Giant Jesus Rising in Świebodzin ( Tallest in world )

The small town of Świebodzin in northwest Poland is ordinarily nothing more than a rest stop at an intersection between two highways for most travellers. Soon, however, it will boast an attraction worth travelling to - or so its citizens hope.

krakowpost.com/article/2400

Ain't this a little bit to much? In the communist times it would be a huge stalin statue. But instead of Stalin they put Jesus.

Welcome to the Régime totalitaire de Radio Maria!!!

Do you have a problem with the statue?
You aren't paying for it.
You aren't Polish.
And you surely don't live in Swiebodzin and don't have to see the statue every day on your way to work.
Also, the statue will attract tourists and inject more money into the economy.

Yet your cynical attitude, encapsulated in the sentence

Welcome to the Régime totalitaire de Radio Maria!!!

seems to demonstrate that you are opposed.
While people are building huge statues of turkeys, Elvis, or weiners elsewhere in the world to break various retarded World Book of Guiness Records, one statue of Jesus in a country where Christianity plays a huge role in the entire culture and traditions, is ridiculed.

My advice, if you don't like it, leave the country.

This statue is actually a huge mechanical robot that will wreak havoc in downtown Tokyo but first Świebodzin.

The second coming is here and he's gonna kick arse!

In the summer of 2008, assembly of a giant statue of a crowned Jesus Christ began on the outskirts of the town. Intended to serve as a future site of pilgrimage, the statue, similar in design to the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, is being erected on a hill and will be nearly 100-feet-tall. Construction of the statue is being funded through collections by local people.

Yes it just shows that the poor ppl are still under the influence of the church.

You aren't paying for it.

Thank god im not!

You aren't Polish.

I'm

Tourists? maybe one or two Pilgrims will visit the place.

I just don't see the point of building it in a small and unimportant town. Krakow would be my chooice.

My advice, if you don't like it, leave the country.

Same goes to you ;)

it's their money, they can do what they want with it.

I think you drastically underestimate what something like this will bring to the town.

You all seem to miss the point.
Here we have a little known town, with the "world's biggest" Jesus in Poland.
Poland is a country where hundreds of thousands of people go on long pilgrimages every year.
Put the two together and you have a town that will become much bigger and prosper.
I think it's clever.

Although my Jesus bot destroying down town Tokyo is better ;)

It will just look ridiculous.

Imagine a 35 m tall Jesus behind this Ratusz!!!

Fair play to the good folks of Świebodzin! They have noticed what I have been saying
for ages - that, so far, our country hadn't a statue of Jesus of proper size, and they
decided to supply the deficiency. Chapeau bas!

Sean:
Cheers to you good Sir :)
You are respectful of the idea, even though you are an atheist.

A few of you around here could learn a little tact from this gentleman...

Torq:
Well said.
How are you doing Torq?

i've been waiting for wroclaw to cause a stir and build something of touristic interest. but it'll never happen here.

the statue doesn't look too bad. it might be better if the head were a viewing platform. Then it might pay for itself.

According to Father Sylwester Zawadzki, who masterminded the project, the statue of Christ the King near the German border will welcome visitors to Catholic Poland. Thank God our ancestral homeland has yet to be Amsterdamised! Hopefully it never will!

Maybe you right. Maybe they shall give the money to the poor.

But we have got no right to decide what this small community decide to do with their money.
Well at least until the Americans would sell the statue of freedom and donate the money to the charity. Or the French - the Eiffel tower. Or the British - the Eye of London.

I admire the Swiebodzin people! And I know that as long as there are people like them - there is no reason to worry about islamization, globalization, or any other "-ation" in Poland.

The message is simple: This is Poland. This is a Jesus Country, so phunk off!

The Africarium in the zoo will generate huge interest, won't it? As I recall, it'll be the only exhibit like it in Poland.

Dearie me, do try to keep up with events in Poland. The town is being bypassed by the motorway. No-one will see the statue, except people interested in tasteless modern art.

Or a restaurant (bread and fish) in his ear, that'd be cool.

The message is simple: This is Poland. This is a Jesus Country, so phunk off!

Is that meant as irony?

no, i want a statue of Rydzyk or Kaczynski's welcome visitors to our beautiful and sane country...

Or a statue of me :)
it could happen, you never know... two thousand years from now, when a religion is made from PF and I am seen as the enlightened one, of course.

Again, a non-Pole resorting to putting down a statue which stands for 1000 years of Polish history.

Tell me again, how a statue like this can be called tasteless, in face of statues of hotdogs and ketchup bottles being erected in the West? Seriously, will you lose sleep over this statue tonight?

No, the statue stands for nothing but a grotesque example of overindulgence. The money used could be used to fund a better life for orphans, for instance!

The Christ statue in Rio is a work of art. This one? It explains why we look down on villagers.

A statue that size will be seen from miles around, motorway or not. And it is on a hilltop from what I have heard.

Be careful with the "we" pronoun. I don't look down on any villagers.

*unless you used "we" as pluralis maiestaticus*

Why there is no statue like this in every Polish town???I am asking why?A statue like this in every even the smallest town would fullfill dreams and needs of every Pole.Thank God at least production of JP II statues goes according to the plan and soon every village in Poland will have at least one.

Hopefully they'll have the common decency to put some obstruction lighting on it for when the spot lights are turned off..

On a side note, isn't this idolatry?

Dude are you phucking crazy?People in Poland want more statues not some bullshit like orphanages or hospitals.Phuck no.Every town and village should have AT LEAST 3 statues:Jesus,JP II and Kaczynski. Each minimum 35 meters high.

Hopefully they'll have the common decency to put some obstruction lighting on it for when the spot lights are turned off..

You got to be kidding!!!No need for lights,Jesus will guide you.

Look at the bright side, we can throw our rotten tomatoes at the statue when no one else is watching.

xD

it's their money, they can do what they want with it.

If I ever win the lottery, I'm going to erect a statue of Lucifer somewhere close to that one, with the angel wings and all.

No worries, lads. If you really want to see Lucifer, then eventually you will.

Whether you like it or not when that happens is a completely different matter :)

Not at all.

Just like other statues or religious paintings are not idolatry, or a little cross symbol that I wear
isn't idolatry either, because we don't worship those objects, but merely use them as external
signs of our faith.
