Hey everyone, just joined here so be easy on me!!
Basically, I am a Romanian girl with a Polish guy and I was wondering what the general opinion towards Romanians are?
My boyfriend told me that most Poles see Romanians just as "gypsies" and prostitutes...(not the view of the educated)
And on one occasion when Lukasz went to a party, some stupid guy (polish) who didnt even know either of us started a fight, solely based on the fact that my boyfriend was with a Romanian girl and they ended up in a fist fight (Lukasz winning!)

So, tell me, what are YOUR opinions on us??

There is a lot more to it then what nationalities you are. When two people meet at university, for example, it would be viewed differently then if one is trying to figure out how to make it in a foreign country because it's better than her own. I have a Rumunian friend, a genius, who studied in Poland on math scholarship. I can't imagine anyone ever thinking of her as a prostitute (gypsy, she is).

In short, you're not giving enough information to form an opinion. In my opinion. ;)

From what I can see there is this unhealthy tendency to look down upon other nationalities, particularly those hailing from countries worse off than Poland. I'd wager it is simply an expression of some sort of Polish inferiority complex, as Poles often are not that hip either in the eyes of others, hence their need to find someone 'lower' to pick on to feel better about themselves. By no means it's a prevailing attitude though it is noticeable. The younger and better educated Poles are probably to a large extent free of that.

Didn't you say you were Latin?

I guess Europe has a different definition of Latin because here in America we refer to Latin people as those who originate from Latin America.

it's pretty natural, flagless. The natives have the home advantage, so they're nice to those foreigners that they think will be good for them, and wish that all the others disappear. It's got nothing to do with particular nationalities. It's a herd thing, probably. ;)

yes, we are latin lol

Yea Em in Europe Latin is you speak a Latin language not ur Latino like here in US. And Elena don't worry about ignorant ppl they are in every country. I have two friends both named Monica lol who are from Romania and they don't look like Gypsies. The opinion exists because right after communism fell Gypsies from Romania came to Poland and were begging on the streets, I remember this from when i was a kid. And since all people saw from Romania was gypsies coming over they though Romanians look the same. But we know that's not true, Romanians look diverse. Like these..

Just keep looking at your sentence for a bit, see what I mean. But I know where you're coming from on this one. When someone mentions a Latin girl (Latina) no way in hell he means Romanian, that's just Eastern European.

But even in Europe defefintion of Latin can be confusing, historically Latin Europe means countries under the sway of Roman Catholic Church and here Poland would be Latin unlike Othodox Romania. If by Latin you mean countries speaking Romance languges then Romania is just that.

In general the Latin/Roman languages are from Europe. From the original Latin language (probably extinct now).

When speaking of South and Central people you call them Latinos or Latinas.

Spanish people are Spaniards

And people who speak Spanish (and maybe Porteguese) are Hispanics.

My boyfriend told me that most Poles see Romanians just as "gypsies" and prostitutes...

You might know this already but just in case you don't, this is for two reasons:

- In the early 90's there was a big influx of gypsies from Romania who lived in parks, begged in the streets, smelled bad and who generally alienated the Polish public.

- The PC requirement to not use the word gypsy (Cygan in Polish) any more and replace it with 'Rrom' (or Roma) was too similar to Romanian for many people to keep separate. Most people at some level know that most Romanians are not gypsies but since most of their contact with people from Romania has been with the gypsy minority (who are not exactly goodwill ambassadors) that knowledge breaks down.

I don't know where the prostitute thing somes in (besides prostitution being another occasional sideline for gypsies). There used to be tirówki (roadside prostitutes) from the Balkans but I thought they were mostly Bulgarian or ex-Soviet. Maybe there were some Romanians too....

I'd advise not worrying about it (cause you can't change it) and concentrate on making a good impression on the Poles you meet one person at a time.

The funny thing is that Poland and Romania have a lot in common. The times I've been in Romania and people mention something they think only applies to Romania my first reaction is usually 'Oh, just like Poland!'.

PC requirement

Gypsy is Roma, like gay is homosexual, and I am familiar with psychological effect of two steps policies, to dilute the essence, yet people tend to adopt the new designators but associate similar meanings after a while.

Elena, I am not Polish and Serbs in general like Romanians. Vlad Tepes :)) We are the only two neighboring nations that never had conflict, which is for Balkans bordering surreal.

Romanians have the most positive stereotype about Serbs as well in the area, with Greeks, I am familiar with research on that topic. OK Greeks are our allies for eternity and we share some blood and love for blood ;)

In one period, immediately after Ceausescu was overthrown which was covered and helped by Belgrade TV and its crew who was informing the rest of the world, Romania suffered a lot, and there was a short period when poverty and the possible ways to cope were only few, so I think that labeling of Romanians as a thieves, prostitutes occurred then. In that period I also heard in one part of Vojvodina (north Serbia) that they called Romanians - Banat gypsies. Whaaaaat? Thefts were really skyrocketing after 1990, but it was a momentum. Nothing else.

Romanians are known as good people :)

One of my mom's friends boyfriends is a guy who was until recently a leading ballet dancer of our National theater, he is Romanian who moved from Romania to Belgrade after Ceausescu's free fall more than 2 decades ago, because of love for the 20 years older woman (mom's friend), he is rarely talented, bright and funny man. Simply lovable.

He smokes two packs a day, and dances 4 h. not destroyable. I like him a lot. His stories about his early life in Bucharest are material for stand up comedy.

My favorite Romanian working...

Poles see Romanians just as "gypsies"

Coloquially many people call Roma people "Romanians" as gypsy from that country massively came to Poland in the 90s to earn money as beggers etc.

Roma people don't have a good reputation here. On the other hand Romanian non-gipsies are almost unknown. If you say clearly that you're not a Roma girl then you will avoid negative associations. If you are a Roma girl then I'm sure when people get know you closer they will change their attitude. I will cross my fingers for you :)

I don't know where the prostitute thing

I agree I've never heard about it either!

From what I can see there is this unhealthy tendency

From what you see? From where exactly? Tailand or Denmark?

The younger and better educated Poles are probably to a large extent free of that.

I wouldn't be so sure about that.
Roma people have a bad reputation of being a clever thiefs, fortune tellers (if someone believe in those things) and beggers using children and women to make quite huge money out of it. It's not out of thin air. It's just a fact that many Roma people did it. I believe there are also many decent, hard-working and law-abiding people among Roma population too. There is a notable Polish singer who is a half Roma - Edyta Górniak.

There is also a romantic stereotype of gipsy life - free, adventurous, colourful. Poles like gipsy music and there is many positve reference to Gipsies and their lifestyle in old pop songs. Unfortunately in recent years the negative stereotype prevailed.

I guess that insisting on political correct term Roma for Gypsies, contributed by causing confusion on semantic level. Homonyms almost. "Romania is the land of Roma people?" a probable thought of less informed.

Political correctness Romanians pay for. Everything comes with the price, and interestingly the price for the costs somebody else made are payed by those who don't have anything to with it. Generous move ;)

Been to Poland, you know. Rarely heard any Pole say anything nice about other nationality, they'd usually concentrate on negatives(imaginary or not) and if the country in question happened to be poorer than Poland then they'd have a field day... but those were the late 90's so I surmise that attitudes might have changed since, given more openess, increased affluence and more exposure to other cultures through travels and such.

Isn't it like that in every single country? Probably if you sincerely asked Danes what they think about Poles and Poland their perception would be the same - an attitude full of a patronizing and disregarding vein. "Poland? Oh, it's that poor post-communistic immigrant country full of alcoholics" - I believe that's the perception. If you ask Russians what they think of let's say Azerbaijan they probably would also look down on them. Hey, we're just humans and none of us is saint, so don't pretend you're anything better.

Rarely heard any Pole say anything nice about other nationality

They rarely say nice things about themselves too.

hey'd usually concentrate on negatives

Don't you know that nagging is our national sport? You can accuse Poles of being arrant malcontents but not that they do that deliberately! :)

given more openess, increased affluence and more exposure to other cultures

What exposure of other cultures? Most Poles don't experience other culture in Poland and rarely travels. Besides that experience of other cultures doesn't change the attitude. It's a simplification. It's also not about education, many educated people are prejudiced some way against other nations. I'm against racism and prejudice but one must see what's the real reason behind it, not resort to simplifications. It's convenient to say that only uneducated people are racist or prejudiced because it helps to cut off from such kind of people by downplaying them, pushing into margins, but in sad reality they are among us, not in the margin...

However I don't say that Poles are more prejudiced toward others, it's just in Poland political correctness doesn't exist in such broad way like in other countries so Poles feel more bold to say what they think. I believe that many people in so called Western countries are also prejudiced against other nations but they hide their real feeling because they afraid of being ostracised, so that they show their prejudice in more subtle forms or not openly.

As for Romanians I strongly believe that Poles in general are not prejudiced against them, simply because it's a country which is unknown for most of them. They are just prejudiced against Romas and sometimes take Romanians for Romas.

"Poland? Oh, it's that poor post-communistic immigrant country full of alcoholics

true, minus the alcoholic part (that'd be Russians) besides when it comes to the beer consumption and the ensuing drunkeness especially among the young, it's hard to beat Danes... I think according to Swedes and Norwegians we are the alcoholics... actually Xmas season in Denmark starts with the realese of special, extra strong brew Julebryg (first friday of November) it's all about beer really

they do it more than ever before... besides over one million Poles in UK...

. Besides that experience of other cultures doesn't change the attitude

Doesn't it..? I would have thought it would unless that 'exposed' someone is superbly blinkered

it's just in Poland political correctness doesn't exist in such broad way like in other countries

Political corectness in Denmark lol, Muhamed cartoons anyone, not mention tons of satire that would be completely unthinkable in US, UK and France...

and many of them being racist towards Pakistanians... and Polish women who date them. Don't you read this forum? ;)

Doesn't it..? I would have thought it would unless that 'exposed' someone is superbly blinkered

I heard many stories when a person had gone to the USA and returned as a racist (towards Afroamericans). Probably it's because immigrants live in the worst neighborhoods where ethnic miniorities rather don't show the better side of them. Second thought is that if someone is already prejudiced he wants to see only that half of the truth which proves he is right in being prejudiced. I doubt if those recent PF Poles-taking-benefits-bashers would change their mind if they experienced Polish culture...
