Yes. Priests have been in the public eye for a few years and should know that.

Such mouth- knee-touching games look not only suspicious, but first of all, I already said it, may be quite humiliating for some students.

Fortunately, other priests are able to see there is a problem and call such behavior cretinism.


Actually, it is a Catholic school and the guy involved is its head teacher/director. It is a norm globally, that every year parents fight to get their kids to such schools and only the best and very good students are accepted and still feel extremely lucky. That was probably the reason why the head priest felt so unconstrained.

Traditionally, the most zajebiste initiation rites of passage are organised for first year students in Polish high schools. I especially liked this one in Sierpc:

Games, theatricals, dances, cabaret, costumes, topless. Crazy fooling around but no knee kissing. :P:):):)

I hope the recent scandal won`t put a stop to such traditions in the future......

Perhaps so in Lublin, but Catholic schools here suck in terms of educational achievement. Only one of them actually has anything approaching modern, decent teaching methods and facilities as well - the others are rather poor.


I'm about to propose banning them in my school, although we don't actually have any. I don't like them and don't believe that children have free will where they're concerned - so a formal ban on them should deal with that ;)

Really? Strange. Catholic schools in Krakow head all rankings... That is why every year they are sieged by students, let alone their parents.

I don't think there's a place for it - it just leads to bullying and coercion.

I've always thought that initiation rites are just an excuse to force people into doing humiliating things for some sort of sick pleasure. I remember Paul Newman quoting someone - "behind every practical joke is an element of malice".

Sorry, guys, but those amusing rites in Sierpc high school have been prepared by students themselves who just wanted to have fun.

it's a big world out there... it's important to teach kids when and how to say "no".

I doubt very much if first year students would come up with anything like that to 'welcome' themselves to high school, and if it's older students passing on traditions, then it's essentially institutionalised bullying and humiliation. To hear an adult involved in education describing them as simply 'amusing' and 'fun' is odd to say the least.;):):):):):)

You seem to miss one important thing. In today`s world, many young people like being in the center of attention, even if it is a rite of passage connected with silly games.

I don`t think anybody was forced to participate in that high school freshmen celebration. If you look at all the pictures on the site, you can see that most students are sitting along the walls while only the volunteers take part. They wanted to have their 5-minute fame in life, that`s all. I suppose that they soon became celebrities in their school, recognised in corridors and asked out to parties and dates.

And the school is fully aware of those desires and allows to fulfill them. Simple.

If there was coercion, bullying and humiliation, the scandal would have erupted in 2009 already. Half naked boys, with make-up, some dressed as sexy women, exposing bras, running all over the school, in front of teachers???? :):):):)

Local prosecutors don`t. They started official investigation into the case. Going to find out if kids weren`t abused sexually.

The order that runs the school announced giving up such initiation practices in the future.

It's not enough to give it up, they should fire him and make it clear that if it happens again in the school, then further heads will roll. The fact that he's still clinging to his job says how little honour he has.

On a related note, these practices are banned in my school - officially.

Hmm. Nothing in the way of brutality (though on occasion, I've wondered why they haven't beaten up someone), but there was a rather nasty incident last year of sneaky bullying - some kids were very subtly bullying one kid, who would then fight back openly and get into trouble for it. It took a while to figure out exactly what was going on, because it was done in such a clever way - it wasn't obvious at all.

The order also issued a statement that the head priest wasn`t involved in planning the scenario of the initiation ordeal.

That's a pathetic defence if there ever was one. For a start, there's a general concept of being responsible - it doesn't matter who planned it, the fact that he allowed it to happen AND participated in it says it all.

It's stuff like this that just ruins the RCC's name - instead of asking him to either quit or be fired, they try and pretend that everything is fine. If they fired him on the spot - it would be forgotten about by now.

Sadly, we're no longer allowed to make "blanket generalisations". But, by reading the above, perhaps some PFers will understand why some of us have done so previously.


If you really think that someone claiming to be a "good Catholic" will protect you from cheating, you are incredibly naive. I married a "good Polish Catholic", yet I was the victim of adultery. I'm the non-believer who has never cheated and never will. That blows all your Dark Ages theories of morality right out of the water.

Even good Polish Catholic partners have limitations. :):):)


In taht case, she thought it wouldn`t hurt you as you are a representative of the rotten West. Adultery is common there and nobody makes a big fuss about it. Come on.

One of the bad things about this forum is that I can still see a preview of replies from idiots on the ignore list.

Yet again, you have given us even more reason to suspect that you aren't really a teacher, otherwise you would understand that even in the so-called "rotten" West (the "West" which Poles seem to love to move to, ironically), many people DO make a fuss about adultery. And it's not because they are religious, it's because they understand the harm it can cause, to the victims and their families - religious or otherwise.

Like Polonius3, you fail to understand that non-believers in god or religion can also live decent, responsible, respectable and moral lives, and many religious people can live pretty dreadful lives.

Fortunately, the backward Poland of which you are a representative is gradually dying, and Poland will eventually be much better for it.

Oh, and when I was still married, I was still a believer.
