Actually at the time much of Silesia was still Bohemian (Czech) but these guys were by the time heavily Polonised for over six generations so there is a distinct possibility that Koperniks father had a strong Czech ancestry but thats impossible to trace at this point, for all intents and purposes he was a Pole.

Regional identification was strong then, Sok. What if he had called himself a Silesian? ;) ;) Even now, some are pushing for regional autonomy.

As in whatever archives might have existed prior to both world wars are now most likely gone and its impossible.


He was born in Kraków and because he was a med-level patrictian he had to speak fluent Polish to do business (he would have dealt with commoners who didnt speak Latin and river trade was completely dominated by Poles).

So no he wouldnt call himself a Silesian.


They had it before the war, they never denied being Polish though.

Have you heard of Gorol, Hanys and Kreuzberg? There is a kind of denial, trust me.

Nope sorry, while some Polish merchants would have known German or Latin the people working in river transportation were typically simple folk, you could not work with them without fluent knowledge of Polish.

Besides we know his surname was written in Polish at his birth (archidiecesial chronicle) and historically German families used German surnames so thats pretty solid evidence.

Germany is completely mentaly deranged country full of complexes. Even Bismarck wasn`t German and they would like to germanize Kopernik.

All the talk about germans teaching copernicus is absurd. He studied at Krakow university in Poland which is the oldest in central europe(that includes germany doesnt it? oh sorry i mean the holy roman empire) and second to only france i think in all of europe. The problem I think lies in the fact that poles and germans have been heavily mixed since the mongol invasions of 1241. When poles let german immigrants in.(does rome come to mind?)And probably before that even. The other problem is is that germans want to take from poland and not give back. Does Russia and Germany even teach the truth to their people? Have times really changed? Is Poland trying to make Important German people with Polish blood polish? i think not.

Historically Poland has always been uninterested in swallowing up everything they can.

Argue all you want, but the German version simply has a cooler ring to it.

That's exactly what I was saying. Every country tries to present itself in the most positive way, I guess. To achieve that goal it doesn't "hurt" to rewrite history a little, or so they think.

That settles it then. He was Polish, otherwise the Germans would have been insistent on calling him Kupfernikus all these years!

Mr copper knickers was a very smart guy , so its pretty dam obvious he must have come from Yorkshire..its the only possible explanation...

Lets just say he was a Polish Astronomer with German origins, shall we? It is truthful and gives both sides a piece if him.

That's a bad deal, besides, Bruckner was 75% Polish anyway and he favored slavic languages, especially Polish.

The latest info suggests that Copernicus was Polish and German but virtually all of his studies and works were Polish including his militant defense against German aggression.

That alone suggests that he thought himself as being Polish. No getting around it.

Fair enough, if you don't want to take the deal, we keep Copernicus. Problem solved.

Hey, I'm part of the "we". Copernicus was a multi talented and innovative giant who matches up against anyone in history.

Read the thread again about his "polish studies"....and there wasn't "german agression" at that point....

Point in fact he defended polish interests of a polish king, he commanded a polish regiment and the infantry that assaulted the city was made up of Germans sooo...

All his studies were in in latin, latin was the official administrative language of Poland, he never wrote a single scientific work in polish or german languages.

Copernicus probably cared less about his "national identity" during his entire life than this single thread did.
