did/does Polish TV show any British Sitcoms?

and if so were they popular over there, does the humour translate?
i'm thinking of Last of the summer wine (the early series were best), Rising Damp, Steptoe & Son, Father Ted, Red Dwarf, Porridge, Open all hours, Dads Army, Black Books, Blackadder?

excluding Mr Bean, which i know gets screened everywhere

I thought he meant on the main channels that are free to air, not cable or subscription.

i was amazed to find that was shown in Belgium, i can't get my head round how that would work in another language!

aaah keeping up appearances, written by the Brilliant Roy Clarke, i guess theres snobs everywhere so that would travel well.
i imagine his more Yorkshire- based stuff like Last of the summer wine or Open all hours may not translate as well.

They don't show anything modern, just all that MOR crap like My Family/ 'Allo Allo

Would love to see some brit stand-up comedy on tele, really miss that about living here, no stand-up at all, just incredibly tame caberet, full of mother-in-law jokes and guys falling over.

They used to show Benny Hill. It is still my all time favorite British comedy

This evening my favorite British comedy is 'only fools and horses'.

I don't know if the humour, cockney rhyme would translate well, though the circumstances would, I know a few Del-Boys in Krakow.

It is very well received and the mentality is the same.

I'll file that under Irish/Anglo but thank goodness British TV saw the genius, while RTE look like fools.

I am certainly not the same man after watching it. I'll never look at a lingerie department ever again without ******* myself laughing;)

Well I don't see Establishment in Poland as particularly religious.

Well, all in all Benny Hill could be your grandma. I have fond memories of that series from my childhood (as well as Allo allo, which I still love to watch)

Not really a sitcom but also a humour show: "Little Britain".
Monty Pythons were popular too.

Yeah but who watches BBC Entertainment? they just seem to show third rate British comedies and 'come dine with me' which as a program I just can't get my head around.

Black adder is now my favorite British comedy, this will change as the night draws in but hear, I'm like the weather.

Course I watched it, it was about a dirty old man who chased after bimbos in sexy underwear. It was on for 30mins every saturday evening.

Not funny in any way.

Benny Hill and Mr Been-I never understood what's so funny.

I didn't find most of BH that funny either, although I know lots of people that did.

For anyone wondering, that was the episode where the main characters (priests) accidentally entered a dept store's ladies underwear section which was so huge that they couldn't find their way out of it, as if it were a jungle or forest.

TVP 1 or 2 showed all the episodes of Ab Fab and the ill-fated Wizja Jeden was showing the League of Gentlemen dubbed into Polish (with more than one voice, thank God) under the title 'Pcin Dolny'.

It surprises me that Dr Who appears totally unknown in Poland. Its well made (now) with intelligent story lines and my partners kids love it. Saturday evening isn't the same without it. The kids end up in a Mexican standoff when trying to discuss it with their cousins on Skype.

It's a pity it hasn't caught on. I think its rather good and deals with moral issues very well.

It surprises me so many people like "Keeping up appearances" in Poland. It portrays a society that has all but disappeared now. I'd say in the seventies, there was one or two Hyacinths on every road. It's the domain of footballers wives now.

The reason for that may be that Poland still has her Hyacinths on every road. We are behind England in almost everything. Notice that our own Guy Fawkes appeared more than 400 years after the original one. If things don't speed up significantly, we'll have to wait until 2419 for our Hyacinths to disappear. But things risk not to speed up since David Cameron wants to cut down on funds which are aimed to help Poland speed things up.

I have very strong opinions on this because currently my partner, her children and I are badly affected by crappy Polish Law. I think they should be spending money on changing laws that they have promised to, to make the country more compatible with its European friends.

Building roads only reduces the time to travel. It doesn't make it a better place. Society is rooted in law. If law is bad then ....
