In Bialystok, the mayor has now openly said he would like to lobby for ONR (National Radical Camp)

We are now living in a new reality - and hardly anyone seems to realize it," the Antifascist coalition of November 11 has declared. Besides the nationalist riots which rocked Warsaw for the evening of November 11, a range of attacks took place that day to commemorate "National Independence Day." The Nationalists have announced a new militant strategy against democracy. ONR (Obóz Narodowo Radykalny, the National Radical Camp) and Młodzież Wszechpolska (All Polish Youth) MW, the groups responsible for organizing the march through Warsaw have now officially united and subsequently called for the overthrow of the Republic and the formation of paramilitary groups into a so-called "National Guard." The call sounds strikingly similar to Hitler's Brownshirts who patrolled German cities and broke opposition groups in the 1920's and 30's. Mussolini had similar backing with his "Blackshirts" who took over Rome marching street by street routing political enemies. This is the reality we are talking about, fascist militias coming to a town near you.

Poland's left-wing voices are being silenced:

a great comment can be found under the Guardian article.

You cannot blame a neolib/nationalist conspiracy for the decline and dumbing-down of a lefty magazine. The magazine messed up and/or failed to appeal to their audience and have themselves to blame.
And the rest of the article is pretty sketchy, too.
For example, the Guardian's Polish sister paper, Gazeta Wyborcza, is a gigantic left-wing institution, and arguably the most influential media outlet in Poland. Hardly a case of the left being silenced.
And Solidarity today is hardly a left-wing movement as understood in the UK, it is rather a national conservative or Catholic socialist movement, which wants to protect unionised jobs with the same self-interest as a neocon would want to protect crony tycoons' jobs. And by the way, it wants Poland to continue mining for very dirty brown coal, because it is putting heavy industry jobs ahead of green-left issues. No self-professed British lefty would take today's Solidarity at face value.

I would tend to agree with this.
I also agree that the whole ONR & MW thing is quite worrying. Scary in fact, but the first article is very unbalanced and not in any way objective journalism.

I cannot see the far-right gaining any more power in Poland than in any other central European country. They will remain on the fringes and when it comes to elections, the silent majority will not vote for them...............I hope.

Agreed. Nothing has happened to make them more popular than they have been and the more these jerks march around and throw cobblestones at the police, the more people they will alienate the average voter. Look how quickly the PiSuarzy were thrown out of office.

Parallels with Weimar Germany and d'Annunzio's Italy are interesting but faulty. There is one big difference now - when the fascists start their silliness, it's on the lunchtime news and everyone sees them for what they are by teatime.

I really hope that is true, but these thugs serve the purpose or repressing and intimidating from below; the Neo-liberals that swept into power in 1989, as part of their Friedman agenda, remove any discussion on the economic conditions of the majority, from above. And, the church do their usual job of preventing critical thinking and maintaining division; just like they did prior to WW2 emphasizing that Polish Jews were not Polish. There is a major problem in Poland I feel, among a large section of the populace in relation to the realities of the modern world and general interaction with the outer world(resentment towards the mere mention of multiculturalism). At the moment things are being held together by EU grants, mass emigration, mass privatization, billions being sent home from millions of Poles abroad. The worry is, is that if their is further collapse in the EU, the Polish house of cards may collapse and the thugs and the their populace rats may become more significant. I think were Poland differs from other countries is that there is still a strong church backed(Radio Maria ONR) ignorance driving the old right wing as opposed to the modern Berlusconi right wing that keeps the people numbed with trash TV/ púrn.

Poland's leftwing voices are being silenced

get real!
Whats left-wing now? Gays "rights", green energy, some fringe BS, abortion whenever one wants, sexual education for six years old, religion to museum, selected minorities are always right and others BS one can agree with or not!

In practice it means censorship, propaganda and growing bureaucracy and activist paid for from taxpayers monies to preach some more instead of priests. Telling people how to live!

Bureaucracy/gov of left-wing kind in exchange for support is giving a license to banks and corporations for exploitation of working class and society at large.

Union is not about defending workers but about equality whatever that means. How lame is that?

This is the reality we are talking about, fascist militias coming to a town near you.

Instead of getting hysterical and silly you have a choice of going home and asking for Garda protection!lol!

We dont need to debate your fascist views of most the utter BS you said, everybody knows where you stand.
But WTF is wrong with green energy and unions?
Care to elaborate or do you simply oppose anything rational?

Thanks for enlightening me. :D
Let me help you along: So you think that burning fossil fuels or running potentially life threatening reactors is better than harvesting energy from wind, water and the sun, which is free, abundant and risk free?

Maybe he thinks green tax is an international collection for the New World Order, or international communism; Probably just your typical paranoid John Birch/ Radio Maria/ teabagger.

"Fascism" was a response to communism. Germany and Italy saw the blood thirsty commie scum coming and were being proactive.

Would be awesome if a Golden Dawn-like party emerges in Poland and heck across all of Europe. Time for action is now before Europe terms into an Islamic continent.

that makes communism good.

Um no it doesnt.

To put it very mildly :)))

Let me help you along: So you think that burning fossil fuels or running potentially life threatening reactors is better than harvesting energy from wind, water and the sun, which is free, abundant and risk free?

Could you please explain why, If this energy is so free, it is not competitive without huge subsidies ? I hope to hear from you soon !

The traditional forms of energy have been heavily subsidized for decades. What do you think the money came from to build the atomic reactors or coal mining etc.?

Renewable energy is in its fledgling stages and needs to be kickstarted, but once the infrastructure is there, we will have unlimited energy for a lot less than it costs now.

Anyway the gas and fuel we burn comes from Russia and Arabia. Dont you guys hate those guys?

Exactly. Even large scale oil extraction doesn't happen without huge state involvement. Green energy, which anyone with space for a solar panel or a small windmill can take part in needs help to get it off the ground in the face of partisan opposition.

Look at Greece atm

Greece, black alert

In the context of shameful European indifference, Greece is getting dangerously close to a social and racial explosion.

Racist, anti-Semitic and revisionist declarations have become increasingly frequent, especially from high-ranking political leaders. The president of the Parliamentary Committee for Human Rights recently compared immigrants to cockroaches, amid general indifference. The Golden Dawn's spokesman was able to quote the famous anti-Semitic hoax, "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion," in Parliament and receive no condemning reactions for it.

So do you Greeks now regret joining the EU?

Would Greece still have 50% youth unemployment if it wasn't committed to free trade with the other EU nations?
