Just wondering given that Poles are the largest migrant group in the UK and that is the main reason underpinning Theresa May's determination to bring down migration numbers to the UK.
Nah. Unemployment is shrinking in Poland consistently. Exports are improving daily and they seem to trade with someone new on a very regular basis. Strong investment from some rich places in western europe. Consistantly a very good performer of eu. The better it does the less leave. Try 80,000.
So if the economy is improving why aren't Polish people going home?
Probably because those Poles who have been in the UK for any length of time have settled down and made their lives here. Generally speaking they are financially better off in the UK and there is more opportunity here for those who speak English well.
I would think just the opposite, Chemikiem! PM May has doggedly vowed a la the late Dame Maggie as well as her male predecessor, Sir Winnie, to valiantly slog on in mighty defense of the Brexit, despite her ambassador's latest "exit" from the show.
Yes, but that doesn't mean that Poles who have been here for years have to go home. That will depend on reciprocal agreements with UK citizens living in other EU countries. Of the Poles I personally know, many are asking me about residency and citizenship in the light of Brexit. They have homes and jobs here, have raised families and do not want to go back to Poland. The ones I know who have returned are those who didn't settle well here to start with, or came for a specific length of time to save money.
As regards the OP's title though, I would think Brexit would to some degree put Poles off coming to the UK, as obviously no-one knows for sure what will happen. I certainly can't see Poles flocking to the UK in any sort of the numbers the OP is quoting.
Many will. I am an American who has lived in the UK with a great job, and in Poland. No question, the quality of life is SO SO SO MUCH better in Poland. The only thing the UK has is better wages, and things are changing.
Ziemowit What is the difference - You both speak foreign languages. You both set up enclaves in the UK and you both try to change the UK into your own little corner of the world. I see no difference to be frank.
Lyzko - Then maybe you need to come to my town. You rarely hear English spoken and every other shop is a Polski Sklep. I do feel as if I am living in another country. What I can never understand with any migrant groups who come to the UK is why you need to set up in the UK as if you are still in Poland or wherever? I see little if any evidence of assimilation. I just see groups of Polish people refusing to even try to speak English and the belief seems to be that you are "white" therefore it's ok....
Poland seems to abhor the idea of migrants and cannot tolerate any minority group living within its borders and especially dislikes attempts at changing your traditions, but not the other way around it seems.
I think there is a big difference between Poles that came after the war and those that came in the last decade or so. In approach to integration, work ethic and decency. You cant fault people looking to put food on the table, but the recent immigrants appear to want to milk the system rather than work for a living. No different maybe to some of the British. So maybe its not just the nationality but the system (and upbringing of course) that is to blame. Maybe under brexit we will see some changes that will make it harder to make a career out of being jobless.
It should be.....if you're unemployed for 3 months you are either getting a job, studying full time in an approved course or leaving. How many Poles are on welfare anyway, polish worker type reputation is pretty damn good. Someone get some numbers i am curious now.
Really no different here at home, HardBrexiter, as one who recalls our own little "Spanish Harlem" etc.
Admittedly though, England aka Britain is nonetheless FAR MORE HOMOGENEOUS in ethnicity, not to mention considerably smaller then the States or Canada. Therefore, outsiders DO tend to stand out to a much greater degree:-)
Outside of London, can' t imagine either that Polski Sklep or the like would tend to go over too well.
You have two years to create your Hard Brexit paradise so I don't know why you are wasting valuable time posting nonsense on here. the clock is ticking so put your back in to it and tell us when its finished so we can all admire your trade agreements with New Zealand.
It's true we are all over Brexit. In all the news bulletins yesterday i did not see a mention. Homeless people were on 10 times, brexit none. It seems to be way down the list in most papers outside uk. People have lost interest in it i reckon. Just get on with it already.
HardBrexiter : I understand you fears/anger . But dont be fooled polish people would be fully assimilated after one generation or 2 max. It has been the case in Germany, France even UK (polish who came after WW2 fighting against nazis became fully British).
But what about your muslims population ? After 2 generations they still make problems and refuse for example to handle pork food : telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/retailandconsumer/10532782/Muslim-staff-at-Marks-and-Spencer-can-refuse-to-sell-alcohol-and-pork.html
And you are telling me that polish people should tolerate these people at home in Poland ? Are you kidding ?
Do you have polish people preaching hate to non catholics in UK and preaching catholic laws ? No ? Because muslims do want shariah laws : dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2020382/You-entering-Sharia-law-Britain-As-Islamic-extremists-declare-Sharia-law-zone-London-suburb-worrying-social-moral-implications.html
You got to be kidding most of the uk has polski skleps , Uk had them since the sixtys from my memory. plenty in the midlands where I lived.
are you joking? in my city (fewer than 100k inhabitants) there are 4 shops like that... the biggest one ("nasza biedronka") is run by the kurds/turks employing Poles... they (i.e. owners, not the Poles) even learn basic Polish to speak to the customers- vast majority "Eastern Europeans" or, if local, trumps who came for a cheap lager
There only two other immigrant groups that brought their own shop to the UK, Indian and Pakistani, and now Polski........you hate Muslims but Polish immigration to the UK is very very similar to the other two groups, except you are white. Laughable isn't it.
In every town there is a Paki, Indian and Polish shop guaranteed.
If only it has been French patisserie, or an Italian deli, you can dream.
if you think that the only one better thing in UK (when compared to the PL) are wages.
Wandering streets of London I finally found out how it works. London is too big to refurbish. It is ongoing process. People don't have money for that so they develop social life instead. Android toy counts. This is our 5 minutes on this planet. We are temporary so don't bother mate. Lets play tetris when comuting to warehouse. There is no tragedy when someone lives in building from 1904. Some buildings have to colapse. New buildings are rising to the sky. Life goes on.
Tic tac toe...we have mc donals kfc pizza every suburb. Its like generic synthetic food has friggen taken over. There are fat people everywhere. A cultureless wasteland of lard dressed up as protein. I don't partake myself. A god damn paki shop would be better any day.
Does it need refurbishing? Clearly you haven't wandered the streets of Kensington and Chelsea, or Hampstead or Chiswick or Little Venice or St John's Wood or.................there are chunks of every large city that need refurbishing but London as a whole is in pretty good nick and the gentrification of places like Islington has been going on for decades now.
Crow, my dear! Things do not change so quickly as you would wish.
Soon enough, it would be much worse in Britain then in Poland.
Not without reason there are nearly one million Polish immigrants living in the UK at present. And it is very unlikely that "soon enough" they all come home and on top of that we will have one million native British immigrants in Poland soon.
How many Serbian immigrants live in Germany, for example? My wife and I know one Serbian family (living in the vicinity of Kraljevo now) whose daughter emmigrated to Germany and maried a Serbian man with whom they remain in Germany bringing up their children there. Do you really think they are ready to flock back to Serbia?
