilty yet to be determined. If you like we can speak of the behavior of the Jewish in eastern Poland?
"These are all lies. I am spending the day quietly at home. It is Holocaust business. It is not my business. Germans are responsible, so why should we apologise?" the priest, Edward Orlowski, said.
Now read the full story as I see it an apology by the President yet the responsabilty yet to be determined.
WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT ??? IT APPEARS YOU HAD NO IDEA WHEN AND WHERE THIS PUBLIC APOLOGY ON BEHALF OF THE POLISH REPUBLIC TOOK PLACE, THAT IS WHY YOU MENTIONED IT HAPPENED DURING POLAND'S COMMUINIST ERA.
THE FACT IS THE PRESIDENT APOLOGISED ON BEHALF OF THE NATION. THIS IS A NATIONAL APOLOGY.
I, AND MANY OTHERS, DO NOT AGREE WITH THE APOLOGY. NOR DID THE PRIEST. THIS DOES NOT MEAN THE APOLOGY DID NOT TAKE PLACE.
THIS DOES NOT MEAN THE APOLOGY DID NOT TAKE PLACE.
You are correct, or if Poland had any part. Poland also apoligized to Ukraine and we are still waiting for them to apologize like they said they would.
Celinski PLEASE GO BACK TO SLEEP. Its better for Poland ;-)
I had my coffee, Thanks I don't feel being grumpy helps to educate or is better for Poland.
Rather, it happened only 7 years ago in a 'democratic' republic of Poland ?
Yes, I admit it, you were right I was off on another issue and wrong. I never even saw this artical and found it very informative. Do you know where the village of Jedwabne is?
Mao Tse Tung: China, 1958-61 and 1966-69 & Tibet 1949-50 / 49-78,000,000 Jozef Stalin: USSR, 1932-39 / 23,000,000 (the purges plus Ukraine's famine) Adolf Hitler: Germany, 1939-1945 / 12,000,000 (concentration camps and civilians WWII) Hideki Tojo: Japan, 1941-44 / 5,000,000 (civilians in WWII) Pol Pot: Cambodia, 1975-79 / 1,700,000 Kim Il Sung: North Korea, 1948-94 / 1.6 million (purges and concentration camps) Menghistu: Ethiopia, 1975-78 / 1,500,000 Ismail Enver: Turkey, 1915 / 1,200,000 Armenian Genocide
i hope this isn't the start of the 'polish playing the victim' AGAIN, everybody knows that Poland had a rough ride throughout history but please lets not bang on and on and on about it.
You have a bright future so look towards it instead of over your shoulders. I have so many polish friends who are looking forward for themselves and their country and don't really care anymore about the history, yes they pay their respects when called for but are more concentrated on their own and Poland's future.
I think a few adults in here could take not of a few 19-22 year old Polish male/females in the UK.
Are you that much of an a**. "Playing Victim" , let me ask you, did you know your grandmother or was she killed, what about aunts, uncles? Did you loose your homeland? How dare you say this is "playing victim".
to be honest all of my family have been involved in military action and some of them died yes, some of them i don't even know how, some in bomber command, some on the ground in the 2nd world war and then through history gulf war etc etc.
I just feel that people need to move on instead of bouncing around little messages to each other about what you have or have not suffered and concentrate on your countries bright future. I understand as a nation Poland has a lot of hurt and grief however everybody moves on and i think its time members of this forum thought of the positive (future) rather than the negative (Past)
I don't want to offend and if i have sorry, i just feel its time for a change of difrection
I understand as a nation Poland has a lot of hurt and grief however everybody moves on and i think its time members of this forum thought of the positive (future) rather than the negative (Past)
As soon as history includes the truth I will. Remember Poland was not to even speak of what took place until they were free in 1989. Look at the list above we are forgotten, I an reminding. Thank you for saying sorry.
I was using my family to SHOW as an example, that EVERYONE'S family pretty much did the same thing. Many people died, and I do feel that a wholesale extermination went on against the Polish people for decades, while Poland was plundered for her resources. I also feel Poland better safeguard her forests, and that wood farming needs to be set up properly, so we will always have beautiful, untouched forests!
So - since when does what I say, mean anything about where the money comes from? Gee, let's see...in America, that would mean the taxes gathered pay for it, ergo your point is that the Polish tax payers would, too, NO DUH!!
I already STATED what deals they have lined up, I cannot speak for the government itself.
I also think perhaps age comes into this: if you are a teenager, you don't care so much, want to go forward with your life. If you're 30+, it's personal, you saw what it did to your family members, and how miserably they DIED, always wondering where the bodies are, so we can give them a proper burial, etc.!
Dont be silly carol, look at the list again.it says top 8 ranking in scale of numbers killed........so the far less than a hundred thousand Poles killed doent even come close to the top 8,nothing about being forgoton, just fact, less Poles were killed by Stalin than tutsis killed by hutus in 90 days.
Ok,why have you any right to any land or proparty then Julie...were you personally forced out of one of the many castles you bang on bout? are any family members who were still alive to re claim them,or are you just out for what you can get?Enquiring minds wish to know...
Okay, so I'll move on - after I receive ALL my family's properties, and my great-grandfather's body, alrighty then, we have an agreement! (I'm being sarcastic, for those who don't notice I exaggerated my point).
Dont be silly carol, look at the list again.it says top 8 ranking in scale of numbers killed......Inquiring minds wish to know...
1.7 million if you read the link. Let me ask you a ques. ISTHATYU, Are your family able to have a will and leave behind what they earned to you? Should you have this right or should I just take it from you?
Im talking about Katyn and the surrounding camps that carol talks about,of course many more were killed/died in the deportations, still, 1.7 mil, comes very near the bottom of the list, and is that source verifiable?or jsut speculation also.
UN put aside the money back in 1945, for this moment in time - it was set aside to help settle the land issues.
My family was forced out of their residences, including one that is now a museum, 'Lancut'. Also has a carriage museum, of our forefathers. He was able to save the majority of the residence, and now anyone can visit - with those foot coverings, and no high heels allowed.
Anything else, smarty-pants?
