Warsaw has potential to be a beautiful city, but its going to take at least 15-20 years time. It has its beautiful parts, like the old town and many parts of downtown, and some nice parks etc. But it has a lot of ugly parts (Praga, Ursynow come to mind). The problem with Warsaw is that you have some beautiful architecture, and right beside it, you have those disgusting, piece of crap bloki mieszkalny right beside it, and it spoils the beauty. Personally speaking, if they demolished those cramped communist era apartment blocks and other buildings, it could look beautiful. Thats what they are doing in former east germany. Every year, there are less and less commie blocks. Poland should start doing the same in 25-30 years time.
Worlds most liveable cities (Krakow or Warsaw don't even hit the radar screens)
for me , the most liveable city is Warsaw , have you got any doubts ? Nice and friendly people , clean steets and buildings
I can't imagine that Warsaw is so different than the rather large city I lived in in Poland, but have you been sniffing model airplane glue?!?!?
It didn't bother me so much when I was single, but taking my little kids for a walk in the city drove me nuts with the vast amounts of feces and urine (not sure if it was human or dog) as well as broken glass everywhere. I was just in Poland on holiday and was taking a morning stroll at 6:00 when I saw a huge pile of dog sh*t right in front of the door to Costa Coffee. That about sums it up.
It's true that some Polish people are really nice, but I just can't get past that coldness and unwillingness to help. I've definitely seen improvements in this area, but it's got a ways to go.
They are not comparable, Vienna was not destroyed during the war like Warsaw was.
These lists don't care if a city was destroyed or not. Frankfurt was completely destroyed too, but is #7 on the Mercer list.

LMAO, Guess who has never seen The Third Man........

You present such an ignorant view Palivec
Try to compare the level of destruction of both cities to have a balanced opinion .
Bombing of Frankfurt am Main by the Allies of World War II killed about 5,500 residents and destroyed the largest specify medieval city center in Germany.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombing_of_Frankfurt_am_Main_in_World_War_II
Now the facts about Warsaw :In December 1939 the first mass shootings of civilians takes place in the Kampinos Forest near Warsaw where by 1943 thousands would be killed. In 1940 round-ups (lapanki) of civilians on streets and in homes became the norm. Those who did not manage to escape were sent to death camps at Auschwitz and Majdanek or forced into slave labour in Germany After the remaining population had been expelled, the Germans begun the destruction of the remnants of the city. Special groups of German engineers were dispatched throughout the city in order to burn and demolish the remaining buildings. According to German plans, after the war Warsaw was to be turned into nothing more but a military transit station. The destruction of the city was so severe that in order to rebuild much of Warsaw a detailed landscape of the city, painted by the Italian artists Marcello Bacciarelli and Bernardo Bellotto, which had been commissioned by the government before the Partitions of Poland had to be used as a model to recreate most of the buildings.

Never experienced this, some tourist a pretty rude!
For me, there isn't really much to argue about here. Even if Polish cities were paradise on earth, you'll never have the right climate. Just check the monthly temperature averages:

Perhaps you would care to tell us where Władysław Szpilman was living at the end of 1944 if not Warsaw? He claims that he was living in Warsaw then: why are you calling him a liar? And what about Stefan Chaskielewicz? Why are you also calling him a liar? Dawid Fogelman? To you he's also a liar. And Jozef Dudzinski, just another liar to you. Henryk Beck? Roman Fiszer? Both liars to you. Alina Winawerowa: she's a liar too, is she? Witold £azowski? Jan Fetinger? Jan Gadaliński? Fania and Sewek Glazer? Basia and Mietek Chwat? Stefan Ślusarczyk? Franciszek Głowacki? Chaim Goldstein? Gabriel Cybulski? Dawid and Luba Landau? All of them are just liars to you.
All of those people said that they were living in Warsaw at the end of 1944 but you just have to call them liars. You are pathetic Moania.

ever saw the movie 'The Pianist'? - what the film shows is no exaggeration - Szpilman was effectively hiding in the ruins - the capitulation of the Warsaw Uprising meant also the forceful removal of the population of the city (it was also done during the Uprising by the Germans) - all who remained in the city could have been killed on spot by the German occupying forces for not obeying strict orders to empty the city - I guess only the hiding Jews took the chances (and you must know that a lot of Jews were hiding out in th 'gentile' part of Warsaw during the occupation until the Warsaw Uprising (I have seen an estimate of 30 000 people) - some of these people survived the Uprising and it's massive destruction and loss of life and then managed to survive hiding out in the ruins of the city untill the liberation by Soviet forces
I know that, you know that; Moania, however, lies about that.

Melbourne is quite nice, but not as nice as Sydney. They are too artyfarty and always jealous of Sydney in everything. If you wanna get Warsaw and Krakow included in the ranking, write to them! 100 emails should be enough to make them consider Polish cities in their ranking.

You are so pathetic , Harry .
The population of Warsaw was extinct ( those who lived in rubbles couldn`t be even counted as there were so few of them ). They were lucky though, that Germans didn`t kill them as they didn`t take civilians alive , who were shot at once. Officially there were no people in Warsaw .Those survivers who survived the Warsaw uprising died in death camps or labour camps .
Then the systematic destruction of the city started . One building after another was burned down with flamethrowers or dynamite ( most prominent palaces and churches were blown away with dynamite as they were built stronger than regular buildings ) .
After the war, people, but not all Warsawians started to came back . Most of whom were killed and mudrered . My family for example haven`t been coming back for 40 years. Some of them have even left Poland as they were affraid of commie government , because of their Home Army ( AK ) participation.
Who wants to hear your distorted facts , anyway - liar Harry ? Why did you change your nickname , were you so frustrated by your criticism for your previous treatement ?

Really Moania? So pathetic that I lie about such details as the fact that people were living in Warsaw at the end of 1944? Oh, no, sorry: you're the one who decided to lie about that.

Which village is your family from? And why do you claim that they ever lived in Warsaw: they are clearly all peasants from the provinces.

Actually, I think I might well go back to using my legal name rather than this nickname: I'm sure you remember why.
wait a sec, Praga was not, for the most part, destroyed during the war- there are still loads of beautiful streets with pre war architecture. Saying that the population was 0 after the war is not true at all and is greatly exaggerated. There are also areas in Filtry, Mokotow, Zoliborz and even centrum that have not been leveled. After the war they were occupied by residents of Warsaw- probably not the original owners but from Warsaw just the same. 30,000 people left after the war is probably more or less accurate- zero is not.
