It is supposed to be but no one really takes these things seriously anymore.

As I said - Polack is a term used towards racist Polish Americans, rather than Polish Americans or Poles.

Oh, so it's OK to use the term Paki towards racist Pakistanis, and kyke towards racist Jews?
And, of course, it is perfectly acceptable to use the term nigger when talking about
a racist Afro-American?

*Oh, that feckin nigger I met the other day - he was really a racist pig*

:)

Seems fair, don't you think?

Of course, there are no shops called "Nigger Johnny's", unlike Pollack Johnny's.

(in all fairness : the admin made it clear a while ago that racist terms were fine, as long as they're on topic)

I'm not sure. Using racial slurs and, at the same time, protesting against them is kind of like
raping a child as a protest against paedophilia. But if you think that's OK, then, by all means,
carry on.

Of course, that assumes that Polack is a racial slur.

Racist?

(in all fairness : this forum would be a far better place without all the racism flying around)

Of course, that assumes that Polack is a racial slur.

If you assume that "Jew" is a racial slur...

It's a derogatory insult towards them.

Same way that Jew is used as an insult towards Jewish people.

...then you have to admit that the term "Polack" is used by racists in the same derogatory
way as an insult towards Polish people (not to mention the phrase "dumb Polacks" that you
used.)

it is. I'd be offended if someone used that word in my companionship. Why do you still argue with that?

Thing is, I wouldn't dream of using it towards a Polish person. It's not particularly offensive anyway (everyone I asked, bar one person who lived in America was like "huh? why are you calling me a male Polish person?") for Poles - for me, it's solely an insult towards dumb racist Americans who use their "Polishness" as an excuse to act better than everyone else. Of course, their Polishness is pretty vague anyway - and for many of them, they could very well be Ukrainian/etc anyway.

Of course, I guess in the United States, Polack is used towards all Poles.

But Torq - moving away from my personal usage, do you know about any offensive nicknames used for Poles by other Europeans? Polack is unknown for us from the UK.

it is. I'd be offended if someone used that word in my companionship. Why do you still argue with that?

Would you be offended if it was aimed towards an American who was using his "Polishness" to justify his racist, village idiot behaviour that was reflecting badly on anyone who was actually Polish?

there are many other words you can call him. You don't need to use ethnic slurs for that.

Sure, but it certainly makes them react ;)

Well, back in highschool during a trip to Flensburg, I once decreased the number of teeth
in a certain German's mouth, for calling me a "Polacke". I'm not sure if he meant it in
a derogatory way or not (he was trying to speak, but found it hard to pronounce words
properly, and I didn't know any German back then anyway) but I certainly took it as
an insult.

Today, in the English-speaking world, the word "Polack" is sometimes considered an ethnic slur:
Slang: Disparaging and Offensive (Random House Unabridged Dictionary)
Offensive Slang Used as a disparaging term for a person of Polish birth or descent (The American Heritage Dictionary)

I personally don’t know of any true blooded racist dumb fvuck northerner WASP Yank or his even more dumbed down cousin, your typical redneck that considers himself Polish, do you? And those are your typical racist Americans scum. Once they put on their mothers used and unwashed linen on, cut out few holes and put on those pointy hats that went out of fashion sometimes in the dark ages in Europe that’s when they feel all brave and when sufficient number of them gets together that’s when they start showing their true colors.

I'd say in the US, perhaps (though - if Pollock Johnny's exists, it can't be that bad. I can't imagine "Nigger Adam's" or "Kyke David's"). Certainly not in the UK.

then you are trolling.

Aren't we all?

Pollock

doesn't pollock mean fish?
delphiandomine  86 | 17823

Yeah :D

But the Americans use Polack, Pollock, Polak and variants of that interchangably as an insult.

(there's a point to be made about dumb Americans in there, I guess)

ioana_57: I don't know about Lah
Isn't Lah the Ruthenian word for a member of the Szlachta? In Sienkiewicz's Trilogy the Tartars and Turks refer to Poland as "Lahistan".

Yes its true we call polish people Lech (Leh),Ottoman time we called Lehistan but now we call poland we call polish people Lech(Leh) Lehler.

So no,it's not insulting.

The first time I heard that word was a long time ago from a schoolfriend whose father had served with Poles in WWII. I've never heard it used offensively in real life, however some posters on here (generally Americans) seem to get very offended by it. Perhaps it's about the way the word is used over there.
