Whatever the case, the structure has all the makings of a major tourist attraction

I think you'll find that people like me will avoid that town like the plague.

:)

Some may think the Jesus statue is dumb, some that it is a sign of stupidity to crudely hurt the religious feelings of others.

hehe... riiiight...
i think a huge statue of Budda would be even a bigger attraction... lol

But seriously, what's the pattern? How do they chose the character to make for a monument? And why was it not Robin Hood or maybe Janosik? That would be helluva fun and major attraction - not only for pilgrims but for kids too. As for now the gigantic scarecrow is disturbing even for adults.

It was built privately. I don't understand the outrage...

Well, how the hell something so tacky (the crown? please...) got planning permission is beyond me!

Still, being Poland, no doubt it'll be covered in reklama soon..

It was built privately.

He/they could whatever they want. Poland is free country do you understand pinko? If you want you and your comrades can build bigger monument, Che Guevara for example.

covered in reklama soon

No, no, no, I see the difference now!
That's why I put for you two real-life photos of Jesus in the act [above].

well, idiot, you still don't understand !
The difference is that Jesus statue is erected due to the will of people, who want it erected and voluntarily are willing to pay for it !In case of Stalin statue it was tyrannically imposed on the people by a tyrannical state and they had to pay for it whichever they liked it or not!

The fact that you cannot see it make you an biased idiot!
Not your anti-Christian attitude.

But what's the harm, really?

There's no harm, but unfortunately some Christians treat me as if I'm the devil himself when I say I don't believe in Jesus. I mean, I really don't see any horns growing from my skull all of a sudden, and I really don't feel bad or lost either!

I myself honestly don't believe Jesus has ever existed

That really has no bearing on the issue as you are just combating one belief with another.

Have you ever taken a good look at the Celtic cross for example? It existed *long* before Christianity, and it doesn't symbolize what most Christians think it symbolizes.

That is not in fact true.
The Celtic cross did not exist in Ireland before Christianity.
The Cross came directly from Christianity and the circle came from the pre-existing symbol used in the indigenous religion.
So to make the transition easier from Pagan to Christianity, the Christians adapted some of the existing beliefs with their own new Catholic ones.

If you keep this in mind, then how can I hate someone I don't believe existed?

Still a belief, I don't believe in the coca-cola version of Santa but I sure as hell do not go round telling people they shouldn't put them up every Christmas.

Now, I've given some of you guys a hypothetical scenario about the possibility of a statue which symbolizes someone else's religion.

But you know that is fine, in a country where the overwhelming population are that religion.

which is exactly why they shouldn't expect me to cheer their symbols.

Nobody expects anything from you, why would they? This has nothing to do with you or me.
This causes you absolutely no distress, doesn't even come in to your world except for this thread on this forum. I think you are just complaining because that's what you do when it comes to religious issues ;p

So that's why I feel it's just another sign of trying to dominate someone else and forcing your vieuws on someone else.

Who? certainly not you.

I keep thinking of Las Vegas, why don't you complain how they are forcing thier gambling on other people?

Of course, Poland is Poland, and if people in Poland think this is the way to go then this is the way to go for them. I'm just merely giving *my* opinion about it on the internet, and the last time I've checked we still had freedom of speech.

What about freedom of expression?
The people of this town have raised the money themselves to build what they want, where is the problem????
*I still think they should build a huge robotic Jesus*

He certainly existed - there are enough references to him in different sources, though most Christians today wouldn't be able to reconcile their image with the reality of the person, nor would they like him much.

First time I saw a black Jesus was in Lithuania, not to mention the black Madonna ;)

But what's the harm, really? And being a majority Catholic country, it will please many people.

yes, an erected statue pleasures people... hehe, that sounds weird... ;)

I think the word you meant was pleases. Not so weird.

I don't know about people but I do blame this szmatławiec.
For telling me I inferior to Jews
For telling me that founders of polish royal dynasty Piasts were slave traders.
For telling lies.
Above all of this head of Szmatławiec is brother to murder son to terrorist and commie.

Ah, paranoid about Jews yet again. Funny - almost everyone that attacks Gazeta Wyborcza is almost certainly anti-semtic too.

As for telling lies - remember, it was "Gazeta Polska" that was lying about the last moments of a dead person, not Gazeta Wyborcza. Easy mistake, I know - they both start with "Gazeta".

Anyway, you're just jealous that Michnik is far more of a hero than you'll ever be, keyboard warrior!

Ah, paranoid about Jews yet again. Funny

Very, sure wasn't Jesus a Jew :)
Some would say "king of them" even.
delphiandomine  86 | 17823
9 Nov 2010 /  #137
Indeed. Yet the same people who profess Jesus to be "KING OF POLAND" are the same ones who rant about Jews. Rather funny, given that he was born a Jew, lived as a Jew and died a Jew.

By that vein, Michnik is far closer to Jesus than any "Gazeta Polska" reader.

Well, you are inferior to some Jews.

attacks Gazeta Wyborcza is almost certainly anti-semtic

I don't give damn Michnik being called anti-Semite.
Guess where did that information from.

Certain hero for certain people. Is his brother your hero as well?

yeah, i could never understand that... christians loving jesus and hating so much jews... no logic what so ever... they get very offended when one points it out...

That really has no bearing on the issue as you are just combating one belief with another.

Read again. I'm not combating anything.

That is not in fact true.

You're going to get it now, but you knew that, didn't you? With Celtic Cross, I don't mean the Christian Celtic crosses which have been erected everywhere, but I mean the Sun Cross or Bolgar Cross, which is the Cross inside a circle, which is a religious and astrologic symbol, which stems back from the Neolithic and Bronze age periods. (Prehistoric Europe.) So yes, Sean, that's totally true, and I'm not even talking about the rest of the Pagan symbols adopted by Christianity.

The Celtic cross did not exist in Ireland before Christianity.

I like to think I've explained myself perfectly.

The Cross came directly from Christianity and the circle came from the pre-existing symbol used in the indigenous religion.

Just look up the Bolgar Cross or the Sun Cross, okay?

So to make the transition easier from Pagan to Christianity, the Christians adapted some of the existing beliefs with their own new Catholic ones.

Exactly.

Still a belief, I don't believe in the coca-cola version of Santa but I sure as hell do not go round telling people they shouldn't put them up every Christmas.

Me neither, but you're missing my point, as usual. It's not about not putting it up, it's about not allowing others putting their symbols up. Besides, I still believe there's a huge difference between what you choose to do in the comfort of your own living room, and what you choose to plant in the town's square.

But you know that is fine, in a country where the overwhelming population are that religion.

Yes, but still, different beliefs shouldn't be demonized or forbidden.

Nobody expects anything from you, why would they? This has nothing to do with you or me. This causes you absolutely no distress, doesn't even come in to your world except for this thread on this forum. I think you are just complaining because that's what you do when it comes to religious issues ;p

I'm not complaining. I'm giving my opinion in reaction to what someone said about rabid Jesus-haters, which is my opinion and my explanation to that person for educational purposes, which you're obviously complaining about.

Who? certainly not you.

People who feel the same about it. (And they do exist.)

I keep thinking of Las Vegas, why don't you complain how they are forcing thier gambling on other people?

They allow *other* Casinos to compete, right? (And that's why you're missing my point!) So basically, you should vieuw this statue as the Casino in Las Vegas which doesn't allow other Casinos to exist.

What about freedom of expression?
The people of this town have raised the money themselves to build what they want, where is the problem????

There's no problem with the statue itself, but maybe you should see what happens when someone raises money and wants to erect a statue of gay people, or maybe some kind of Jewish or pagan symbol. That's the problem.

He certainly existed - there are enough references to him in different sources, though most Christians today wouldn't be able to reconcile their image with the reality of the person, nor would they like him much.

I mean the mythical figure Jesus and the story of his birth and resurrection, and not the actual person Yeshua. (I mean, compare the whole birth and resurrection story to similar stories from ancient religions and you'll get the idea.)

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them:

it's about not allowing others putting their symbols up.

Such as?

People who feel the same about it.

So what do you feel about it?

They allow *other* Casinos to compete, right? (And that's why you're missing my point!) So basically, you should vieuw this statue as the Casino in Las Vegas, which doesn't allow other Casinos to exist.

I am sure they would be happy to put Mary beside her son ;p
If you we are going to compare like with like.

There's no problem with the statue itself, but maybe you should see what happens when someone raises money and wants to erects a statue of gay people, or maybe some kind of Jewish or pagan symbol. That's the problem.

Not in a gay, Jewish or Pagan nation.

Why aren't you complaining about this or the Sphinx surely they should tear them down?

It belongs to the same madness as Licheń. Another place where they morally extort from old people their latest grosz for the greater importance of the polish church

I don't think it's any coincidence that this statue has gone up in one of the most economically deprived areas of Poland.

I just think it's sad that they chose to spend so much money on vanity projects rather than improving the quality of life of the people living there. I've been there, and the place is going to suffer a hammer blow when the motorway bypasses it - economically, it's ****** already - what hope does it have next year?
SeanBM  34 | 5781
9 Nov 2010 /  #146
what hope does it have next year?

Possibly hundreds or thousands of pilgrims a year.

Possibly being the magic word ;)

No doubt there'll be rumours of miracles there next year.

I still want to know what idiot gave planning permission for this in the first place. Or was it the age-old problem that because it's the Church, you can't say no?
