What's a premarital medical check up in Poland?

I'm not sure where to put this one but I'm putting it in relationships and marriage since, it's a marriage related thing :)

What is a premarital medical check up? And is it possible to be done in Poland? How long does it take? Has anyone ever done it?

I was told by some friends that it's something good, at least to know what to expect to be passed down to your kids and such.

I'm asking because I'm interested to know how this is viewed in Poland.

I never heard of a single couple taking such check ups.

What do you think of it?

If the results of the check-up were bad, would you change your mind about marrying or go ahead?

I wouldn't bother.

Exactly.

Someone might have the test and just end up worrying.

Go ahead. But I think it's fair for us to know what to expect? What if I can't have children? I rather she knows now and decide than find out after a few years and then regret.

Adopt.

In any case, you might be fertile now but have some sort of tragedy later - life is a lottery so you may as well get on with things.

True it could happen.
I don't know, I just feel she's entitled to know early on if possible.
And honestly I wanted to learn about adoption just in case :)

I understand that and it's reasonable but...love is not reasonable. And life can always suprise you. Let's say she decides that kids are more important- don't you think she might regret that decission as well in the future?

If it happens later, it happens. She can still make her decision. But isn't it more responsible to do this before marriage? What if I had some STD and not know of it? (like bad needle or blood transfusion or something)

I'm not saying you shouldn't do it- it's all up to you and your fiance. I wouldn't bother but if it's something you really want to do- go ahead.

I had a friend that took test for sex transmitted diseases even though he wasn't involved in risky behaviour but that was because his gf wanted him to do it (she was a virgin- he wasn't)

@abu3issa: The thing your talking about is called "genetic counseling". Check out the Wikipedia article on the topic. Pre-marital blood testing is something entirely different and unrelated.

It's wise to do if there is a history of serious inborn disorders in your or your spouses family. Sickle-cell anemia or cycstic fibrosis, for example. You meet with a specialist, who decides which tests might be necessary. Tests take no more than a week to perform, and then you meet with a specialist who discusses the results with you.

It's also a good idea for both partners to get tested for STI's, including HIV and HBV, and get appropriate treatment before a pregnancy occurs. Any physician can arrange the testing for you.
