Pity says you :)

Have you seen "Idiot abroad"?

(About the pyramids in Egypt)
"if that was in my street the council would say 'get it down, it's a death trap'"

Such as?

Maybe a big, fat Buddha in Kraków or something.

what do you feel about it?

I've already told you.

I am sure they would be happy to put Mary beside her son ;p
If you we are going to compare like with like.

No, because Mary would be owner of the same Casino. (Come up with something clever?)

Not in a gay, Jewish or Pagan nation.

Well, I think some countries are going back to their more Pagan roots when it comes to lifestyle and freedom, and I don't think I have to tell you what Benedict had to say about that in his latest speech. So maybe it's time Christian symbols buggered off to a Christian country then? (According to your logic.) I mean, atleast *I* am tolerant enough to allow them their statues and their churches, eventhough they're nothing more than a shrinking minority here.

Why aren't you complaining about this? or this or the Sphinx surely they should tear them down?

It's funny how you can't read. Where did I say people should tear it down? Where did I say people shouldn't build it? I'm merely opposed to the idea of a Jesus being the only socially accepted religious symbol in a country, and that's all. I still hope that some day, people will see the light and stop looking at the sky for help, and start looking at eachother, aswell as looking after eachother. I don't think that statue will help us to accomplish that, no. They could've build a factory for all the jobless sods in their town instead, or maybe they could've made a difference somewhere. But you're right, it's their town, and their money, just like this is the internet, and my opinion.

What do you want to hear from me Sean? Yay? Praise the lord?

:)

warszawski put me on to it, it is genius :)

Maybe a big, fat Buddha in Kraków or something.

So why aren't you complaining about the Buddhas in Thailand?

No, because Mary would be owner of the same Casino. (Come up with something clever?)

Nope, gambling is not allowed like it is in Las Vegas in many places.
Don't you think it's wrong for them to "push" their gambling ways onto the none gamblers of LAS VEGAS???

I mean, atleast *I* am tolerant enough to allow them their statues and their churches, even though they're nothing more than a shrinking minority here.

Tolerant? I can't agree, you are sitting in Holland telling us how a huge statue of Jesus in a predominantly catholic country is oppressive to other faiths but say nothing about the huge buddhas in the far-east.

It's funny how you can't read.

Surely you can't read?, I never said you said ''people should tear it down'', I asked a question.
If you are going to accuse me of poor reading comprehension, least you could do is understand what I actually wrote.

I'm merely opposed to the idea of a Jesus being the only socially accepted religious symbol in a country, and that's all.

So you are equally torn up over Buddhas in Thailand?

dfgds

Thailand of course being much poorer than Poland.

What do you want to hear from me Sean? Yay? Praise the lord?

You know I am an atheist.
i just believe in freedom of expression and as far as I know there have been no complaints about the Jesus by locals, in fact because it is their money, I assume they want it.

If people in the place were protesting against it or if it were tax payer's money, I would feel differently about it but for me, it is an investment and an expression of a free Poland (not the church hating commie one), people need to feel that and if they want to build a feckin huge Jesus, then good for them!

You can't tell me they don't expect 1000's of pilgrims?

The same people canvassing for this idiocy would have been the same having put fire to the barn in Jedwabne. Probably they have family in Kielce as well ?

It would fit in the picture.

Explain to me how the two are linked or I will think you are a savage madman.

Fits, doesn't it?

I don't know one normal Catholic who supports this statue. Even some of them who weren't against it as such were pretty appalled by the golden crown.

A crown of thorns, yes...but a golden crown? Hardly strikes me as something that Jesus would have wanted.

Fits, doesn't it?

How? Or I will think you are also a savage madman.

A crown of thorns, yes...but a golden crown? Hardly strikes me as something that Jesus would have wanted.

It is a symbol, you don't have to be so literal...

Maybe Buddha wouldn't like thousands of golden statues of him either but who cares? It is just decoration and highlights it.

put fire to the barn in Jedwabne

Next "other way intelligent"
Please tell us how many Jew those 'same people' burnt in barn.

there should be apartments inside of the statue so people can live "closer" to Jesus... and this view!!

How? Or I will think you are also a savage madman.

Because sadly - the people in Poland who fund such things tend to be the same ones who will give up money to Radio Maryja and suchlike. I don't think it's much of a secret that in rural, deprived areas - priests carry much more influence than in the cities. I suspect Swiebodzin, being notable for absolutely nothing except being the first traffic jam in over 1000km, is such a place.

I think it's very notable that the priest in charge has declined to say how much it cost - probably because it would be denounced as a massive waste of money in a town that desperately needs it.

It's why I think saying "West is A, East is B" is nonsense - Lubuskie is pretty damn poor.

He should be able to walk, so people can follow in his footsteps :)

The same people canvassing for this idiocy would have been the same having put fire to the barn in Jedwabne.

And the same ones - insofar they would be able to write, read and think coherently, which were slashing with razors the faces of female Jewish students trying to enter a Polish university aula before the war.

The same ones who during the mad and ill-judged PW found time to carry out their private pogroms on the few surviving Jews in the time SS shells were raining down on their heads.

By the way, who desecrated Irena Sendler's grave this year with "Jews Out"? "Patriots" ?

O yes fits perfectly it was szmatławiec Gazeta Wyborcza who spread the lies about Jedwabne.

You Poles - except Polska A - are antisemitic into your very bone marrow
SeanBM  34 | 5781

Because sadly - the people in Poland who fund such things tend to be the same ones who will give up money to Radio Maryja and suchlike.

But you are comparing that to a supposed act of burning people in a barn, of murder.

So will put the same question to you as I did Arien, do you complain about golden Bhuddas in Thailand, which is a much poorer country.

Can you accept that that is what many Thai people want and it is a cultural need?

And the same ones

Prove it. Prove that the people who want to build a Jesus have anything to do with the atrocities you are claiming.

Trying to deny Jedwabne now, are we?

Prove that the people who want to build a Jesus have anything to do with the atrocities you are claiming.

Youz are a bit mad for going on this rant.

So all Catholics are Jew murders, sorry not all, just those who want to build a Statue of Jesus with their own money.
Youz are off your rockers.

It's just a Jesus statue, big or small, if people want it then why complain about it.
SeanBM  34 | 5781
9 Nov 2010 /  #166
because apparently if you want to build a statue, you also want to slash people's faces with razors and burn them in barns.

What the **** is wrong with this statement? Am I the only one who thinks this is mad?

Well I have the great pleasure of actually living in Świebodzin. When I first came here five years ago and heard about this scheme I thought it was absolutly bonkers, tacky and all the rest of it but it really has been a community project and I really feel that it has brought the town together. I am not religious at all but I really do think the statue has had a positive effect on the town already. Świebodzin is a little town with not all that much going for it, it's not very well off and most of the young people see it as a bit of a dead end place. I think the people here are really hoping that this statue will put Świebodzin on the map and honestly I think even the ones that objected in the beginning have become quite proud of the project. Maybe it's not to everyone's taste but it will bring people to the town, even if they just come to see how tacky it is. It's something worth seeing. Hopefully in time the local businesses will get some benefit from it and will make the town more prosperous and that will have a knock on effect.

I only wish they had found a nicer location for it...it's across the road from the local branch of Tesco.

i don't know what's going on but something wrong's in Poland... first of all, Kaczor lays at the Wawel now, second a statue of Jesus erected from the ground like a rocket... what's next? another Kaczor for a Queen of Poland?

there is something wrong because of the huge number of insane activities in the country...

It's just daft. If that's what the people want then why not.
Though pgtx has a point about kacz in the wawel though.

So why aren't you complaining about the Buddhas in Thailand?

Because believe it or not, there also Jesuses in Thailand.

Nope, gambling is not allowed like it is in Las Vegas in many places.
Don't you think it's wrong for them to "push" their gambling ways onto the none gamblers of LAS VEGAS???

Now you're talking! But do you have any idea how many Churches Las Vegas has?? I think somewhere around 300!! So. There goes your comparison again. (Poor Sean!)

I can't agree, you are sitting in Holland telling us how a huge statue of Jesus in a predominantly catholic country is oppressive to other faiths but say nothing about the huge buddhas in the far-east.

If other statues aren't allowed or tolerated, then yes, that's a sign of dominance and oppression of other faiths. I can't even begin to tell you how weak the rest of your argument is, because this thread obviously wasn't about a statue in the far-east, so that's probably why I didn't mention it. But to satisfy your curiousity: I would probably tell people in the far-east the exact same thing, if that's not too hard for you to understand.

If you are going to accuse me of poor reading comprehension, least you could do is understand what I actually wrote.

Oh, I've read it already, and it's pretty clear to see you've tried to imply something similar twice now.

So you are equally torn up over Buddhas in Thailand?

If they don't tolerate other symbols, yes. I believe everyone should be allowed to express their beliefs, no matter if they're the last of the Mohicans or not. Just because someone belongs to a minority, doesn't mean that this someone should shut up or not be able to visibly express his or her existence in a society. (Which is obviously something that some Liberals should really take to heart.)

Thailand of course being much poorer than Poland.

Yes, but as you can see this thread was about a statue in Poland, and not about a statue in Thailand.

You know I am an atheist. i just believe in freedom of expression and as far as I know there have been no complaints about the Jesus by locals, in fact because it is their money, I assume they want it.

Am I saying something else then? I'm expressing my opinion on the internet, because someone posted a thread about it. Hey, you can say what you want, but I sure as hell didn't create this thread!

Sean, this is just my opinion about it. I don't actually expect anyone else to do as I say or whatever. So I'm not going to apologize for my opinion, and I wish them good luck with their statue and their pilgrims. However, I will keep telling everyone it's a sign of dominance and oppression for as long as other religious symbols of this magnitude aren't accepted in Poland, which you know is true if you look at 99% of the ''Polish'' replies here. (And f*ck whatever Thailand has to do with that!)

:)
